Huawei Mate 60 Pro Hands-On: The Phone That Escalates US/China Tension

  • The Huawei Mate 60 Pro is a very controversial and important phone, because it's more than just a phone. It's currently the center of a US/China geopolitical beef right now. Basically, this phone came out of nowhere to run on Huawei's own SoC, an act that the US government thought was not possible. But beyond the drama, this phone has a really damn good camera too -- of course I tried it out.
And also, does this phone support 5G networks? I think it does.
Thanks to Trinity Electronics for loaning me the phone. Trinity sells the Mate 60 Pro and ships to many parts of the world. / trinityelectronic

I found tech review telling it is 5 nm, with or without 5G functions.

Huawei doing 5G better than the west and US decides to cease their operations just goes to shows how fast Huawei's innovations are compared to even the west. And shows how better Chinese are at innovating and reverse engineering.
Outside of that, I do think Huawei has better connectivity than even Samsung, Apple, Google and some Chinese brands. Going back to my hometown or some rural areas I do noticed how good reception is with Huawei than others since I can still get some receptions while others are dead.
As for this phone, somehow the triple camera punch hole still looks cleaner than the iPhone 14 Pro's dynamic island. It's actually my favourite design choices of this phone.

It's all about how much R&D one company wants to put in. The more, the better (more signal reception capability). China has cost advantage, compared to western countries; plus, the market expectation (China AND BRICS+ AND BRI countries) is larger, thus, able to sell more, thus Return on Investment is easier than their western counterparts.

Good video especially the explanation. Good summary.
Mine came yesterday. First impressions pretty interesting design. The camera seems to be on par with P60 Pro and maybe even the Mate 50 Pro. Just the telephoto is better than the Mate 50 Pro and the main better than Mate 50 Pro and P60 Pro as they fixed the AF with wide open aperture. I also like the straightend up display and the round edges of the phone. And my black version is using metal and vegan leather. Very unique and different from the slab phones of others.
I also like the 5G support that works fine here in Germany as well.

This is no pro-China, pro-US comment, just a tech enthusiast. It's despicable though, that politicians although dividing people through warmongering and forever wars have now brought the hurt to people in civilian daily life and technology. I've never envisaged this. I'm ok with competition, fair competition, but by getting to work and creating the better product and let the consumer decide. If we're taking this political rivalry across many different sectors then it crushes my optimism for a safe, peaceful future.

However, one major talking point about this phone that you failed to mention is the satellite call function. No doubt, you probably can't use it outside of China, but it's the 1st phone to have such a function.
Also, so glad Huawei is making a comeback. Samsung has been getting lazy on top of the android world without Huawei challenging them. On the other hand, it seems Huawei is totally doing away with google. So even with Huawei back in the game, Samsung is still not being challenged. Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo will have to work harder to achieve that.
