I'm heading over to Kathmandu in the next week to help out with the disaster and this video was very helpful, thanks. Just a tip though, if we could see your mouth while you say the words it would help with pronunciation, but still a good intro to Nepali. :)
Don't be offended! You are going to do the missionaries work there ? I hope, In exchange of your help to those needy people , you are not going to convert them into Chritianity. Service for the sake of service but, not for getting something in return makes it selfless divine cause. If you are going to work there with this ideal, than my hats off to you.
I work with a lot of nepali people and love to be able to speak a few words in their native tongue. They teach me a lot but this video is also super helpful! Though different regions definitely have different dialects. So I'll make sure to combine the two!
This is so helpful for me because I've been learning Nepali from a book alone and pronouncing is difficult to guess and this helped so much, thank you!
0:51 Good night. - Shubha raatri. 1:03 (casual) How are you? - Ke chha? 1:15 I am fine. - Tthik chha. 1:17 And you? - Timi laai? 1:31 (formal) How are you? Thank you :) It has been good to learn some basic phrases without all the time it takes to start at the beginning and learn to read and all of that :) I would still like to do that, but this quick track has been helpful.
Dhanya Baad, malaai man paryo, dherai raamro - I'm finding it useful and helpful. It's making my life better. Maaph garnus but your link doesn't work, pacchi bhetau laa :-)
Thank you. the most helpful thing is to hear how the written Roman (?) script corresponds to the pronunciation. The difference been "aa" and "a". Great. Thank you so much.
Lesson is pretty good. Words and phrases you use here are very helpful. Hope to learn a bit more before my travels!!! I usually learn quicker if there are objects or songs in relation to the new vocabulary but better than nothing.
You might take a look at your link, as at does not work. I would like to learn more from you as your the only one who speaks clearly and understandable. Please make more videos. thank you.
It's kinda weird that I'm here coz I'm a nepali myself and I'm from India. I'm surprised that it is quite different when it comes to speaking nepali in India than in Nepal... But I'm glad I watched it and got to learn the correct phrases..
Some things are similar to Hindi, while others are totally different. Do people in Nepal sometimes also say 'Ram Ram' instead of 'Namaste' ? It is a very beautiful sounding language by the way.
Thanks for complement of the language. The term 'Ram Ram' comes from Hindu god Ram and few people use it greet others in Nepal as well but it definitely is not as common as in India. When meeting someone usually its just as saying "Namaste" for Hi or Hello and "Sanchai chau or hunuhuncha or chas" for You all right? in English.
Gewaldro at western nepal ram ram can be used instead of namaste. however, at eastern nepal it is used with different meaning. e.g. ram ram u maryo/ bityo = alas! he is dead
Namaste! And thank you for this excellent overview for the basic phrases. I have two important questions on phrases that I found hard to find. How do I say: "I speak very little Nepali"? or answer to that question (Nepali bolnu hunchha?) in an understating and polite way of saying "only little"? And second: How would I politely express my disinterest in an offer? Like if being offered something to buy, to stay in a lodge, etc. - is there a way to politely say "no"? Thank you very much for answers! Namaste and all the best.
PS: Heading to Nepal for the second time next week. I cannot wait to be back there again. It is by far the most fascinating place I have been. Last year, I went for 5 weeks and aimed to learn one phrase a day. I cannot tell you how much positive response I got even for my lame Nepali. People appreciated even my very simple trying with gratitude, which made me feel great and welcome. Dhanyabaad, Nepali people. Pheri Bhetaula!
"I speak very little Nepali" means: (Ma Nepali ali~ali bolchhu.) If you want to be more polite, you can say, "Hajoor, ali~ali bolchhu" Or you can reply to the question, "Nepali bolnu hunchha?" like "Ali~ali matrai" which means "only little" And the polite way to say "no" to an offer is, "Pardaina, Dhanya~baad" better with a smile. Its like "No, thanks"
What are the differences with the two phrases, (I am fine) Tthik chaa and Sanchai chhu. So as "And you," Tim ilaai versus Tapaai laai? Please kindly explain! with much thanks:)
Speaking any language well generally takes dedication, as in spending a decent amount of time every single day, for months or years. Even after studying, for most people it is difficult at first to converse because you tend to be slow, translating in your head between your native language and the new one, and this usually only improves from having lots of conversations. Then learning to read and write nepali will require learning a new alphabet, which adds difficulty. Learning a new language is always easier when you live in a place where you practice it daily.
Good start but sort the background and make it look as if a little more effort went into the planning. Been able to see your mouth during the pronunciation would be very useful also. Mount you sheets of paper or laminate them would also be worth considering. Keep up the good work.

It is a fun language to learn. And it opens doors in Nepal where everyone will greet you friendly as a guest and the more they will let you know how much they appreciate even little phrases or words in Nepali. I think it shows respect to do so and it will open those friendly peoples hearts even more.
No need to learn Nepali language because all Nepalis understand sign language. In Malaysia, MOST of the Nepali security guards can't speak or understand English or Malay yet the government employs them. They get by with sign language. Better for the Malaysian government to employ Malaysian hearing impaired people as security guards who will do a better job than those Nepali drunkards.
Your love is as comfortable(?) as the moon Sital means something along the lines of comfortable, cool or relaxing, can't really find an exact translation for it
We do not use Namaste to say Good Morning or Good Evening. Good Morning = Subha Prabhat / Subha Bihani Good Night = Subha Ratri Namaste is just a greeting like Hello used mainly if you're addressing someone elder than you. You can use it as greeting even if the person is younger than you. But it's just a greeting and nothing else.
very helpful... I need a sentence translated man..."I do not speak Nepali, that is all I know how to say, and this sentence explaining it." can you translate that?

how long will it take to speak fluent nepali and how to get there the quickest

Can someone please tell me why for good night some say shubha raatri and some say suva raatri??
This is how शुभ is written in Nepali. Shubha or shuvha should be both OK and meaning the same.
Hi. Is anyone know what 'sikayo' means? Hope anyone can help me with that. Thanks!
+Julia Johari Sure Sikayo means like " Someone taught you".
For example
He taught me would be usle malai Sikayo.
sikayo means finish or Done
wrong
Julia Johari there's two meanings. Either finished or taught
Sikayo just means taught ( to teach ).
Finish ( to finish ) is sakiyo.
And good evening is (शुभ सन्ध्या)" subha sandhya"
Thank you so much. God bless you.
