The fact that this track only plays when you're at war, in the modern era and playing a European civ, and yet I still recognise it better than some civs' main themes speaks volumes about the quality of this track

This game made me realize that I can't be a president of a nation.
I begin always peaceful, then someone decide to attack me/betray me and I win the first defensive war.
Then they begin to piss me off (for example, France decides to acquire a cell that is vital for my city to comunicate with roads because it's a lemb of earth very small, so only one road can be placed) and to make sure that My nation can prosper I decide to go in war with France. I could stop by conquering the first city.... but I think that the land is too small for the two of us so I proceed to destroy France.
Then some nations begins to denounce me but some of them are my friend... until they decide to betray me.
And then a big war explode between me and the most powerful nations in the world.
At the end of the war the enemies are gone or they are almost destroyed... and at that point I became a crazy bloodthirst warlord that wants all the world.
And to think that I wanted to live in peace...

Following the trench warfare which took place in the poppy fields of Flanders during WWI, red poppies became a symbol of the flowers that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers. On May 3rd, 1915, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote the following poem:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
    In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields

"The end of the Anglo-Russian Wars saw the rise and fall of great kingdoms and empires that were once thought to rule entire continents. When Russia's Ambitions tried to intervene otherwise, it brought Chaos and Confusion. Discord and Destruction. A dark age for humanity had set in; what little progress there was for mankind had been exchanged for progress to the war.
"In the end, Russia's Ambitions died along with their people, and their country. Many nations paid the ultimate price in the ensuing chaos. Although we have our continental empires as we had initially imagined, it is not anywhere near the same. The peace between the surviving superpowers is tenuous. And unlikely to last.
"... It is said that somewhere in the of the fields Panasia, there was a battlefield where millions of soldiers had fallen over hundreds of years. War had scarred and maimed the land for generations afterward. It remains a derelict battleground. A barren, flat landscape with no vegetation.
"But... I believe, hundreds of years from now, if we were to survive that long, there would be life again.
"And it would be in the form of the most beautiful Field of Poppies that the world had ever seen."

This can't be happening. It's got to be a bad dream. A very, very long bad dream, that you'll wake up from any minute now, any year now.
Think about when it started. With your foreign affairs advisor shaking you awake in the middle of the night, presenting you with an electronic tablet. On it was playing a video, on which Gandhi announced that your age was coming to an end.
The following months, you can barely remember. There was barely time any time to commit anything to memory, amid the frantic levying of strong young men from the fields and offices and shops, the hasty weaponization of those men through cruel and primitive training schemes, the amalgamation of what remained of those men into units and divisions and armies. You knew what war was, of course, but you had hoped that you would never again have to fight one, after surviving the Mongol invasions a thousand years ago.
Maybe, had you kept a closer eye on your soldiers, you would have seen what was coming. Maybe you'd have paid more attention to the glint in their once-innocent eyes, after those first lucky victories over Gandhi's vanguard. Maybe you would have seen, behind the hollowness that their training had instilled, the growing bloodlust.
Maybe you would have sued for peace as soon as Gandhi's invasion force crumbled, before your armies crossed the border for the counter-assault.
Now, of course -- it's too late. Your own generals don't know what to do anymore, and every officer below them is part of the fire consuming India. Delhi is gone. Mumbai is gone. Bangalore is gone. And your soldiers, running out of enemies to slay, are beginning to turn on each other, or on your allies.
And there are rumors they might return home, hungry for more bloodshed. Perhaps they'd spare your own citizens until they've run out of Indian refugees to hunt, but you know they wouldn't stop there.
It's been fifteen years, and there are reports that one of the rogue armies is heading northeast, straight for your border. But today, foreign affairs approaches you, once again, with a tablet. This time, it's running a video call.
"How does it feel?" Gandhi asks, wearing his signature calm smile.
"I should be asking you," you growl. "Your cities are ruins. Your farmland is ash. Your people are charnel. Why did you even start this preposterous war? You never could have won."
"Oh, but I have," Gandhi chuckles. "Goodbye, your majesty."

That's because Civilization V aims to capture more aspects of being the leader of a nation than just conquest. This is supposed to kill your war mood because the blood of your nation's fighting sons and daughters is on your hands. When this song plays it makes the game all the more real for me. I imagine what some real world leaders must feel when the flag draped coffins start to arrive. What must they feel when they see the now childless parents and fatherless children holding vigil? Truly a great game if you dive into it with empathy.

Good job Civ5... treating the symptom, but not the cause. If players and AI would only go away and not place cities few tiles away from my borders (messing with city growth) I wouldn't have to go and raze the damn things.
