Opinel Mods - folding knife modifications DIY christmas presents for outdoor, woodcarving, bushcraft

- I have already modified several Opinel knives and will take you step by step through the process today. I've tried a few different methods. The French folding knives are available with carbon steel or stainless steel and they are quite cheap.
First I take off the ring that locks the blade open and closed. Then I work on the beech wood handles with rasps, files and sandpaper. By the way, if you are wondering about this strange sand paper saw: I have the idea of Dave Canterbury, who has a great video about it.
As soon as the handles are finished I disassemble the folding knives. Often the pens have to be filed off a bit. With used knives, the pins are often a little bent and difficult to remove and replace. I had to replace one pin completely, I used a steel nail.
Now the groove for the blades is filed out a bit to make the folding process smoother and older blades are cleaned. Then the whole thing is put together again. Now the Opinels can also be used as one-handed knives or even as flippers.
I treat the handles with linseed oil and beeswax, the blades get a touch of ballistol after sharpening. With carbon steel, patterns can now be etched into the blades. This time I use hot mustard, but it is also possible to use horseradish. I have done this twice.
Afterwards the Opinel knives only have to be sharpened and the burr removed on a leather strap.
The beautiful, individual knives are ready, which you can use yourself for bushcrafting, carving, cooking or as EDC knives. Or you have great personal gifts for your next birthday, Christmas or whatever holiday you celebrate.

It feels so manly to make these opinel modifications. We all do it differently but as men it is a great feeling of achievement!
A beautiful expression of creativity and the human mind
Great video.
An Opinel was the first knife I bought for myself - in the good old days when a 13yo could do that with his newspaper round money.
Now I’m going to buy half a dozen and see if I make anything as good as yours.
Finally, someone who shows a good way to remove the pin. Stayed and subbed for the art. Thanks.
you´re welcome :) glad you liked it
You can easily remove the pin with a clip pliers (I think that's the english name of the tool, I'm french...) look at this video, it's pretty good ! ruclips.net/video/lZUAZXOPuD8/видео.html
those are really awesome mods
Thank you for continuing to bring to life the good old opinel knife, very nice achievement
You got me when you took that big badass crowbar to remove pin 🤣🤣
Really a good job. Cool bunch of presents.
You don't need to take it apart and sand the wood inside to have a free one hand opening. You just have to cook the whole knife in oil for 20-30 minutes. The wood becomes very dark too, and will be naturally protected from moisture. It would've saved you 3/4 of the time spent in the process.
oh thats interesting, never heard of that method, thanks!
@@bushcraftonbike687 That's because it's the destroy your heat treat and knock your edge off all the time method. I know it's a $15 knife these days, but putting in work always shows over short cuts. I'd personally rather have one of these knives you worked on than an Opinel french fry.
@@lucasmills1246 "Opinel french fry" :D
Great knifes
These look great.
Excellent work mate. They turned out beautiful.
thanks mate!
At first I was like "WTF" and then I was like "Dangg"

@@bushcraftonbike687 those knife are very nice . You did a great job .is that mustard you were mixing and put on the blades .do you just put the design on the blade and leave . If so how long do you leave it on the blade .
@@rickeybullington68 exactly, its hot mustard and I leave it on there for an hour more or less.
This is f** awesome.
Job well done sir

This is the definition of insanity. Long live insanity.
Great video thanks! You have a new subscriber! 👍
great job! i realy liked the ""curved one", the second one from the bottom.. i'd like to try making one myself although i don't think i can get such nice curves without a belt-sander..
I think it is very possible - although more work :)
Where did you buy that wet stone block?? And in order to make an easy flip blade do you have to make a new pin?
Just made the spey blade mode to mine Want to test it for skinning as to much point digs into flesh
Foarte frumos 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
perfekt !!!!
👌🔝
Geile mucke im Hintergrund !! 😁
Hi, I just found your great clip? You are not maybe selling some mods, as I am not able to do this on my own?
I love the second from above, kind of bowie blade and no etching
Best greetings from Los Angeles, Werner
Nice job! For how long did you let the mustard on the blade?
thank you! I let it on there for maybe an hour.
That's mustard ???
@@blondlezar8995 Yes. It's the acetic acid in the mustard doing the job, while its thickness allows for drawing patterns, which would be imposible with pure acetic acid or vinegar.
@@rogerflorensa Thanks !
Great video thanks. May I ask, what make/model is the first file/rasp you see in the film?
I think they are called Japanese saw rasps.
@@bushcraftonbike687 Many thanks indeed, I have found them and am looking at ordering one now. Keep up the great work, very enjoyable channel...
Hey Bushcraft, those are indeed some works of art. I love your approach. You could do some sort of geometric lines, and leave the blade with just a wash. Your work is really amazing because there will never be a small batch of Opinels that will be exactly like these. Great work and thanks for sharing. Also, although I do not think it would be good on this batch of your knives, I wonder if you have put any pocket clips on one?
Hey Mick, the pocketclip is actually a great idea! Never done that but maybe will give it a try!
I was curious about the paste too.
People say that it's mustard.
does the staining with mustard work on the opinel inox blades too?
no not really
@@bushcraftonbike687 tnx for the feedback :)
Made a right mess of them pal
Must have been a slow day at the office.
Very good, but why the gloves?
How to remove the black paintings on the blade if i wanted to after sometimes ??????
Technically its not a painting but an itching as far as I know. And you can NOT really remove it, but it will fade away though, especially when you cut sour fruit like apple or lemons for example, because the acid will also change the colour of the blade.
@@bushcraftonbike687 thank you for your reply....i did remove it with sand paper 1200 .and water ...it took long time and it didnt go completly....then i tried to polish it with compound ...and polish....it looks great now ...thanks again
Only oil on oil stone, leaves rust embedded into stone!am-I-rite?
Sono lame tutte inox?
Name of first song?
Handles look rough as !
