  • In this video I reveal what I did to modify a cheap bass drum to make it more like a professional drum and discuss results. This is a longer video, so in the interest of time here are some time stamps to help you get to the parts of greater interest if you prefer:
    0:00 - Introduction
0:53 - Stock vs. Modified Comparison
    3:07 - My comparison observation
    4:50 - The modification revealed
5:10 - Reasoning behind the mod
7:29 - “Why not just EQ a stock drum?”
9:15 - Nice drums are sealed inside
    11:47 - Let’s talk about drums “pinging”
14:37 - Video purpose and recap, future videos?
This is for engineers and drummers who want to get their hands dirty, so to speak, about really digging in and learning about why drums sound the way they do. A greater understanding of this can only help their productions and careers, no?
More videos like these will follow in coming weeks and months.

Was curious about this, so I treated the inside of my old kit from 2005ish. Just did a few coats of teak oil which does t give a super hard finish but gives a soft luster. The sound improvement wasn’t immediately noticeable. Once it hardened it was much different.
Would be interesting to try different types of coatings to see what differences make.

Joel your awesome...so many things you do i would never have imagined. Although are you saying "Timbre" or "Tambre"...always made me wonder...Maybe cuz I'm Canadian.

Thanks for the kind words, Randy, much appreciated! As for the word, I grew up saying "timber" (like falling trees), but around musicians of all my adult life seems like everyone says "tamber." So I adopted that pronunciation to keep conversations with those folks on topic! :) Thanks again.

I'd be curious to hear it w/ D112 back in the normal spot after the mod, as post-mod it was clear it wasn't quite balanced right (because optimized position for unmodified)....
PS. I've definitely gotten the "ping" in 16" floor toms, including C&C quite bad. It's easy to get rid of in kicks, but in floor toms not a fast fix.

Don't have the drum anymore, unfortunately. Should have done that too, just for comparison. Will do more extensive auditioning with the PDP kit that I'll be messing with moving forward. And yes, floor toms can also 'ping,' which is why I don't really recommend polyurethane as a first choice for interior, and why I'm moving forward with the tung oil blend for the PDP kit... I want to improve the tone, but don't want to make it hard to control.
