Minolta fan since the 80s I shot x-700 from the 80s to 2020 when I finally upgraded to a AF Minolta alpha 9. The x-700 has never needed any repairs after thousands of trail and frozen mountain miles it's a fantastic camera. The Minolta alpha 9 is a camera that sits on top of the AF camera mountain top at the pinnacle of 35mm technology.
My workhorse early 2000s SLR is my Canon Rebel Ti - it’s dead simple to use and very capable. I’ve got a whole arsenal of Rebels and Elans at the ready in case the Ti meets its demise.
I love Minolta camera's. My Minolta maxxum 9 recently passed away after accidentally jumping off a bridge during a film change. I checked online for another body on ebay but it was way too expensive. Then i decided to pick up an 800si/807si for £98 with the battery grip from ebay. Im excited for its arrival.
Oh that sucks! I've had a camera leap from my hand and fall down an abandoned grain silo! But the 800si is a solid performer! I do want to add a 600si Classic to my collection! Thanks for watching!
Maxxum 70 and Maxxum 5 are probably both better than most people realize, I have both now and still not sure which I like better. Also I'd forgotten that these newer Maxxums can use SSM lenses (as they're generally called in the US, never heard them called SSW but same thing I think) and the 70 can use the DMF Direct Manual Focus lenses. By the way the 5 is even a little smaller and lighter than the 70 but the 70 does have a nicer grip... Also I agree that the 28-100 is physically and optically a bit sketchy, too bad since the zoom range is great; the old Sony and Minolta 18-70 DSLR kit zoom was similar, great range but not great optically. Good general review here, thanks.
Be a little careful with the Maxxum 5 bodies as some of the viewfinders can turn blue over time. David Hancock has some good tips on the 5, he also mentions the Japanese model, the Alpha Sweet ii, has better internal light baffling. Might be worth importing one, don't know.
I use old 70s Nikons when I want fully mechanical cameras, and late Minolta cameras for quick shooting with film (since that was what I started with). Now I really want this one :)
the Minolta alpha 9 is my favorite SLR of all time. it just packs in all the features of all the previous cameras made all into one. the 1/12000 shutter makes to so easy to shoot high ISO film during the day. only bad thing about the camera is that very few camera shops actually maintenance these bodies anymore but one good body will last forever if you take care of it.
A lot of people give the last couple generations of the film Maxxums guff, but they were still pretty solid cameras, regardless of whatever financial troubles Konica Minolta inflicted upon itself. It's a shame that Sony killed off the A-Mount. For me the only Maxxum I liked more than the 70 was the 7000i that introduced me to the Maxxum family. It was my first SLR.
I was a manual focus Minolta guy from back in the day… but didn’t jump on the Maxxum wagon. Recently I picked up a 7000i and a 5xi… and man… they are a lot of fun! They came with a 28-80 that looks like it’s built pretty well and a 50 1.7.
My minolta alpha 7 just broke and I am so sad. I saw a used Maxxum 70 on Mercari for 30 bucks and bought it. I got a brand new copy!! It's just weird to use since I am used to the alpha 9 but it's still good. Thanks for reviewing this camera. :)
@@francisamor6276 I would not say it’s a replacement for either. As a toss around body it’s a good choice. But it isn’t the same level of build, focusing and metering.
@@francisamor6276 This one is just an everyday camera. I like the focusing points in a-7 and a-9 where you can choose it. I'm still trying to figure out this camera. It feels plasticky but nonetheless with my minolta glass it will still produce good photos!
I love your Minolta videos. I am recent owner of 7000i and 7xi. Later will try to get some later models that came in late 90s and in early 2000s. It would be awesome if you could continue reviewing Minolta cameras later in the future.
I have two of these. One I bought really cheap heavily used and I noticed it would randomly shut off sometimes after taking a shot. Also, I have to turn it on and off a few times for it to stay on. I really liked the camera so I bought a brand new one that had never been opened and it does the same thing. Does anyone else notice this with their Minolta Maxxum 70? I love the camera but fighting with it to stay on is annoying. When I switch it on, whatever mode, it makes the sounds like it's trying to turn on but fails. So I switch it back off and try it several times. It always takes at least 3 or 4 tries to get it to actually turn on. After it's on, there's like 50 percent chance it will shut off automatically after one shot. It takes GREAT shots and everything else works.
Love this! I love Minolta but will have to go with the Canon Rebel K2 which of course I got for free from my Mom :) :) It's super cheap though if buying and a great camera that takes canon ef lenses! What is the Frugal Film Project btw?
The Frugal Film Project is where you shoot a camera that cost at most 75$ one roll of film a month for the year. Cheap film. Ah yes I’ve heard excellent things about the Rebel line! I have an EOS 650 and a 3000 enroute! Thanks for watching 🍻

Is there any reason why this camera does not accept external flash other than Minolta? I bought a flash hot shoe converter (from Sony to Nikon, same pin arrangement contacting the camera’s hot shoe) and it did not trigger the Nikon sb-700 , always it tries to open the flash bay ( you hear the click) and since SB-700 is sitting on it , it does not open then it gives the cancel flash icon on the screen. Is it the settings , something I am missing there , or it does not accept other than Minolta flashes period?
@@photozen8398 Ah! You did not mention the adapter in your initial comment (I work IT as my main job, I assume nothing, and want all the information.) I did some reading online and found that while you can use an adapter there aren’t good reviews. I recommend that you get a dedicated Minolta flash. They aren’t that expensive.

I found a 3000i at a thrift store. It's quite limited, a weird blend of SLR and point-and-shoot. It came with a great 50mm f1.7 lens, though.

The hotshoe is a different shape, so it won’t accept a standard shoed flash.
