Blue Angels F/A-18 Super Hornets Arrive for the 2021 Fort Lauderdale Air Show to Celebrate 75 Years

- 2021 marks the 75th Anniversary of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the second oldest formal aerobatic team in the world (after the French Patrouille de France). This milestone also marks 2 major changes for the legendary flight demonstration squadron. They have retired their Legacy Hornets to upgrade to the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and their C-130T has also been replaced with a C-130J Super Hercules. This massive logistics support aircraft is still affectionately called, "Fat Albert."
This special media event was on Thursday May 6, 2021, at Hollywood - Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL). This is 2 days before the 2021 Fort Lauderdale Air Show on Ft. Lauderdale Beach (May 8 & 9). The Blue Angels made an impressive flyover before landing and pulling into the area we were all standing in. We were able to get up close to the planes and I even had the opportunity of interviewing Commander Ben Walborn - #5 Blue Angel - Lead Solo pilot.
Ben Sorenson, Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner of District 4, presented the Blue Angels with a Proclamation on behalf of the city of Fort Lauderdale.

I have enjoyed watching the Blue Angels since 1974. I was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point North Carolina 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. At that time they were transitioning to the A-4 Skyhawk from the F-4 Phantom. The new Fat Albert C-130 is a great aircraft the air frame has never failed the Super Hornet just WOW. I hope I get to see them this year. GySgt Retired
I saw them flying over my house just a few days ago. They had the vapor trails and were flying low. I can't name anything cooler. I love living in florida

I live in Imperial Point and they flew right over the top of my house on a couple of passes and a 200 yards or so away from my house for half a dozen passes. Very cool indeed.
I was working there and i watched them practice for that show.
I think the fella with the Navy shirt on giving the speech didn’t realize that there are many United States Marines on the team also from maintainers to pilots of not only the F-18 Super Hornets but the support plane and all that fly Fat Albert are United States Marines! Fly Navy!!
The man giving the speech and presenting the Proclamation is Ben Sorenson, Fort Lauderdale City Commisioner. He is also a Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander. I'm sure he must know that the team is made up of Marines in addition to Navy. I didn't know that until covering this that day and found that fact to be quite interesting. Each Blue Angel F-18 has "U.S. Navy" written on them while the C-130J has "United States Marines" written on it. Thanks for pointing that out to the viewers!

Specialized landing gear is what makes a super hornet. They land on aircraft carriers.

This show used to be Fort Lauderdale Air & Sea Show. It's now Fort Lauderdale Air Show. Even though there used to be a lot of action on the water, I don't remember ever seeing aircraft carriers. That would be awesome. As for the Stealth B2 Bomber, check out my video of the 2021 Miami Beach Air & Sea Show which took place 3 weeks after this show. Surprised they don't fit "quick-attach" reflective covers on the canopies, like you might put under a car windscreen. Nothing degrades interiors more than UV. That sun would be a killer on plastics and other special finishes inside those jets.
