Back in May, I was approached by AstrHori to review their latest accessory meter, the XH-2. While not much has changed internally from their initial offering, the AH-M1 and the XH-2 take a radically different form factor. I was not one to turn down a good opportunity to try a new product, but I was sent one, and the results were amazing! This is a great option for anyone looking for a small, ac...

If there is one thing I did not have on my 2023 bingo card, it is a new colour film, especially one from Harman Technologies. Phoenix 200 is a brand-new mid-speed C-41 process film made right in the UK at the same factory that produces Ilford B&W films. While it's not perfect, it's an amazing start to what I hope will be something even better in the future.

Hi great video, I've owned my 50e a couple of years now and love using it. I have the battery grip attached most of the time. I use rechargeable batteries. There is a learning curve with 50e. The eye focus works fine for me, and I'm a glasses wearer, I did plenty of calibration, so my 50e knows my eyes accurately and easily. I don't agree with your closing comments I have no problems with my 50e, I'm gentle with all my film cameras, the eye assist focusing and depth of field (which you didn't mention) assist I find superb, it's best to calibrate a few times to train the system to accurately 'see' your eyes. Of course others may differ in their views of the 50E and that's fine. But I'm one happy user of the Canon 50E/Elan. Many thanks for this video Regards Rob (UK)

Congratulations - highly appreciative of your content and effort used to produce it. I started in film around 1985 with a neighbor passing on a medium format Kodak box camera. Then 1986 to 1999ish 35mm, 5x4 in 2010's - digital 2000's until now and back to film in 2023 with a project buying and using film cameras from 1900-197x responsible for taking old family photos. I made a few experiments with 510 but got very dense negatives with the times mentionend in the data sheet (i tried different films). So after just 2 sessions i left 510 pyro, back to Rodinal and then right now i develop tons of negatives with Atomal 49 1+1 and 1+2. I didnt print them yet, but so far i´m very happy with Atomal49. Great stuff in my opinion. Very compensating, very good for pushing. You definetely get more speed out of films then with Rodinal, i guess full Box speed. I pushed HP-5 to 3200 and it looks fantastic! Though i have to say, that one roll of the 510 negatives looks super dreamy and otherworldy (hp-5 in 1+100). For conclusion: i still love Rodinal ^^ 1+50 is great and i will def. try 1+100 (not stand developed!) for Rodinal glow.

There is no grand cosmic scale at which your personal work becomes objectively, universally significant. On this planet reside billions of people who have never heard the names Robert Capa, Robert Frank, Saul Leiter, Sergio Larrain... Pursue universality and you'll only arrive at disappointment. Maybe I should give it a try in 120 format, and go with less over-exposure and normal development (I started to use pull development to control contrast with my pinhole shots and the contrast increase of the reciprocity error). I've been shooting this film (135) for about a year - but I have to say it is not my favorite film. The negatives always come out thin - no matter what developer I use - be it HC110, FX39, Rodinal, ID11, D76, Ilfotec HC, Pyro 510. The film is properly exposed so that is not the problem. The other issue I have with this film is the polyester base as it curls pretty badly even though ADOX says it has an anti curling layer. The same issue I find with Rollei 80s. I am not a fan of polyester bases and it also attracts dust. I definitely preferred their Silvermax film when they were still producing it. I'll stick with FP4+, Delta 100 and Rollei RPX 100 which alway give fantastic results.

Yes the curl is stronger in the 35mm over the 120 but still present. I also had thin negatives which is why I started the slight over exposure shooting at 80 then developed normally, got back more density. But the films you’re shooting are bulletproof! Thanks for watching 🍻

According to the repair-manual, there are no less than 4 versions of "The Black Beauty" : First version had a microprism focusing-screen. Version 2 and later, had a split image/microprism focusing screen, and changes to the electronics. The service-manual describes how to update the electronics, so EF cameras that have been serviced may also have been updated... Personally, I like Canons breech lock system, it's A LOT better than M42 screw mount. BTW: If you have an EF with apparently dead light-meter, check that the little exposure-lock button moves freely. On the last one I bought, a version 1, the meter didn’t work, so I was a bit disappointed initially, as the shutter-priority mode doesn't work without a functioning meter. On closer inspection, I noticed the exposure-lock button was stuck in the "lock" position, due to "finger-grease" etc. A drop of isopropanol, and a gentle massage, freed the button and the lightmeter worked perfectly fine again...

@@AlexLuyckxPhotoNeither did I before watching your video, the one I had (still have it) was with split-image/microprism focusing screen, so, being a camera-collector, I knew I had to find the service-manual.. The one I found was full of handwritten comments, so the source is probably a working Canon-repairman. Another issue is that there's at least one capacitor in the circuit, and although early 1970's Japanese capacitors are high-quality, they don't last forever. The values can drift, or they simply die. So, an EF with nonfunctioning electronics could be caused by just that one component..

Where can we get the adox chemistry in Toronto? I have an adox film stock (ISO 25, I think) on my fridge for two or three years now and never shoot it because of the chemistry which at this time has eluded me.

IME - a terrible film, at least in 35mm. Incredibly (and I mean incredibly) grainy both in D76 1+1 and in HC110 1+47. Also a 50 EI film in my workflow. I can get the same grain, and tonality with Kentmere 400, which is a 320 EI film in my chain. Kentmere 100, Foma 100 are much finer grain 100 ISO films than the Adox. I love Adox' commitment to film photography, but unless the 120 CHS II is really different from the 35mm, I have to say buyer beware. I personally won't be buying any.

That’s fair! And one of the best parts about film and photography is that personal preference is everything! And I totally agree with too much grain in 35mm with D-76 and HC-110/Ilfotec HC. And Kentmere and Foma 100 are both amazing films! Thanks for watching and sharing 🍻

The original Adox films were my late Dad’s favourites in the 1960’s and he always developed in Beutler formula, as a single bath, which is easy to make at home. It gives good sharpness and tonal range.

@@AlexLuyckxPhoto I am not a fan either, but it all brings into question if Adox really manufacture any of their films or just buy up frozen stuff and rebrands them until they run out. The list of their discountinued films is very long. Myself, I have come to rely on Ilford, Kodak or even Rollei.

I loved Efke 100 and 50. Souping it in Rodinal in medium format 1:65 gave amazing tones. The extended green sensitivity makes it excellent for woodlands and portraiture. When Adox CHS II is back in stock, I'll certainly pick some up.

I haven't shot any CHS 100 II, yet, but I have a good stash of EFKE 25 (35mm) in the freezer that I bought from a dealer in Croatia shortly after the plant shutdown. I think the reason for water stop bath, and alkaline fixer with 510 pyro is to prevent the stain from washing out. The stain helps to retain highlight detail.
