Seriously, though, Rue's whole character arc was excellent in the book and actually explained why she wanted to hang with Katniss and why she wanted her to sing, but the movie was like "here have one 2 minute scene with Katniss and Rue together to establish their relationship. Now feel something when she dies."

Yeah, like you find out she's so good at climbing and moving through trees because she was in charge of sending messages to workers in the orchards back home. And the whistle she uses to communicate with Katniss is the signal she would use to tell people the work day was over and all the Mockingjays would spread it throughout the fields. And singing was like their only source of entertainment while they worked so songs and singing were really important to them. But lol all of that was glossed over in the movie and she was just kind of reduced to a poorly executed tear-jerker moment...

Like: him waving at the audience and holding hands with Katniss to gain attention from the audience, and hence sponsors. Him trying to use the love story of him and Katniss to attract sponsors. In catching fire too, there were a lot scenes like that. FFS that pregnancy bomb that he dropped on the Capitol to stop the games lol. He even saved district 13 in Mockingjay 1 with his warning on television. But the books did it all a lot better, of course.

4:25 that old woman was not the one who gave her the mockingjay pin in the 1st book hence why you're so confused. In the books, it was Madge Undersee, the mayor's daughter and Katniss' friend from school, who gave Katniss the pin to use as a district token. It originally belonged to Madge's aunt who were also a tribute alongside with Haymitch. She was part of district 12's upper middle class so it wasn't a problem for Madge to give away that gold pin.

edit: she has grey eyes my mistake 😔
the way they turned “olive skinned, brown eyed, dark haired 16 year old” katniss into jennifer lawrence with brown hair will never fail to grind my gears...it was obvious in the book that the richer people in district 12 had blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin like her mother and peeta :))) katniss constantly describes herself as looking like a “typical Seam resident” as well as Gale.
it’s how they convinced the Capitol they were cousins
plus when they completely wrote out Peeta losing his leg and having a prosthetic after the 2nd book
i think the aging up of Katniss really ruined that whole love triangle, the point in the books seemed to be that she wasn’t interested in both in the first book, in the second she fell in love with the idea of distancing herself from the Capitol and marrying Gale like expected , in the second half of Catching Fire and the third book she realised that Gale could never understand what she had been through and Peeta felt her pain.
to Katniss it wasn’t “which cute boy” but which life she would choose, to try and forget and be a tradwife or move forward and try to heal
i don’t think people give enough credit to Gale turning her down to fight for other people either. despite him being almost weirdly groomed by President Coin into doing uncharacteristic things

Man thank you that's what I kept telling everyone. Race factors into the poverty issue so hard. But also the white washing of all the districts is weird af. Like the movies really made a whole district black and think that wouldn't come off as racist af. It felt like some weird form of segregation where all the black people were put together for no reason especially as that wasn't how it was in the books. Reading the book first and then watching this film was my worst mistake. I left the movies mad.
But for real all the things they skipped sometimes frustrates me because it adds more to how awful this world and their lives really are and explains so many things that lack context because they werent shown well like not including the girl who escaped in the ending of the first book.

I don't even think it's the fault of the movies. It was more clear in the books because we got to look inside her head, but even in the movies she never seemed particularly interested in Peeta or Gale romantically. And her "happily ever after" featured war flashbacks.
I think the issue is that people watching it only saw "YA", "female protagonist", and "love triangle" and immediately came to the conclusion that it was frilly wish fulfilment garbage. Because anything teen girls like is obviously trash.

i feel like katniss was implied to be indigenous (or at least mixed) in the books? her sister and mom were said to be pale and blonde, but katniss and her dad had swarthy olive complexions and black hair. it's pretty annoying how all the uprising scenes and scenes of injustice are depicted heavily with actors of color, yet the main cast (and most of the other tributes) are white? it makes sense that the kids from the "favored"/more privileged districts are white, but i feel like it would be more powerful if the other districts had more diversity to reflect america's racial economic inequality and regional divide.
without diversity to reflect real life systemic inequalities, this story just becomes another "WOW what if inequality was real??" sob story for privileged people to wank to. boring

Few other things I thought of:
    1. Peeta and Gale are way more interesting in the books. I actually liked how the author approached the relationships. Gale had a promising start as the romantic lead, but I got the feeling they ended up wanting different things out of life as time went on, he couldn't deal with her post-war PTSD and depression, and he had major resentment issues over Peeta. It got very toxic very fast. They way downplayed Peeta.
    2. Peeta and Katniss had more chemistry in the book. He was generally more charismatic and less of an airhead. I felt genuine friendship, or at least the start of it, develop between them over the first book. I can't say whether or not she truly fell in love with him by the series' end, but there is no question of his devotion to her. I get why they ended up together and if that brings her some happiness I can't complain.
    3. Katniss mother has a whole backstory. The short version is that she has severe depression and is almost always emotionally checked out. This is a major criticism Katniss has, as it forced her to be the adult/parent running the household at an early age. It is also a contributing factor to her own lack of reactivity to anything and heavily stunted emotions.
    4. The other kids in the games weren't so cartoonishly evil. They weren't exactly good people you were rooting for, but a lot of their behavior was purely practical. They were survivalists first.
    5. The choice to let them both win was a split-second decision on the part of the host, likely to please the capitol's upper class citizens and the districts. President Snow confirms that he disapproved and the movie reasonably hinted that he ordered the host to be killed.
    6. The book description of Katniss is ethnically ambiguous, so making her mixed or having a minority actress could have been a neat way to add layers of subtext in the movie that weren't in the book. I remember people throwing a fit over whether or not she was white before the film came out though. People were also concerned about how they would portray a minority if they went it that direction. I wouldn't be surprised if Hollywood saw all that and decided it was safer to go with the white actress anyway.

@Bille Nye The Russian Spy I'll admit that I was a little surprised when Rue was black. I tend to skim over physical descriptions and just assign them myself based on who I know in real life (I'm a speed reader/skimmer), so I pictured them both as looking like my little sister at that age because that's the whole parallel between the two characters and I'm the same age gap as Katniss and Prim/Rue, so i couldnt tell you how they were described in the books. But I didn't understand why it was such a big deal that Rue wasn't white or whatever. I thought it added a little bit of layers to the movie, where they weren't just segregated by class, but also race. I just wish they had done a bit more with it if they were going to call attention to the segregation in the film

Your comments make me think of how when this movie came out, there was a controversy over how Jennifer Lawrence was cast instead of a POC because the description of Katniss in the book leads the reader to believe that she is of mixed heritage. The book even goes into the class distinctions between the citizens in District 12 and how their features differentiate from each other. It's why Katniss's mom has fair skin and blonde hair because she was from the "upper class" while Katniss's father was from the "lower class".

And I made the point of how society treated this story the EXACT same way that the watchers in the Capitol did. How we as an audience focused so much on "romance" and arguing about who was "better for her" that we willingly turned a blind eye to the actual point. 👏🏻

Yes yes yes, the romance and the perfect rebellious hero, because that's what people want to see.
When in fact the point of the books was to show that both sides are kind of evil, war is awful, mostly just propaganda, and Katniss was just used for that.
And for the romance part, she was mostly just thinking that she didn't have the time or nerve to think about it, and was annoyed to be pressured to make a decision, what a queen

Also, if they both died together, it might cause a domino effect and set an example for other district tributes to die together without an actual winner, causing more dissatisfaction in the capital gamblers.

I’m the books Katniss, Gale, Haymitch, and many others in the seam were described with olive skin and grey eyes so it could make sense if they came from Native American descent. And many people from the merchant section. Of the district had Blue eyes and blond hair so in the book there was some sort of line between the rich (but still poor) and the very poor
Also, the flashback scene is from when Katniss and her family almost died from starvation and she was trying to sell baby cloths for money for food. She was so tired she fell to her knees infront of the bakery where peeta saw her. So he burned the bread a little so he’d have to take it out. There he threw it to Katniss and she took and it saved her from dying. And then the next day it turns out he was beat for doing that by his mother.
This was my first video I’ve seen from you and it’s super great so far!

It was being filmed with the permission and input of the Osage tribe. It's based on the book Killers of the Flower Moon which covers the FBI investigation into the mass murder of Osage tribe members for their mineral rights in Oklahoma. From what I've seen about Suzanne Collins, she was making a point with Katniss' race and gender, and Rue's for that matter. Katniss is only in it because she was _pulled_ into it through the Reaping, and otherwise never would've wanted anything to do with social rebellion/societal change. That's showcased even moreso by book 2 and 3, where she's found to be shit ass at propaganda films, really unwilling to be Coin's puppet, and altogether only a symbol because everybody made her a symbol. The initial three-finger salute for Rue is another point: Rue, a young Black girl, is killed pretty off-handedly, and the guy Katniss easily kills in return is never really mentioned again because Rue _matters_ to Katniss, reminds her of Prim. When Katniss puts the flowers around Rue's body and sings and does the salute, it's a public statement of defiance that _yes this Black girl matters; no I will not let her death pass by without saying her name._ Truly, Katniss doesn't want to be a part of any of this even in later books, but she has to be because she's been affected, and it's a parallel to how many white people don't really engage with movements like BLM or, historically speaking, abolitionism/Civil Rights until it's on their doorstep, until the South fires on Fort Sumter or the Alabama police use firehoses and dogs or now middle/low class white people are affected by gun violence, wage stagnation, and inescapable poverty. District 11 really gets the Rebellion going, and Katniss has very little---in the end---to do with its victory over President Snow, even if there's a whole mission in book 3 to assassinate him because the Rebellion's army storms the Capital by the time the small mission team get there.
Ultimately, Katniss' character is very much written, thematically speaking, as a white girl. I think there's a more interesting, and broader in scope, story from one or more person of color's perspective in this narrative world, that really centers on the _movement_ that the Districts put together to take over the Capital. Collins' thematic point is that white people must acknowledge and refuse to brush away the injustice done to POC, and shows us through the plot that happens _to_ and _around_ Katniss that she isn't the main character of the momvement, she _doesn't_ swoop in like any white knight and win the fight for the Rebellion. She cares about Peeta, and that's mostly it unless she's in the thick of fighting. Her big moments are in front of the bombed hospital in book 3 and the Rue scene in book 1, which are entirely symbolic and none of the real work of organizing the Rebellion, which Coin purposefully tries to keep her out of.
Which is all fine and dandy, and I think Collins' point is correct in concept, but there's a real lack of any POC in this franchise except Rue and Thresh, and I think it inevitably undermines the theme. What I really, _really_ want is an author of color to write a dystopia that pulls no punches from a person of color's perspective. (To be fair, some of that already exists, it's just that those aren't the books that get _big_ big, which interestingly enough, is a sub-theme of The Hunger Games, that a white girl had to make the statement, had to be the face of the movement, because people "trust her" by other characters' own admission. And we're seeing the undermining of own-voices to this day.)
I apologize for the AP Lit thesis, but uh. Stan own-voices, donate to Native causes, and help out/protest with BLM.
Edit because I forgot to add it and couldn't not: the moment with Rue would be more powerful from an actress of color. To be real, _99% of all dystopia fiction_ would be more powerful from a non-white perspective. But generally, white audiences don't receive those kinds of books well because they always _swear_ they could spot a dictatorship or an authoritarian government, and yet perpetuated those things among and against people of color ever since colonialization got going in the early 1500s, so unless the dystopia is against white people too, they tend to receive it as just "politically complex" fiction, and not dystopian. Considering the makeup of most of the genre (though lately it's starting to get better), the only difference between The Hunger Games and a more direct dystopian novel with a main character of color written by an author of color is that white people don't accept it as dystopian because it's not oppressing them (or set during WW2, the only consistent exception I've seen when it comes to genre convention).

this is a really really good point however it was the movie's choice to make her white. In the books she's heavily implied to be a poc. hollywood just did exactly what the capitol did in the books-- took out the message and made it a romance so that it would be acceptable and entertaining to privileged audiences.
