At the time, we all noticed the obvious gameplay glitches and issues, but it was a largely successful transition to 3D considering. It definitely got more leeway since it was Sonic's first meaty 3D outing. 3D Blast (Genesis) was just...weird and un-fun.

That Knuckles section was really sad, the walkthrough wasn't descriptive because the Emerald Pieces are literally random and they are not in the same 3 places every time.
First time I watched them play, I couldn't figure out why they were getting so salty about the walkthrough. Like, it took me a bit to realize that they didnt realize it was randomized. XP

Gamma’s story, despite how much people clown the game, was actually pretty emotional. It’s still one of my favorites when I played the game! The scene of the explosion and the bird flying away still sticks with me
They're not randomized: the locations the shards can appear at are preset, but there are multiple options for different configurations. Which configuration you get on any turn is random, but the actual locations themselves aren't random. Speedrunners who train on this game can get the Knuckles levels down in around a minute each since they know where to look.

It's like if you wanted to know what the top card of a deck was, and one person told you "I don't know, it's some card or other" while another told you "It's either the king of spades, the ace of hearts, or the 3 of diamonds." Even if you still don't know which specific card it is, the latter is still more helpful.
Whether it's the options or the configuration that you can't predict, if what you get is purely by luck and chance, then it's random. Ok, sure, maybe not COMPLETELY random, but only as much as knowing that when you roll a six-sided die you'll get a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6.

The best they can do is embrace the culture that has grown around Arin's comments, which, although negative, are made in good fun. The Sonic Adventure duology is practically screaming to be remade. These were very ambitious games, but they were hampered by the limitations of the hardware and muddled by the developers' excitement at throwing in all these different gameplay styles. With a graphical upgrade and more focused design, this game could be really fun. As it is, it's a product of its time - uneven and a little glitchy, but there are times when it achieves its potential, and those parts of it hold up pretty well. Adventure crawled so Colors and Generations could walk. But I appreciate what it was trying to do, and in its best moments, that does shine through.
Man i love both sonic adventures. Their soundtracks were FUCKING awesome. DX's themes for characters were alot better. Not all of em however. Its a 50 50 split of the 2 games on how good the music was. As far as gameplay wise... Chao Garden. All im sayin

Even other games with glitches of other IPs generally are polished to the point of them being activated on command (like the Mario 64 door skips). This though? Arin isn't doing anything to activate the glitches. His Emerald Coast fall is not on-command, it's a result of crap programming.

At the time, we all noticed the obvious gameplay glitches and issues, but it was a largely successful transition to 3D considering. It definitely got more leeway since it was Sonic's first meaty 3D outing. 3D Blast (Genesis) was just...weird and un-fun.

That Knuckles section was really sad, the walkthrough wasn't descriptive because the Emerald Pieces are literally random and they are not in the same 3 places every time.
First time I watched them play, I couldn't figure out why they were getting so salty about the walkthrough. Like, it took me a bit to realize that they didnt realize it was randomized. XP

I wonder if they ever figured out that Knuckles’ levels are randomized and that’s why the walkthroughs are unhelpful.
They're not randomized: the locations the shards can appear at are preset, but there are multiple options for different configurations. Which configuration you get on any turn is random, but the actual locations themselves aren't random. Speedrunners who train on this game can get the Knuckles levels down in around a minute each since they know where to look.

It's like if you wanted to know what the top card of a deck was, and one person told you "I don't know, it's some card or other" while another told you "It's either the king of spades, the ace of hearts, or the 3 of diamonds." Even if you still don't know which specific card it is, the latter is still more helpful.
Whether it's the options or the configuration that you can't predict, if what you get is purely by luck and chance, then it's random. Ok, sure, maybe not COMPLETELY random, but only as much as knowing that when you roll a six-sided die you'll get a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6.

I'm not sure what you're disputing here. It's just a simple fact that there was information the walkthrough could have given them that it didn't. How you evaluate that is up to you-you can call it a bad walkthrough, an ok one, a good one, or whatever-but you can't dispute that it was less helpful than it could have been. That's all I'm saying.

The best they can do is embrace the culture that has grown around Arin's comments, which, although negative, are made in good fun. If anything, Sonic fans with negative opinions on Arin (or any people who criticize Sonic) might serve well to follow SEGA's example. Negativity should not be met with more negativity.

The Sonic Adventure duology is practically screaming to be remade. These were very ambitious games, but they were hampered by the limitations of the hardware and muddled by the developers' excitement at throwing in all these different gameplay styles. With a graphical upgrade and more focused design, this game could be really fun.
As it is, it's a product of its time - uneven and a little glitchy, but there are times when it achieves its potential, and those parts of it hold up pretty well. Adventure crawled so Colors and Generations could walk. But I appreciate what it was trying to do, and in its best moments, that does shine through.
I think that would make the story and voice acting stick out more

True, Mario had many glitches, but most of those were on-command, so you could have a no glitch run if you wanted. Even other games with glitches of other IPs generally are polished to the point of them being activated on command (like the Mario 64 door skips).
This though? Arin isn't doing anything to activate the glitches. His Emerald Coast fall is not on-command, it's a result of crap programming.
thedabcrab 3 thedabcrab 3 I played this game on a Dreamcast when I was 11, it wasn’t when the game was first released but it was the original version and an original Dreamcast, my parents got it for me from a retro video game store, like I said the game was glitchy as shit, it even changed from English to Japanese dialogue without any warning midway through the story mode for no reason, I played the game a lot to but I can look past nostalgia and tell you with certainty that it was a janky ass game
