    Ok, this is going to be unpopular I'm sure ~ I love you two and I love your videos. I appreciate your taste tests. However, you always seem to film them when the food is cold. I don't think you can do an accurate or fair test when all the food is cold. May I suggest that in editing, you show part of the end sequence with all the products lined up first, then do the taste test one at a time when they come out of the oven / off the stove, then finish up? I feel like that would give the products a more fair chance. Just an idea.

      I was wondering this as well. Has to be a way of testing products when they are actually at their best.

      I understand where you are coming from of course ( this is my first video by them) They all take a long time to cook so I would be surprised if they could make them warm at the same time. Unless they reheat it but even that changes how things taste sometimes. Each of these takes like an hour and a half - two hours roughly to cook unless they put them all in the same oven but even that would change the cooking times even more since they would be getting less heat to each one. Edit: Also it is smart to maybe do one at a time so they are still warm, I personally liked seeing it done in this format though, it's different from what I've seen before on here but they can maybe do your idea at the beginning then revisit the food in this format to talk about the ingredients and stuff afterward and cook times etc.?

      Agreed. That en croute is amazing when the crust is crispy. Cooking tip is to rotate it after the cook time and let cook for another 10 mins to get brown all around and it come out all flaky and delicious. Any of these would be too dry cold.

    I made several times the Traders Joe's one and it was delicious. It did not have enough vegan gravy, so make extra. The texture was like real turkey meat, so fool your friends, but longterm vegans may get weirded out It must be hot. Go by directions and eat warm for sure, cold not so good.
    These are great, if you can't cook and have no time, if you invite meat-eaters, get two or three options for them, do make extra gravies and you will have an amazing vegan Thanksgiving.

    I have had all those roasts. Gardein is always THE favorite. They have recently raised their prices in our local stores to match some of the other brands, and that is the only downside. Field Roast Celebration Roast is my 2nd fav. It is not really "turkey meat" tasting but it has a good loaf flavor...and great on a sandwich as leftovers. TJ's would be a third choice, and probably the least expensive option.
    Tofurkey is disgusting. It is where vegan taste buds go to die because they have forgotten how turkey is suppose to taste. It has that weird....WANG...after taste, ewwhuh. Their "ham roasts" are even worse. We couldn't finish them. Loaf dropped-kicked out the door like the Flintstone's cat.

  • @dianasmothers6258
    @dianasmothers6258 5 лет назад +24

    The Field Roast celebration roast is going for a more 'ham' flavor/texture, while the Field Roast hazelnut cranberry roast en croute is going for a 'beef wellington' flavor/texture. They aren't trying to be turkey, but they're being compared to turkey alternatives...🤷‍♀️ Field Roast is my fave, though, so maybe I'm biased. 😋

    I’ve been cooking the Tofurkey for years. Although I make my own dressing (stuffing) and don’t like their gravy so I’ve finally come up with a solution a couple years back.
    In a pan I make a bed for the roast of chopped potatoes, carrots and onions. Then I mix an onion/mushroom soup powder with veggie broth and cover the vegetables. Once everything is cooked I scoop out their stuffing and mix it with the broth from the bottom of the pan to make a chunky like gravy .

    You may have already discovered this, but Tofurkey (and probably some of the others) can be cooked in a crock pot. If one does this, the Tofurkey comes out substantially moister, if that's what you want. The gravy (and veggies if you use them) around the Tofurkey wind up being more like a stew, but with good spices they taste great. Anyway, I love your channel and am going through them as I can - good content!

    A little late on this one, but wanted to find turkey for sandwiches. I appreciate your listening the main ingredients, and especially thank you for giving the location where it is produced. Being an Oregonian ... I always try to buy local. Excellent review.

    I don’t love tofurkey! Gardein is my favorite so far and I usually buy that for the holidays.

  • @ampmmogamer6115
    @ampmmogamer6115 5 лет назад

    I usually just buy the one without the gravy packet and make my own mushroom gravy, which is super easy and fast to make. Just make it while the Tofurky is in the oven. I also, generally just put it in a big Roaster Pan, chop up some carrots, onions and potatoes, dump them in all around the Tofurky, then put about two cups of vegetable broth in the pan also. Then half way through cooking, flip the Tofurky and rotate the veggies. One meal in one big pan.

    Thanks so much for posting this comparison video. Love the Gardein Holiday Roast. Sprouts has it on sale this week for 35% off. $11.69. Last year I waited too long and they were sold out! After this video, we will be sure to try the Tofurkey.

    I love the tofurky roast because it’s nostalgic for me. I’ve been eating it for over 15 years but my husband says it’s so salty. He likes the TJs one best. We usually make multiple roasts so everyone is happy 😆

      I used to like Tofurky, but now I think it’s sort of rubbery in texture compared to Trader Joe’s, which has now been our preferred holiday vegan roast. It’s moist and delectable.

    Very grateful you both took the time to offer this comparison for those of us newbie's. My only comment as far as filming presentation of foods is to not constantly be touching and flipping hair during the presentation. ( I realize we are not eating but, presentation is everything) Thank you!

    Hey thanks! That was fun. This will be my 12th vegan Thanksliving, and I really appreciate the taste test. I live in a rural area, so will drive to a city down the road that has a WF and TJ's to find some yummy food for the day. From my area's vegan page, I was leaning towards TJ's, but I think I might see what WF has to offer. I've only made the Tofurky one it the past, so maybe I'll try something different this year. Hey, it's all good when no one gets hurt in the making of our food. Cheers!

    I first came across this video one year before I made the decision to go vegetarian, which presented a whole set of challenges given that I lived in an area that could be considered a "food desert," as I lived in a very rural community. Now I'm temporarily living in a city with a Wegman's and when I saw that they had vegan roasts (yes, roasts, MULTIPLE!), I bought one of everything with this video in mind. Thank you for sharing!

    I think the things I like the best about vegan Thanksgiving, no messy leftovers to have to deal with, no days of defrosting, and no meat hangovers or coma, if you will, that make everyone find a place in the house to go horizontal and nap. That would always ruin the rest of the day for me. All for a reasonable, guilt free price and no one stinking up the bathroom. lol I know...TMI.

    We had the Field Roast sage and garlic roast this year for the first time. It was pretty good, and definitely was nice to have a stand it for turkey for myself and my sister. Our parents, unfortunately, eat turkey, so the small size celebration roast was perfect for two of us. Flavor wise it was OK, but very strong garlic flavor and you don't taste the sage really.

    I agree on all points here. I've had ALL of these roasts. I'd buy three of them again. I am always happy with the Tofurky - but it is the *densest* (maybe that was the word you were looking for) - and you can make great 'tofurky salad' and sandwiches with the leftovers. The FR Celebration Roast is very good but I don't even remember the gravy. The Gardein roast is very nice & moist - and satisfying. I think those three are better than the En Croute - which I raved about when it was new. The TJ's one I've had but don't really remember. The Tofurky *gravy* probably is the best - there's something magical in it, I think!

    Excellent video, and very helpful. My first T-Day as a vegan and I was just going to do sides, but this is wonderful. I am going Gardien for sure. I initially was leaning towards TJ's, but some reviews have pointed me another direction. For me? I want something that looks and has the texture and taste of turkey and it looked like Gardien was the winner for me just visually. Thank you for sharing! 👍😉

    I use these products in a pinch but homemade tofurky is the best. Just mashup some tofu, season, place in colander with weight to drain excess water, scoop out center, fill with stuffing, cover, flip onto roasting pan and glaze with a sesame oil, citrus mixture. Make vegan gravy. I follow a recipe called Mt. Vesuvius, if you can find it on the web.
