As an Asian, we are taught the value of filial piety. When I NB ought my house, I got my elderly parent to move in so that I can take care of them. Parent took care of us when we were young and in return, we take care of them when they are old. Not an unusual practice in Asian culture.
Basically the concept of gratitude to your parents for your upbringing and their sacrifices. Even though my parents would love to live on their own, I made them live with me so I can take more care of them and accompany them on doctors visits.
Renting is really not a culture here, so that’s one reason that helps support the culture of living with parents (besides traditional filial piety). When locals rent homes, it’s usually transitional while waiting to move into a newly purchased home or some special circumstances… we see rent as a complete waste of money. :)
It really does takes out such a large chunk of ones salary :( I dont even want to think about the amount of money I could have saved over the years haha
@@intheworldofmari here, the kids most look forward to living in university halls (hostel) if they get into a local university. It’s their perfect excuse to live independently for cheap and not have people wonder if they can’t get along with family.. haha.
Even when the children have grown up, married & moved out.. they usually move to a place close to the parents so they are always available whenever their parents need them... basic concept of filial piety. For example: my cousins visit their parents every evening after work,.to check-in on their welfare & needs ie grocery shopping, medical needs, etc.
Ice Cream Sandwich - DA BEST! I grew up on that. Saved up all the 10 cents from my school allowance just to run to the uncle when I hear the bell. It used to be 50 cents back in the day, but that 50 cents took me a whole WEEK to save up.... Asian parents - "Everything is a weapon" - flip flops, coat hangars, cooking ladles, rolled-up newspapers etc etc 😂🤣😁I know, not the same as Tiger Parenting but it's still funny (and hurts, at the time).
Haha...Ontarians love to queue to, whenever there are specials, especially on Boxing Day. Not quite as much as Singaporeans as I see on videos, but probably more than S Africa? Also, rents are very high in the major cities of Ontario and Canada. They are about the same, or even higher than in Singapore. Homes are extremely expensive too in the major cities of Ontario. I think this is generally the trend in major cities of highly developed nations. One thing Singapore 'wins' is exorbitant prices of cars!
U can buy Magnolias FnN brand ice cream with waffles biscuit (a box of 4 individually wrapped) ice cream for s$4.30 original price or s$3.80 (if under discount) from NTUC. They have Blueberry ripple, chocolate, durian or raspberry ripple favours. Place a box in your fridge freezer and u can eat 24/7. Don't need to travel to orchard road to buy.
Some neighbourhood shops also sell Magnolia ice cream wafer for $1. Literally the exact same ice cream + wafer packaged so it can be stored in the ice cream freezer. It kinda tastes not as good as the fresh one form the ice cream uncle/auntie, but the benefit is that you don't have to hunt down the ice cream uncle/auntie.
Ice cream in bread might seem weird, but there are ice cream sandwich made from ice cream and cookies as well, so it isnt that weird... :) Just what you are used to...
Ice cream and bread is not uniquely Singapore. In Italy, there is brioche con gelato. Living with parents may be a way to save money but for the Chinese, we are taught to take care of our parents. It is called filial piety (influenced by Confucian thought). Tiger parenting is due to being kiasu (a cultural trait called Kiasuism = fear of losing out) or in the west, they called it keep up with the Jones. You will also noticed that many parents take leave when it is closer to their child's exam period as if they are sitting for the exam. I grew up in Singapore but my parents are never the tiger parents. Instead I was taught to be independent and be responsible for my life. Queue tends to trigger people to queue especially for food. They seemed to think the food is good because people queue. However, I did a small test before. I asked the people who in the queue for the reason for queueing. A number of them told me that they queue because friends told them to try (but everyone's taste differ) or they think food is good. Quite often I find queue can be a hype. The food is not as good as perceived. I don't believe in queue for more than 15 mins for food.
We can't move out and away from our parents at the age of 18 in Singapore, well simply because, we can't afford a place of our own at that point of time, be it buying or renting. Unless our parents are bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg.
You are always so diplomatic in your videos! With regards to the rental, wait till you get to HK. Then, you will most definitely feel that you are living in a mansionette for equivalent rent in SG. It definitely makes more sense to live with parents in SG. Most move out only when getting married. Imagine the amount of rent saved through the years multiplied by 2 (since both will get to save right)? As for the ice-cream sandwich, that's traditional type. Did you get to try it between thin wafer biscuits? With regards to tiger parenting, most Asian parents (from SG to HK to South Korea) are like that. HK and Taiwan are also 'famous' for their cramschools!! Would be great to understand exactly which area of education sector you are in.

Back in my childhood days, we normally call those "scooped" ice cream the cheaper "made by owner / self made / 自己做的" version as compared to those commercially prepared, more "atas" ice cream blocks.
What i dont like in sg is that they differentiate people so much. At the top are the singapore citizen then the PR then workpass and at the end the work permit holders. Ask a singapore citizen how much her kids school fee is. And then ask a work pass holder how much they pay for a kid at school. Iam german and i learned all my life that we all are the same. We have anti discrimination laws in place. Everybody has the same rights. We all pay nothing for education in germany. Doesnt matter if german citizen or foreign student. We all have the same access to health care insurance or pension insurance or unemployment insurance. Ask a singaporean about his pension after working 40 years in sg and then ask a work pass holder after working 40 years in sg. Huge differences. In sg people are not the same. And thats sad.
We do not have pension but we have Central Provident Fund, Medisave and Medishield, often referred to as the 3 'Ms'. Germany's social and health policies are based on welfarism from high taxes. Singapore's are based on shared responsibility. We pay very low personal taxes too. If I am not wrong, last year only 40% of population working pay personal taxes.
