To be honest, I think Dave had the best head in the business of what they should’ve been doing in early 85. He knew that fame and fortune could disappear in an instant no matter how good you were…if you didn’t stay out front in the fan’s minds and give them the incredible music they demanded, you’d could be history in an instant. Going low key back then, was a road to disaster even though neither choice ended up happening.
Once they split, the anger and media drama seemed to play a big role in keeping them competitive against each other and pushing to make music. Without all that, I don’t think the new Van Halen with Sammy or the new David Lee Roth Band would’ve been quite as popular or loved, though never loved as much as before 85. But still all lucky enough to continue on for a long time and to have fans for a lifetime and beyond in all they did. I feel very lucky to have been alive and able to enjoy their era. ❤

What happened with the interviews that David Lee Roth did with Lisa Robinson 1983, 1984. It was in really high quality, please consider uploading it again or perhaps you could send a copy of the audio to me :) Have a good day!

Liqour and egos killed the best and greatest American rock band, ever. So much lost time.

@@g99se9 Precisely - it was a wild ride and produced some great tunes while it lasted. Certainly nothing that will be rivalled by the boring sober bands of today who don't practice enough to play.

I would love to hear those studio tapes from '85. I think I remember Edward saying in an interview that they recorded Summer Nights with Dave, but dumped that version once Sammy joined the group. There were like 2 or 3 songs that Dave had recorded with VH before Sammy joined.
Back then I didn't appreciate the problem Edward and Alex had with alcohol. I knew they drank, but I also assumed it was Dave hogging the spotlight and lording over the other guys that broke the band up. Years later, hearing what the VH brothers said about Hagar when he left made me pause. It sounded very familiar and I know Sammy wasn't Dave. Sammy talking about Edward and Alex's addictions also rang familiar. I started coming to accept that the VH brothers weren't the greatest people in the world and were very "you or us... and we always win" about stuff. Couple that with chronic intoxication and it will drive people away after a while.
I'm glad they got back together and recorded ADKoT, but man all those years of lost music. I love the Sammy era, but ADKoT showed what VH could've done back in '85 when Roth still had a voice.

Yep, Eddie said Dave wrote the melody to Summer Nights like the chorus in Neil Young's "Down by the River," in an interview with Steve Rosen from '86. It's also likely that the music for "Good Enough" would've been used for Yankee Rose in Dave's version. Ed said Dave shied away from Dreams, which is where the "melancholy love ballad" comment from DLR comes from probably.

    • @gernblanston3363
      @gernblanston3363 3 года назад +3

Agreed fully. I came to the same realizations as you did when Hagar left the band. Btw, don't forget the cocaine which was also making its reputation known during those times. I would love to hear those tracks that they were working on in '85. They have to be buried in the vaults at 5150. It's so disappointing that DLR (basically) left the band over Eddie wanting to do more keyboard driven tracks. Considering that's exactly what DLR would get into on his second solo album "Skyscraper". There are other reasons of course, but the musical direction does seem to be one of the main factors.

I think there was a bit of new immigrant isolation/insulation that never really left the brothers. The 4 of them in the family all moved here basically not speaking a lick of English and the brothers, particularly shy little Eddie were just tossed into southern California and public school. That tends to lead people into sticking together and having no one else. It certainly can. I'm not saying it's an us vs.. them defensiveness necessarily, but that together with a natural introvert personality (and Ed might have been the biggest introvert ever, and coupled with one of the biggest extroverts ever, David Lee Roth! )makes people hunker down and only want to rely on each other. How's that for amateur psychology!?

  • @IvanLendl87

When DLR split from VH in ‘85 I, like so many, assumed Dave’s ego was the sole cause. But you look back at EVH’s behavior towards his lead singers - he would grow resentful of the attention they were getting. It would bother him that the front guy was getting so much glory when he, Eddie, the best guitarist of his generation (maybe any generation), is the biggest reason for their rock n roll greatness. Roth leaves with a hug and a cry and the next thing you know Eddie is painting him in public as the enemy. Then he did essentially the same thing to Hagar in ‘96. Then he did it again to Roth in ‘97. Then he did it again to Hagar in ‘04. He even ousted the most loyal member of the band - Michael Anthony.
And as per Ted Templeman, DLR and Hagar drugs and alcohol fueled a lot of Eddie’s sour attitude. It’s a damn shame too b/c the original VH w/DLR was as great a RnR unit as you’ll find.

It was!! Ed had some problems and yes, they used to argue alot, but that happens it Marriages, not to mention BANDS!! It just means you actually care about what you're writing and playing!! This is NOTHING against Wolf...but without Mike, it STILL wasn't Van Halen!! Yeah they added another Van Halen, but it was NOT the Original and that we came to know and love!! What it TRULY came down to, and I GUARANTEE Roth would admit this. Roths PERSONALITY was to big for the other guys in the band!! They just did not click on a personal level..thats one fact I know to be true. They didn't even hang out together after Shows!! Roth, Eddie Anderson, The two Short fellas, and the 2 Van Halen girls hung out at whatever Hotel they stayed at that nite, and u know in Chattanooga...the other 3 guys went out and played Foosball at Fantasy 2,000. A big Bar/Night Club in Chattanooga. That's the only time I was out, at the same place partying where they were, after the 4 Concerts I saw them during 80-84. And Roth had 1,000 plus people back at The Chattanooga Choo Choo with Anderson, the Chicks, and the Short dudes. Out if the 4 Concerts I saw, Diver Down wasn't least favorite. I liked Women And Children First and Fair Warning best. I saw one of them Atlantas Omni Hotel and Convention Center...now CNN. And the other at the Knoxville Coliseum. My phone is fucking misspelling EVERYTHING...and I'm having to go back and fix shit. Sorry if anything's misspelled. But the reason for the breakup is both if their faults...the other 3 guys in the band, and then Roth, Templeman, and Anderson in the other side. More if Roths fault though. That I know. He wanted to get out of that responsibility...and do a movie, write a book, write at least one recording (Album) of his own, THEN...maybe get back together...Live them all though.

That’s the same thing I was seeing. The Van Halen Bros. spent a lot of time slagging Roth and Hagar when they split and it was the same rhetoric each time. Over the years the brothers turned on wives, band mates, guitar manufacturers (the Ernie Ball story), so who really was the problem?

absolutely. Eddie did finally get sober and im sure regretted talking alot of shit about both Sammy and Dave ,but that was decades ago, surely it's forgotten.HELLO INTERNET!
Eddie jealous? My God 1 album in and he was already guitar godt -Templemen saw it for sure. Man as a fan since 78,the band losing Dave was devastating -he said it perfectly,
The chemistry -once a zeitgeist- I mean those records with Davd -particularly the first 4 are simply untouchable . Their manager should have shut downdown the smack talking
interviews. in one Eddie went on and on about how Dave would never be in the band again. Well aging isn't all bad- you gain wisdom, and Ed had to eat some crow- but he knew they
could handle any BS more maturely, not to mention - the event probably reinvigorated him and the guys -knowing damn well original VH -fans were going to lose their shit with a reunion
tour AND a really good album. The whole thing was staggeringly a worldwide success. And any dick that wants to slam Daves vocals, give the guy a break. ONE BREAK....COMING UP!

Doesn’t matter who made mistakes causing the band to split. We all make mistakes. Bands split and they were probably lucky they did it when they did. They all moved on from there and even if not always positively in the eyes of the media or with each other, they still continued to accomplish more than most including more mistakes. We all eventually learn from our mistakes, and eventually, they will all end up as the Rock Gods they strived and succeeded at being in heaven, just as Eddie is now. ☮️❤️💪

@@Mff48 I read Noel's book too and came away with the belief that Ed and Alex were good souls, but alcohol made them angry, bitter mean drunks. Especially Alex. Noel also mentioned how Alex was always envious of Ed's fame and notoriety. The two brothers would have fist fights probably over egos. Ed though was the music of VH and Alex didn't play a big role in the creative part. Alex would start in on Anthony and eventually he led the whole band into believing that Anthony played no key role. Noel mentioned that Alex really played no bigger role in the band than Anthony. They were all founding members and part of the group chemistry, but it was Dave who was the leader and Ed was always the music.

that was from an interview with Roth; and one man's opinion, although an insider's perspective, it's only his. several exaggerations in there justifying his departure.. they didn't take a year to write and record '84. the last gig for Diver Down Tour was memorial weekend of '83. '84 was released in January of '84. that's quite impressive work in 7 months.. etc. etc..

I swear...it's just totally AMAZING when you hear what one side says happened!! I mean, you listen to this, and Dave.. it just sounds like you ARE trying to make this simply ...OTHER than your fault, like 100%. The problem here, us you're saying ONE thing, when everyone line myself, who's been around VH alot during the years you were in the band. Now EVERYONE says that DLR is one way in front of the cameras, and a totally OTHER way when they're off. You have way to many people saying THIS about you, and THAT about you, and then you Have YOU saying THIS about THAT!! I've known alot of people around the band back then, and that just wasn't the facts. I know that the band liked writing and recording late in the afternoons and at night, because during Concert promotions and Tours, THAT'S the same times y'all are up doing the shows and such. It makes since. All 3 if the other guys say, and NOT just them, but alot if OTHERS, say you would Always....come in late, up to 2 or 3 hours late, then start some argument, and leave. And you WERE practicing with Steve at your house, when the guys in Van Halen were still thinking you were in the Band, then you just quit!! Period Bruh. There's not just what they say, that's just the way you acted back then!! After Concerts yall didn't hang out together either. That's just Strange. I remember when y'all came to Chattanooga one Sunday evening (Diver Down, early Nov. of 82, and I also saw y'all in 80, 81 and 84. .. Women and Children, through MCMLXXXIV. You had a big party at the Chattanooga Choo Choo after the Concert, then about 3am, went in a bike ride down MAIN STREET!! I suppose with Eddie Anderson. After 1981, everyone said you were into everything for DLR, and that's it. What was with you telling Ed you didn't want him having guitar Solos anymore after Fair Warning!! "Everybody knows you're Edward Van Halen, now you've made your point, let's move-in...no more long assed guitar Solos. Only what will fit in between the verses!!". A chick friend of mine was I e if your Girls when you were around the South.. Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville, and Atlanta. We'll just give first name..Lori . I still talk and see her too, from time to tine. Van Halen wasn't favorite Band at the time!! luckily enough...i got laid at all your Concerts too except 1982's Diver Down..because girlfriend was WITH me...Eds gone now, so don't belittle him or say they did something they truly didn't. Just be honest and move on. Please...We still Love ya Bruh...
