indeed, antics was a good album, as was "a weekend in the city". Just noting that everything these bands put out is consistently compared to their initial breakout releases (Silent Alarms and Turn on the Bright Lights).
i absolutely loved silent alarm, i was just getting into indie and heavy into british music and it defined me for like a year. their second album while it was considered meh at the time, looking back i actually really dig it. i see why it was criticized but its a solid second album. third album at first listen was so cool, back to fast hard and tight but with a weird electronic twist, and then i realized like 2 weeks later i wasnt listening to it anymore. i never gave 4 a chance, which is sad to me. i think bloc parties weird problem is like... they know theyre good and they see some weird alternate future where they could still be around and relevant 15 years later like radiohead or flaming lips or some shit. however, because they "know" their future they try to skip ahead and make the music the bloc party of 15 years from now is making instead of letting their current music get their on its own. and it sounds like once again this is their same problem. i guess ill give it a try.
I thought V.A.L.I.S was a great track. Honestly Four was probably their best album since Silent Alarm, I wish they had stuck with the sound they had on this album because their new single is shit.
Matthew Forbes I’d rather have bands experiment and suck than sticking to a sound and be boring. The thing is that you don’t know if the band is gonna do well sticking to their sound, so might as well experiment. An example of this are The Fratellis and Catfish and the Bottlemen, people loathe them because their music sounds the same to their first releases and well you also have bands like AC/DC, Motörhead and Slayer that never changed their sound much which to me all their music unappealing
it was difficult talking about this album for less than 10 minutes just because to explain it accurately is to describe the separate little nooks and crannies that exist within it.
Great review. I think bloc party are absolutely amazing, ignoring any integrity. They have created some of the most personally adaptive music I've ever come across. I don't care where they take me I'm already a part of their journey and will never leave. No matter what happens ill always have silent alarm, it is eternal.
so true, bloc party forever! we should get a classic week sometime on silent alarm. i felt like id been living under a rock, i loved helicopter but never checked out the full album and its so damn good. literally was listening to bloc party's new album before ever hearing silent alarm lmfao
Thanks for being nice to that mean guy. It's always great to be nice in the face of nastiness. Anyway, not much of a Green Day fan these days, honestly. I don't think I'll be covering their new singles or album. It's just not something I feel is relevant to the channel. I know you may disagree, but I have to personally guide where I think things need to go, ya know? Make calls and all that.
I feel about this like every other bloc party album. It has some songs that really do nothing for me and then some songs that blow my mind and make me think how the hell did they come up with this this is genius.
I've only ever listened to Helicopter, which is one of my top played tracks on my ipod. I think its time I give these guys a listen, I more or less owe that to them.
Thanks Anthony. Thanks Cal. What did I think? Honestly, what I thought as I selected and then returned the album to the shelf at Amoeba today was 'Let's see what theneedledrop has to say about it on that days-old video sitting in my inbox'. Also, enjoyed the wonky/glitchy screen over by Cal
If there's something really powerful about Bloc Party, its their first songs. Like Eating Glass, Song for Clay, Ares and here So He Begins to Lie are A-MA-ZING.
After listening to four a LOT more times. It's actually really amazing. It takes a some getting used to but with tracks like Truth, Day Four, Octopus, V.A.L.I.S, Mean and Real Talk, it's awesome as hell. But there are some tracks that are a bit of a miss. Coliseum and We are not good people are not great. Still a great album. Not as good as Silent Alarm and A Weekend in the City but fucking brilliant
I've been a huge BP fan for years - you've completely hit the nail on the head with the review mate, especially the first half about the history of the band, I think their journey is so unique. Only thing I'd disagree with is your bit about Coliseum, from what I can gather, it's sort of an anti-bloodsport song so they're trying to musically emulate the chaos of a fight (again, experimenting like you said). That's my thought anyway, your review is brilliant, definite like and subscribe :)
Hey,Anthony, huge fan, agree, strongly agree.Do you think this is Bloc Party's best Album since their Debut? Although it's been out there for awhile you could do a track review of "Runaways" from The Killers, new upcoming album, any predicitons for that band, who are also returning from a hiatus.Look forward to you reviewing that album,if you should choose to do so, when it drops next month.
Not gonna lie, I've been a Bloc Party fanboy since like, 2007/2008-ish, so when I heard that "Four" had finally dropped, I pretty much pissed myself. I thought it was a great album; while it's not coherent as a whole, I never really thought of their albums as "whole beings" to begin with, which is why I sort of didn't care about it. I felt like they took the best ideas and concepts from their previous albums, and put it all together to make "Four", so I guess you can say I agree with this video.
I've liked all their albums pretty much equally. I haven't picked this one up yet though. I find that every album has about three or four real stand-out songs and then a lot of consistent decent songs.
I saw them live a week or two before the LP came out. Honestly, it REALLY sold me on this thing. They played a lot of songs from it, and even opened up with two songs (3x3 and Kettling) from it. Seeing it live really does a lot for the album's integrity. You can tell they're really proud of this, even if they did decide that Colosseum is a good song. It's not, but hey. They tried.
Great review. Personally I think they haven't made any perfect album and the high points of each are all as high as each other. Their best live highlights are Flux, This Modern Love, Song For Clay/Banquet and their best studio moments for me are Ratchet, Banquet, Helicopter, I Still Remember & Real Talk. French Exit is really cool as is 3x3, The Truth and - to be honest - loads of other tracks. They really are an amazing act but I don't agree that Silent Alarm tops the other albums - it was just first. If 'Four' had come first, it would have made just as much impact, if not more ...
Thank you for reviewing Four! The review did not at all disappoint as usual. Thank you also praising the group's constant desire for evolution. Too many reviewers are stuck in the Silent Alarm does.
I remember Pearl Jam had that problem with the album Ten. Man, when that was released, it just took off and took on a life of its own. It was superb. And I remember at college in my freshman year everyone in my dorm saying, "There's no way they can top Ten. So I am not even going to buy the next album." Well, too bad for them they didn't because the next album (Vs.) kicked some major ass. So sometimes I think music fans can get in that mode where they just assume the debut album can't be topped.
I had the exact same "I like this"-> "This is suspect" - > "Yeah...yeah!" Progression. I think it's 3x3 that got me back to equilibrium, great sense of urgency in Keles vocals. Octopus was a disappointmen; just underwhelmed by the nursery-rhyme quality of the melody. I've been sitting on MNDR for a week and the initial attraction is gone. Just playing 3 tracks and neglecting the rest. I would still be interested to see what you thought of that one.
Since you're on the subject of London-based rock bands, would you mind turning an ear to the recent debut release from Spector? Enjoy It While It Lasts is getting quite a lot of hype at the moment in the UK, with Spector being seen as "the new Vaccines". I've just come back from seeing Spector at Reading festival and thought they were really good, but yet to buy their record.
very good review! i share your opinion for the most parts, except some riffs in "kettling" are just too much 90s for me. i am just thankful they went off the way intimacy seemed to lead.
Came here as soon as I got to Kettling. Had to hear your thoughts. That track took me by surprise, and yeah, the album doesn't feel crazy unified...but it's somehow working...
silent alarm will always hold a special place in my heart. while i don't think four was equally good, it was great to hear something substantial from them. i thought it was a great album.
I'll definitely check this out. I was hesitant before seeing this review, as I was left wanting a lot more from both Weekend In The City and Intimacy, but knowing that there's some rather enjoyable moments on here is comforting.
Great review, really enjoyed it. Gave me a lot to think about. I really did enjoy the album. I mean as one of those desperate fans who just wanted them to pump out more music after the hiatus I was really impressed. It was new music but it felt like their older stuff at the same time? If you haven't you should really check the bonus songs "Mean" and "Leaf Skeleton". "Mean" had a similar feel to "Letter to my son" which I really enjoyed. All in all I think it was a 9/10 for me.

Cohesiveness is fine too but for me it doesn't aplly wheter I'll enjoy a LP more because of it. I somewhat expected the album to sound this way, but still hoped there will be a track or two that'll sound like one from Silent Alarm, which is my favourite,

Wow, I'm glad I listened to your whole review. The way its began I was expecting 10 minutes of hate. I've only listened to this album twice, but I really enjoy it so far, and think I'll keep getting more out of the songs with repeats. Def got a Foo Fighters vibe out of some of the songs, and a little bit of Elbow. Yeah, there isn't much to hang your hat on, as an album; but it feels like "Bloc Party is back" is the tagline here. (A year ago, I thought these guys were gone for good)
I LOVE octopus, day four, V.A.L.I.S, team a and real talk but i really hate 3X3. But i bought the delux edition and the two bonus song are really good two. Could you review Toko Police Clubs new album when it comes out next year?

nice touch with "Turn on the Bright Lights" in the background. Another band haunted by it's debut release.
