Kornelia Ender (born 25 October 1958) is a former East German swimmer who at the 1976 Summer Olympics became the first woman swimmer to win four gold medals at a single Olympic Games, all in world record times.

I remember her from these games... I knew without question Ender was on steroids, her back was bigger than all the male swimmer. Renate Stecher on the track was another.. just huge she was.
All these people just criticize and attack. I would like to hear a more informed and knowledgeable perspective on the GDR athletes. What exactly was the impact of the doping? Why were some GDR athletes notably better than their teammates? Isn't doping for stamina? It makes no difference on technique, discipline, diet, natural talent, competitive temperament, etc.
Well when you have Stasi files that show Renate Stecher asked to come off the steroids because she was soon to be planning a family and wanted to have “normal children “ you know there is a huge problem. Australian sprinter Raelene Boyle was robbed.
No shit! Anyone else would show a bit of remorse for what have happened. The fact that Kornelia Ender still goes to sleep believing that she still deserved those Gold Medals she cheated for is beyond comprehension, especially for someone as Narrow Minded as her.

As great as Jenner was (the decathlon winner is traditionally dubbed The Greatest Athlete in the World), Comaneci literally transformed her sport. She was the very highest exemplar--she was waaaaay ahead of the other female gymnasts, & she solidified gymnastics's evolution into a sport requiring incredible skill & daring. Some of her skills are still performed today--considering how much gymnastics changes over time, that's incredible staying power. She is truly a legend within the sport.

Reading some of those comments re:decathletes being the best athletes. I've always seen it the other way around....that decathletes were actual never really good at one single event but rather just ok at every event. Therefore because they aren't good enough at one event they choose to become a decathletes. This has to be how it works....oh yeh, and back to the gorgeous kornelia ender. I love her. Some of these comments are hilarious. It is a well known fact that all of them in the swimming finals were taking some sort of performance enhancing staff, and no it wasn't just apple juice. Kornelia Enders amongst her Russian, West German and USA etc. atheletes were stuffed with it above their eyeballs and she still won ... . Actually in 1977 Kornelia Enders was banned from the GDR team because she refused to continue with the doping.
If Kornelia Ender was totally against "Doping", why did she juice up before winning those Olympic Gold Medals? And if she has at least one ounce of dignity inside of her she would give back all the 1976 Olympic Swimming Gold Medals she has cheated for.
Yes, she is happily married for the second time and already have grandkids. I wish only the best for her and her family!

What does that have to do with today... this is 1976, and a state sponsored drug program that was monitored ... Athletes taking drugs in other countries and their have been many, in the 80's and since... have been clandestine and in small groups or individuals. Not a state program.. where they are trained, fed, tested, monitored ... big difference what went on in the GDR.

I just saw the USA Olympic Swimming Trials. If people want to be IGNORANT and speculate about BODY TYPES as an indication of doping, then I must say some of the USA women look pretty muscular, tall and not necessarily all that feminine. HOWEVER, I am not that stupid or ignorant. It's not fair to the athletes to just attack and speculate.
If the GDR did something systematic, I'm convinced the USA, USSR, FRG, etc. did also.
Among Track and Field events, is The Decathalon a combination of all events? If not, how many events make The Decathalon?

Enith Brigitha was the fastest steroid-free swimmer of that era.. She didn't get the attention and appreciation she deserved because of the domination of the steroid DDR swimmers.

Re: Ender--it irritates me that she won't admit she essentially cheated, but in the end she was a victim. She had no say in the program--the Powers That Be just shot them up & nobody was allowed to ask questions. The EG athletes had SEVERE health problems--lots of women were barren & 1 of them decided to just go ahead & transition into being an all-out male. Ender's in denial but she doesn't have the same moral culpability as someone who knowingly doped. Still, they should give back the medals!

Ok, I respect all sports or events apart some exceptions. For example, golf or curling, which I do not treat seriously. Yes, I agree, Decathlon is very difficult event. But... It'd be unfair to say, that Marathon or Modern Pentathlon, which includes 5 different and very difficult events are LESS DIFFICULT or that the winning Marathon or Modern Pentathlon is LESS VALUABLE than Desathlon! I don't agree!

It was proven in 1991 that The East German Women Swimmers were given Steroids in Montreal by Their Coaches!
americans in the 80's and 90's had a doping program worst than that of east germany.

I do not agree. I think "The Greatest Athlete in Olympic Competition" perhaps can be the winner of Modern pentathlon, the sport, which combine 5 different olympic sports!

PUT SIMPLY - She was on drugs. 10% increase on performance and so makes her no better than a top club swimmer, that's all. Not a superstar at all. Same goes for all the other GDR women too.

Even without the steroids she would have been an incredible swimmer. People overestimate the effect of doping - all the drugs in the world won't take a couch potato to a medal-winner. You have to be training pretty close to your maximum load for the drugs to make a difference.
If you so like that Bruce Jenner, let him be the best at 1976 Games but only for you!!! Frankly speaking, he is not well known beyond America... I do not understand at all why do you think that winning the Decathlon is something extraordinary that must overshadow all other sports and events!???
And you could also add Tennis to that list of sports that I don't treat seriously. Like you, I also do not like to watch Golf or Curling(Which we Americans refer to as Shuffleboard). Shuffleboard(Curling) is something we would play on a Recreational Basis.
