Talking the Grunge word, Soundgarden's greatness, Kurt Cobain's memory, and underrated Grunge bands - Видеоклипы
The video portion of the interview is from 2009
The audio portion is from 2020
What do you mean by that?? I can clearly detect the audio being in exact sync with what they're saying on screen
One thing I like about Grunge is that every band sounds different from one another, unlike Hair Metal
Except STP, Stone Temple Pilots just sounded like every grunge band combined
@@sillyman1709
That’s true, but they were a great band also.
What came after that was a joke, when the
record labels were trying to find a new Nirvana
or a new Pearl Jam.
@@kiekko673 I agree, I remember first seeing Silverchair and I was like Yup, this is when grunge starts to fade away
Pablo, Steel Panther rocks!
The way Eddie feels about The Who is how I feel about the grunge movement as a whole. Broke out in 91 so I was born 14 years too late.
So sorry Dude. At least you have all their epic albums (Ten, Vs, & Vitalogy are th4 best in my opinion), along with Soundgarden, AIC, Mother Love Bone, STP, etc....to relive in spirit was us Gen X'ers were & are so fortunate to have experienced live. I was 15 in 91', went to Lolapalloza 93'-94' (when it was ALL rock, metal, & solid hip hop), & have experienced all my (still) favorites before we lost so many legends (my saviors). What a time for killer music & to be alive & free!
I had the privilege of seeing Stone Temple Pilots during the
Purple Tour and let me tell ya, it was amazing vibe. Seeing them with the Meat Puppets and Redd Kross in Portland is something that will never happen again. But, I wish I could have seen lollapalooza in the 90’s. That would have been awesome.
Grunge was the last great rock movement.
No I don't agree with that I'm sorry but we all have opinions.
@@bradenallen5914 So what was?
It wasn't really a movement though was it? I would say it was a small local scene of very vaguely similar bands that the media tried to present as a movement so it could be packaged and sold to the masses. The last great movement was probably indie or alternative rock of which the Seattle scene was one facet. In my opinion.
@@thetomfair Nirvana changed everything, and thanks to Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam and others exploded, killing off hair metal and the popular culture of the 1980s. That's called a movement.
@@nathankrush3289 You're right, Nirvana and co. certainly put paid to hair metal although I'm not sure the same could be said about pop culture given the terrible commercial pop music of the 90s. But to me a movement is when a style of music has various unifying elements that are then adopted globally so you might find a local punk scene in Japan or a metal scene in Romania. For example. As far as I'm aware there are no local grunge scenes. I doubt there's even one in Seattle. And even the main band themselves were reluctant to call themselves grunge. It was a media hyped thing...they needed to give this thing a name when really it was a local variant of indie rock...
So cool hearing these guys talk about those days and give props to bands like Mudhoney and of course Soundgarden
"They (Soundgarden) took to a level that we are still working on": Eddie Vedder's greatness is all here: being modest, he recognizes others' talent and tries to improve himself, constantly.
Only true, great artists can do this.
Bullshit. He's a diva.
It's factual too, respect to PJ intended but in truth in terms of albums, they've never created anything close in terms of the unique brilliance of Superunknown or even Down the Upside, Chris Cornell was by far the most brilliant song composer of that scene combined with Kim, Matt, Ben who all brought something of their own that was unique. PJ after their 2nd album predominantly became a Vedder Gossard song writing duo
I remember when all that 90's music was hittin'...AND HOW GREAT IT WAS...i was thinkin' how we were kinda 'living the music experience' kinda like the 60's era.
Each era has its treasures...
Just the fact there was such great music at that time...everything was so fabulous 🌼 i loved every second of it!!
Which treasures am I missing from this "era" happening now?
@@billybats4745 ...not too sure
I am still listening to the 'good ol stuff...' 🌼
@@billybats4745 Only the bands still standing from then are releasing anything worthy of considering in the ballpark of great music imo. Also imo music died after the 90s. 2000 on it has just been the undead walking around with no real purpose. There are exceptions of course but most of those are old bands still killing it and the new ones either don't last long because the mindset about music and how we consume it has changed dramatically.
I just imagine Eddie being asked questions hes answered a million times before and a little thought bubble appearing above his head of him jumping off of sound equipment into a massive crowd
Lol
Damn, even 27 years later,Kurt still touches people,he came like a king and left like a legend!
grunge helped me out in a lot of boring nights when i felt alone. thanks Matt Chris Eddie Kim Ben all you guys! ..thank you
a 16 year old Southern Young Man from Florida & Georgia found his way to Seattle, and the young man meets Mr. Quincy Jones and a shy guy by the name Mr. Jimi Hendrix! Quite an amazing moment for that young southern man to travel the farthest distance away he could have possibly gone in his home country from his home states to Seattle! Considering the young Southern Man was legally blind to travel that far at age 16 and once he gets here he spent roughly 2 years at Seattle & Sir Mr. Ray Charles actually was the first person/musician to give Mr. Jimi Hendrix his first paid music gig ever! Can Ya See Me Now?!?!?
Chris Cornell is an underrated member of this movement and there are several reasons for this, among them: He was the pathfinder of Grunge SOUNDGARDEN was the first band to have a signature and to sort of authenticate this term grunge that didn't even exist before. He formed TEMPLE OF THE DOG which was a tribute to Andy (another underrated grunge band due to his early death) and with Eddie Vedder, which after this band, allowed the formation of Pearl Jam. And perhaps the most underrated reason of all is that Nirvana put grunge on the rise from SEATLLE but there were bands with better and much richer content than them.
Cornell was more poetic than the Beatles, heavier than Black Sabbah and with a vocal timbre compared to Freddie Mercury. He was a musician with a combination of excellent vocal, melodic and artistic quality.
NO ONS SINGS LIKE YOU ANYMORE.
Yeah totally I agree with you 👏🏻 😎👍🏻
I've never heard Chris Cornell described as under rated. No male vocalist could match his talent at his peak.
Agreed, he is the G.O.A.T
You need to go back further; MLB, Green River, Malfunkshun etc and then to The Sonics, The Wailers etc and more all played their part. L’Andrew was the unique character that started Kurt wearing dresses and more.
Chris Cornell Fanclub on fb.
I love Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam ❤️ PEARL JAM FOR LIFE 😊💓 love this interview!!
They way eddie wished he was born earlier to see those bands he loves is the same way I wish I was born earlier so I would’ve been able to have seen Pearl Jam and all the great bands that were the grunge movement
I was born in 99 lol for the people who would’ve wondered how old I am 😄
Yes it was amazing to witness the "grunge" scene come alive. I still remember to this day exactly where I heard Nirvana for the first time, and it blew me away. Total different sound, authentic, raw. And then PJ's Jeremy video also rocked the music scene a few months later and it totally changed the music scene in 1 year.
I was 17/18 when this scene was blowing up and out of the Big 4...PJ was by far my favorite. It just captured me in a way the others didnt not to say I didnt enjoy those bands as well as others. My favs at the time were PJ, Smashing Pumpkins and Rage Against the Machine. Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails were also big to me at the time. I saw PJ in November of '93 in Indio, CA. If you havent seen it, it's on RUclips and was one of the most memorable shows for better or worse for this time in their careers. Between the Grunge explosion and the rise of "gangsta" rap in the early '90s it was an amazing time to live through.
Them saying that Pearl Jam was in their honeymoon right after they canned Dave Abbruzzese is laughable. Matt Cameron turned PJ into just a normal rok band
No PJ's frankly lazy album writing with lots of dull fillers assured that, as adjudged by many album reviews and different critics down the years... PJ retracted from their earlier music and sound deliberately to deescalate the hype around them and this was prior to MC's arrival in 97, Matt had little to do with PJ retracting into becoming a dull rock band writing songs by numbers. On an album such as Riot Act that is full of frankly forgetful songs, a creative standout song on the album & when performed live is You Are which Cameron wrote
Eddie Vedder wishing he was a 60's child for the music...THEN realizes he was a HUGE part of an equally legendary music movement (so he's happy!!!) 🥰🎵🎸🎵
Kurt hated Eddie because he was a corporate creation. Get a clue.
Eddie has such a perfect voice!!! Love this kind of vids, i hear stuff i never new🤘
Part of the "Mods"... Perfect! Love you Eddie for saying that.
Fantastic interviews! Love Eddie's voice! Love Pearl Jam!💖🎸
😃 I love you, Grunge🧡🖤💛💚❤️🌲
The Sonics were way ahead of their time.
Everybody forgets Cat Butt 😂. Love the video!
He mentioned The Fastbacks :)
Kurt, you were first. I was 12 years old and I would run home from school to catch your music videos. One day I ran home and Kurt Loader came on the tv instead. And Chris, I was listening to you and SG then as well, when you went here a few years ago I was already in my 30’s. I was crushed, I thought of you like Lanegan. I thought you two had made it out alive and would be our remaining ambassadors well into our old age. I miss y’all, I miss those days.
Mookie Blaylock fucking rocks! Who the hell is Pearl Jam?
😂
Ya they went downhill after the name change!
BEST COMMENT!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
A lame corporate band.
@@SMokeUCantHandle they fought ticket master but call them what u want
It often feels like Soundgarden is somewhat ignored, yet they were amazing. . . Especially Chris. Nobody sang like Chris. They are often credited with starting the grunge movement. I'm glad to hear Eddie give them praise.
Love the interviews! Liked and subscribed! 🤘😼🤘
I was a baby in the early 90s, love grunge. I gotta start checking Mudhoney!
Being from Seattle and immersed in the local music scene in the early 90’s, Grunge was NOT in the local vernacular. It was a label slapped on us by outsiders. Nobody here refers to anything as “Grunge” even to this day.
And nobody liked Pearl Jam either, and Nirvana wasn't from Seattle.
I gotta catch em live.
Chris Cornell’s curly hair is perfection!
I think of Grunge as a time period, not a music type.
Agreed.
I think of it as more of an aesthetic.
Grunge was a brilliant movement...👍🏻🎸🤘🏻
Why when people talk grunge they leave out ALICE IN CHAINS . They was one of the greatest bands out of Seattle.
The bands here may have some stories where people say there were beefs and so and so didn't like so and so however truth be known all the guys and gals from our beloved bands up in here all supported each other and they all went to each other's shows and filled in for each other if someone needed a tech, a bass player, whatever the fuck!
God Loves Grunge.....Est 1966
What about the legendary band TAD they played a huge part so underrated
IT'S WAAAARRRRRTIME! ,there was a Subpop tour in England 89/90ish. Mudhoney/Soundgarden/Tad/Nirvana. Who'd of thought Nirvana going on first?🏴🏴🏴
Eddie mentioned Tad as great.
A band that really deserve more recognition is Slint (and squirrel bait)
Cobain
I've read more than enough of these comments to complain about how nobody mentioned Presidents of the United States Of America, Green Jelly, STP EVEN, and the Toadies.
I went to Bremerton Washington in 1992… I was in the navy, and I met a girl in Seattle Molly , and she told me mudhoney was the BEST Seattle band ! I thought she was crazy but now every good boy deserves fudge and my brother the cow are two of my favorite all time albums…… who knew
As I recall, Eddie was so upset when he heard Kurt died that he trashed his hotel room. PJ has never been the hotel room trashing kind of band either.
Kurt hated the corporate boy band that was Pearl Jam
That question in 2021, really?!👊🤣🤘
when this was filmed?
Had a conversation I while ago about what 3 people you would hate to be stuck in a lift(elevator)...easy 3 for me ..never had the conversation who you would love to be stuck with ...1 would be Eddie ..fucking legend🎸❤
When is this interview from?
early 00s id say
What year was the first interview?
I have a feeling it was probably done during the Avocado album tour. 2006-07
hahaha isn't that the same interviewer who interviewed Nirvana where Kurt said "Did you hear what I said when he asked me if I wanted to do it?? I said fck no, I said heck no" (about doing the interview), and where the interviewer was so nervous he asked a question in such a weird way Kurt was like "... what?" llooool
Internet killed the rock star.
✊ it/they never die/s for me
That’s still my music. Just as I was forming my own music identity the whole scene blew up. I was 13.
#GrungeForever.🤘
C'mon Ed , the records had one hole in them 👀
MITB and SLTS changed everything.
They were the greatest and the only ones that survived and still are great
If grunge is mentioned so should Alice In Chains!
Eddie mentioned Alice.
@@jasonsguitarjourney2060 I meant in the title of the video..AiC should always be on the title of anything labeled grunge
Green river!
I guess I slept on "Gas Huffer" lol
Check out the album Janitors of Tomorrow
Melvins
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Melvins are the reason for it all
I'd give a nod to Green River and the Wipers too.
I get the point about the caricature; but I've gotta say, with 3 of the singers from the 4 biggest 'grunge' bands committing suicide (or close enough to), and the "I'm the man in the box buried in my shit /"the shades go down"/ throw down you umbilical noose" - kill me already lyrics ... it's not hard to see how they ended up being seen this way.
Is Layne mentioned at all??
Aic are mentioned
@@bobchow178 thank you, I skimmed over and need to rewatch then
Are we still doing this? 😆😆
They are probably soooooo sick of this question! ( what does grunge mean)
Alice In Chains should be on the title too...
Ha I’m first for the first time lol
Now look at Seattle and Portland not so great anymore
Soundgarden, maybe five good songs…
Alice in chains plays golf...
Pearl Jam became hippie Rock
Nirvana changed the music industry and popular culture. And this interviewer is annoying.
I got tired of Eddie and his politics. He is a very talented songwriter and singer, great artist but tired of his politics. Still a fan of the music for the most part. The Into the Wild stuff is great awesome.
What's wrong with his politics?
If Alice In Chains doesn’t get the respect they deserve…
Don’t think Ed gets the think for yourself vibe
Eddie wouldn't be where he is if not for Andy...... Sorry, but it's true.....
@@travzimmerman1340 Yeah, but if Andy didn't leave us, there wouldn't be Pearl Jam
@@oldsoulone1217 there would be bad radio
I would like to listen their finished stuff
Screaming trees was a band before any of them. quintessential grunge sound
