With so many of the parts either resting or playing the same thing, I feel like a quartet would have been a better arrangement for this.

I love clarinet octet because it sounds like duplication of same copy of melody with addition two more keys both in upper and lower octave on foot-pumped harmonium. Thus it not only duplicates melody but also chords in both upper and lower octaves. It gives more warmth than quartet and quintet. In case of quartet only the melody is duplicated both in upper and lower octave but addition of two more notes to make chords that comes between the duplication of melody on both of the octaves is not duplicated in the lower octave. In case of quintet the primary melody is duplicated on both upper and lower octaves. Secondary melody which goes in contrary motion with primary melody is played only in the lower octave and territory melody which adds a note lower in parallel motion with melody is also duplicated both in upper and lower octave. When all the five instrumentalists simultaneously play it gives the effect of foot-pumped harmonium. I love such arrangements of woodwind musical instruments as mentioned above. Such arrangements gives pleasant and energetic sense. Octet is more energetic than quartet and quintets.

Is there a reason that that quarter note fermata looks really satisfying on the page or am I just crazy? Good stuff!

    That is a minor ?

No, it’s in G minor. Clarinet’s are naturally tuned in the key of Bb, so what would be the note Bb on the piano would be a C on the clarinet.

Milan Soloma Eoin Yeah I knew this but doesn't it change the actual tuning of the piece ?

B flat clarinets have ‘2 flats start’ on the violins so they and other “c” instruments are in G minor.
