Seriously though? With kulkarni, Sameer Dighe, SS Das and Bahatule? I really don't think this comes close to the best Indian team. In my opinion the team from 2005/06-2008/09 was the best ever. Sehwag, Gambhir, the Fab 4 in the middle order, Dhoni, Zaheer, Bhajji - the best of the best.

@@redhash1998 yep the team was ordinary but the captin was great .this was the best australian team in the Austrian cricket history you need some thing extra to beat this Australian team and with those young debutants most of them didn't even played or able to cement their place but still with that limited resources saurav manage to pullout an outstanding series victory. Now a days we are arguably the best team in the world with everything covered still lost the semis in both 15s and 19s. Still not able to achieve what this 2001 australian team achieved.

The rise of Ganguly as a captain, Dravid as a commendable batsman and Gilchrist as a quality wicket keeper in challenging circumstances.
Hayden, Harbhajan and VVS were the stand out performers of this series... They went on to rule the cricketing world for the first decade of the new millennium..
In the hindsight this high pressure series also brought the curtains for alteast 3 big names.. Slater, Mark Waugh & Venkat Raju. Their international career came to an end within a year or so..
I don't think Raju ever played a test match again.
Mark lost his form and was lost in woods, after the series against NZ and SA he was never considered again, neither for one dayers nor for test matches. He never announced his retirement in a manner modern cricketers did but those 8500 runs were pure treat to the eyes.
Slater brought embarrassment to himself and his team by claiming a catch that was never there. That angry outburst against Dravid did him..
The series was played in perfect competitive spirit, each player bringing his best on to the table, an acknowledgment to two of the biggest ambassadors of the game in whose name the prizes trophy was named - Alan Border and Sunil Gavaskar.

This Captain, this team, they started it all. From making steve waugh wait at the tosses to show him who is the boss to letting his boys play their natural game to sacrificing his own batting for the team that man Ganguly surely deserves a lot more praise than any other Indian captain. He was at the helm after a disastrous event, he built the team from scratch. He instilled faith in them, he instilled faith that this team can win anywhere. He did it, His boys did it for him and their Colours. Legends all of them, the era where the dominance started. Kudos to these gentlemen.

Saurav won matches in Aus, Eng, WI and Pak. He drew series in Eng and Aus. In those days, strength of Aussie team was out of the world. Every person in that Aussie team was a matchwinner. Even drawing against them was big. Today's Aus team would have lost by an innings if they played against the 2000-2005 Aus team. Saurav encouraged the first crop of Indian quicks including Zaheer, Nehra, Agarkar etc. Before Saurav era, fast bowling was discouraged in India. Nowadays there is MRF foundation, special training for fast bowlers etc. Kohli deserves credit for reversing the trend under Dhoni. Dhoni almost reversed the good work done by Ganguly to develop fast bowling culture in India. Virat revived it.

When he was dropped in 2005, it wasn't entirely illogical because I remember he was in woeful form for more than a year. And by woeful, I mean really woeful--like avg
Samir Dighe should also be remembered for his contribution with bat when the team was in deep trouble, he did hit couple of boundaries to help achieve the target.
Dighe's appeals were also very loud and were a great support for TEAM INDIA

The heroes of this match are definitely sachin for his century and harbhajan for his 15 wickets. Hayden's double is also appreciated...but few people talk about Junior Waugh. True great memories. The matriculation exam was going on for me and my dad had packed the television for good. The entire series I listened to relayed through Radio. Really one of the greatest memories I can think of. Lived and watched through the eyes of the radio commentators and was really a wonderful experience. And got through the exams in flying colours too. Cherry on the cake🙂

In this series 3 cricketers who were average performers turned into great players .All of them started in 90s but had pretty ordinary careers until this series. They all had superb performances throughout this series and had brilliant careers afterwards. They were mathew hayden , vvs laxman and harbhajan singh .

Even when the whole stadium was celebrating, they were looking at scorer to ensure that they had won the match and maintained calm. Only when they were certain, they started celebrating. A certain lesson for todays' cricketers who start celebrating as early as when 2 runs are needed in 3 balls😉.

I feel sorry for current generation. I missed golden days of cricket when bilateral series were hyped and lived upto expectations.
That series win was priceless & can only be compared with only world cup title wins of INDIA in 1983 & 2011. Because before this series AUSTRALIA won 16 tests in a row (not even a single draw match during these ) . All teams started to believe that no team can even imagine to beat these mighty Aussies team😢. But Dada's(saurav) unique leadership and very very skillfull legends like VVS,DRAVID,SACHIN and more importantly totally mesterious masterpiece offspin attack by Bhajji turned in to stop mighty winning run of AUSSIES.
This series victory started to change defensive mindset of INDIAN cricketers in all forms of cricket. India were a pretty weak team back then. Till then, Batting used to be Tendulkar, and Bowling, basically none. We had poorest of bowlers. This series actually changed the old tradition, as others in the Batting lineup stood up as well. Though our bowling was always the weak link, and a major reason of so many matches that India has lost even when there were Sachin and Dravid in the team.
Dada is one of the greatest Captains ever, the the greatest of all Indian ones that have ever been. What we see today in Indian Cricket is Dada's Legacy.
Agree! The bowling was always inconsistent even after Harbhajan and Zaheer came but the batting after 2000 became a solid unit. Dravid and Laxman were coming into their own and with Sehwag they had a formidable top 5!
India always had brilliant spin attack, the weak link was the pace bowling...... Otherwise the results in many matches played in SENA countries would have been different.
Kohli is the greatest Indian test captain. Before him we used to depend on spinners. Kohli bring the fast bowling culture in India. Results are there to be seen, 2 series wins down under and also never lost a test series in India.

They lost that remarkable test series in India but continued to dominate the world cricket at least for next 5-10 years. At that time, all 11 Aussi players were the best in their respective roles. Forget about any tournament, even defeating them in a match was a big achievement.
Ironically Aus remained no1 test team for almost next 5 years straight with only one series lose, 2005 Ashes. :D

Yes the craze of test matches could be felt. The billboards, queues for tickets, the articles in newspaper, the crowd and of course the cricket itself. Really used feel wonderful whether at The Eden Gardens or the Wankhade.
Add Sehwag to the list and the next 10 years Indian batting ruled the world. We won matches in Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, series in Pakistan, England, NZ, BD... they were the architects of the current Indian team. They set the benchmark...
