My biggest objection was Maverick just walking up and flying the Dark Star on his own recognizance and flying half a mach past what he was told the plane could handle, resulting in the destruction of the aircraft and somehow, he survives.
@alexanderdgray Half a mach at altitude is about 300 mph. Didn't destroy The SR71s that reached 3.5 mach and the faster A12. Pilots and radar confirmed this. Mach is not a constant. Altitude has to be considered as well as engine temperature but we have no military aircraft that can reach SR71 speed or altitude. Areobatics an important part of fighter pilots ' training to develop air combat abilities in trainee fighter pilots, specially for dogfight scenarios. Yes, it's unfair to compare Tomcat (F-14) with a 5th gen fighter jet, but in case of a dogfight between the two, result very much depends upon the skills and abilities of the fighter pilot that's flying the aircraft. In a BVR combat 5th gen fighter jet can easily shoot down Tomcat(F-14).

Mav getting saved by plot armor is such a Tom Cruise thing. The Su-57s Autocannon would have shredded the F-14 to pieces, also terrain wouldn't have messed up the targeting, that makes zero sense.
To me, the thing that didn't make sense about the mission was where the highest danger from the G-forces would be. It would be the pull-up at the bottom of the crater, not the actual climb out. Right? The movie make it seem like the vertical climb out of the crater exerted the highest amount of G-force, rather than the turn at the bottom.
Nice video! The F-14 is a kino aircraft, but people don't realize how many hornet pilots in the 80s and 90s would eat Tomcats everyday for lunch in simulated dogfights.
Great reaction video. The 5th gen Fighters we're only about 4 to 1 over the older ones. So there is a chance , tho slimmer , a Tomcat could prevail. Especially with less trained pilots as adversaries against Top Gunners. Maybe not F*cked but definitely in deep.
@@5co756 well the 57 is not really a true fifth gen to start with its a 4.5 and to be honest did you think those su-57's would get a lot of in cockpit dogfight training and even if they did they would be training vs planes that fly like the f-18 not the f-14
Just spit ballin here but a 5th gen’s advantage is stealth and long range, right? Once they’re a couple hundred feet away that goes away so wouldn’t attacking them unexpectedly make it possible?
5th Gen fighters like the F-22 and SU-57 have far more advanced flight control systems, and thrust vectoring. The F-14 is very big and heavy and lacks any of these advanced systems. In close in dogfights with guns only some fighters like the F-16 or Typhoon may be able to get kills on 5th gen aircraft, however when adding off bore axis missiles like AIM-9X to the 5th gen fighters it becomes very one sided.
Fifth generation fighters are also typically designed to be excellent at ACM, because the current belief is that when two fifth generation fighters meet it will be guns and IR missiles that will decide the fight. That being said they shouldn't give up their advantage by getting close to fourth generation fighter unless the situation requires it, like with the SU57s merge with the F-14 trying to figure out if it is friendly. Once they knew that the F-14 was hostile that third SU57 should've just engaged the F-14 from longer range.
Because it's IGN The scenario of older generation machine up against 5th Gen isn't that simple. The old gen aircraft is about almost wearing out still workable machine that is ready to fight against the latest and against heavy odds just is an indicator of the situation that the Hero was in. It demonstrates the atmosphere and restrictions under which the perticular Top Gun instructor worked out what he faced, and how he was within to face difficult conditions. Reflects on Tom Cruise personality and also the screenwriter who wrote the entire scene. Special thanks to that guy, too. If you work hard, don't expect any less than challenge you can face, win or lose. Not neat and clean out of factory gun. That's not who Top Guns are perhaps. Kudos to the Top Guns.
The F-14 seems to be under estimated by alot of people, very capable aircraft and in the right scenario it could probably hang with modern fighter jets
Not sure why they kept emphasizing 5th Gen fighter over calling it a Su-57, which it was. There's a significant difference between F-22s, Su-57s, J-20s, and to some extent, the F-35 (which is more a 4++ given it's lack of supercruise and super-maneuverability). Also, that's an F-14A (the only version we ever exported, and exported it to Iran just before they declared war on us by invading our embassy), and from what I've seen of other videos, while the faster of the F-14s (till the D came out), it did have engine issues and took a while to get up to speed. So realistically, they had no chance. But you can't beat plot armor.
@@wokeydokey6885 Actually, it was just plot armor. That was an F-14A, which has engine issues and a weak radar (compared to today). Other than a surprise hit and gun run, with the 2 early AIM-9s the Tomcat was equipped with, it had no chance. The Su-57 can out perform the Tomcat is everything but overall top speed (and payload, but that's irrelevant for this discussion). The F-14A would be no match in acceleration, target acquisition, or maneuverability. Maverick won because the script said so. Real life, even a mediocre pilot would have won against Maverick in the F-14.
As per the “Cobra” maneuver Maverick uses where he goes over Rooster probably wouldn’t work in that particular jet and the move has no known use and has never been recorded in a dogfight it’s usually a jet show move but in a fight questionable if it would even work

Callsign Tinder is crazy.... the Navy is relentless 😂😂😂
It's a shame we never got the super tomcat..
Re: experience difference, Col John Boyd was able to shoot down anyone he came up against in 20 seconds. Not the long drawn out dogfights in TGM.
Ever seen a full-bird still flying - even for skunkworks?
This is way better than CinemaSins. This is some informative and enjoyable nitpicking.
What about Bob wearing glasses? Can pilots have corrected vision now?
Bob wasn't a pilot, He was a weapons systems officer. And yes, aviators can have corrected vision. Most that do wear contacts, not glasses.
For someone with the callsign "Tinder" this dude is as exciting as a flat tyre.
Awesome break down, and ty for your service sir. 🇺🇲
Great reaction video. The 5th gen Fighters we're only about 4 to 1 over the older ones. So there is a chance , tho slimmer , a Tomcat could prevail. Especially with less trained pilots as adversaries against Top Gunners. Maybe not F*cked but definitely in deep.
I’d trust professionals unless you’re somekind of lagendary ex professional air force pilot
5th generation fighters are not piloted by noobs you know , it's just Hollywood .
@@5co756 well the 57 is not really a true fifth gen to start with its a 4.5 and to be honest did you think those su-57's would get a lot of in cockpit dogfight training and even if they did they would be training vs planes that fly like the f-18 not the f-14
Another entertaining video Leagle Eagle's review of the movie with a JAG lawyer. Let's just say "Can you say death penalty, boys and girls?"
2:13 rooster's at 100ft, maverick pulls up and behind him, suddenly (2:17) rooster's at 8000ft 🙄 immediate lock 😆
Different scenes in the movie. Not from the same moment in the movie
Nope, it's the same scene
Because it's IGN
The scenario of older generation machine up against 5th Gen isn't that simple.
@@jimmymac5723 5th Gen don't have to be near for dog fight.. also they have and share more info as part of better than others RADAR
In the movie, their callsigns are flattering. Traditionally, this is not the case.
AWESOME... do another one with Alex Bowman and his opinion on the F-14D (new upgraded tomcats). Would love to hear his opinion on those.
New? The F14-D was the 1990s variant... It had avionics upgrades and bigger engines...
@@Tigermoto Exactly....?
This was fantastic! Thank you Alex!
Thank you, Lieutenant! o7
Its entertainment.. We know the fact that some parts will be too fantastic to be real but we enjoyed.
It’s called Hollywood! But thank you Alex for your expertise and service!
@6:50 what about GCAS or some sort of auto-leveling system to take over while the pilot is unconscious?
The only reason the f14 won is because maverick was flying it. Maverick could have beaten the felons even with a hang glider.
Ward Carol who was a Top Gun instructor gave it a great review
Ward Carol wasn't a Top Gun instructor
Considering the fact that TOP GUN graduates flew for the movie, I'd say it's pretty accurate
Thank you for your reaction !
Never mind the accuracy. It was entertaining movie with a lot of practical effects.
We all know how this guy got his call sign lmao dude must be swiping legend
Outstanding video, thanks for sharing! 👍
As per the “Cobra” maneuver Maverick uses where he goes over Rooster probably wouldn’t work in that particular jet and the move has no known use and has never been recorded in a dogfight it’s usually a jet show move but in a fight questionable if it would even work
If they weren't training they'd never have even got that close so just movie.
This is like Ace Combat the movie…I loved it!😂🤣😂🤣
Its missing unlimited missiles
Danger zone intensifies
Callsign: TINDER
EHARMONY: HOLD MY BEER 🍺😂
Well what about the racing the Jets sitting on a Ninja 😂. Vrommm 4:58 leaving the time stamp have no idea what it means lol love you all 💝. Thanks for your services aviators awesome 😎
Jesse: "...callsign: 'Tinder'"
Me: "godsfuckingdammit! What in the Appropriated Hel did you _do????????"_
Cw lemoine has a great reaction with other naval aviators that where also Air Force pilots
They seem to do better with Aviation flicks than Submarine flicks.
Agreed! SSN-598, A-Gang
The thing that bothered me about both movies was the on deck celebration at the end. As if the deck crew would even know what had just happened and would just abandon their duties to celebrate.
That's a suspicious call sign. LOL
I'm surprised that there were no comments made about being overflown by Tomahawks during ingress.
