Marty Music Man, master of puppets-metallica please
7:39 I don't think you interrupted him enough in this section, Marty.
I know 😒
Leading the witness lol
Basically, suhr makes the guitar fender should be making
What pick ups are in Bobs suhr? They sound very clear
@@JasonHobbsGuitarist I think they sound great I've got V60LPs in mine atm but think I'm gonna buy a set of V70s as they sound great to me. I've just realised I've got the same second name as Bob Lol
@@JasonHobbsGuitarist nice well if I don't like the V70s in person I can always swap them back :) I'd love another Suhr CP in HSS but with a thornbucker in the bridge that humbucker is amazing aha
@@JasonHobbsGuitarist Maybe you should have got Thornbucker with MLs :D
@@JasonHobbsGuitarist ohh nice I'm still undecided if I want a hum in the bridge as mine is routed for one even tho it's a SSS might have to experiment :)
For anyone curious about Suhr- I was recently turned on to Big Wreck- their lead guitarist Ian Thornley is a Big Suhr guy (guitars and amps). I highly recommend you search around RUclips for some of his guitar stuff. A great track to start with is the live version of “albatross” which was actually performed at a Suhr corporate event. Good stuff.
Bob Ryan has arthritis & plays like this!!! You were blessed to have a mentor like him, Marty.
Glad to see you guys jammin', wish I had been there. Thanks for sharing.
I have a Suhr pro and it is a great guitar. It plays better than any of my american standards but as a bedroom player the problem I have with Suhr is that I want to see a Fender logo headstock when I am pretending to be Hendrix, Clapton etc.
You can buy a fender neck if you wnat
Or a Fender sticker
I have a sonic blue classic pro and it's the nicest guitar I've ever played, just the feel of the neck and how responsive the pickup's are is insane. Great guitar.
There's something special and a particular body of sounds in fender like an old school style I can't replace
John worked for Fender. He also worked for Rudy Pensa [built Mark Knopfler's Pensa guitars]. According to John, Rudy purchased a bunch of necks from Scheckner, who at the time were copying the Fender headstock until Fender won their court battle. After Fender won the rights to the headstock design, Rudy told John to simply cut the ball off the Fender headstock, which is how he came up with the original Pensa headstock. He carried it over to Suhr. I've never heard anyone say a bad thing about the Suhr guitars. Nice! Congrats on 700k Marty.
Marty. You have guests. Let them speak. Please. Thank you.
Tony Battle agree
Was frustrating me too!
Yeah Marty. Shut up you putz.
John Suhr served as a Senior Master Builder at Fender Custom Shop at one point in his life. So the argument that “I’ll stick with my Fenders” or “It’s just another Strat rip-off” is invalid here. I love my Fenders. I have an American Deluxe and an American Standard but a Suhr is just on a whole other level. Well gonna stick with the Fenders for now till I can afford one.
I don’t see how him previously working for fender makes that an invalid point. Now if he was the original designer of the body, pickup, and control layouts; then I could see it being invalid. Taking the original and putting your own twist on it doesn’t negate that you have borrowed very heavily which some would say ripped off. They are great guitars. I’ve got a Fender CS, Nash 63, and Suhr CP. All are great guitars, but two could very easily be called ripoffs of the other one.
That point would be valid is John Suhr made every Suhr guitar all by himself.
Excellent description Jack 👍
I think boutique brands are in vogue right now. I am sure they are very nice, but Fender has the staying power. Will anyone want a Suhr in 20 years time?
Well compared to a deluxe and a standard they would be . A Suhr is equivalent to fender custom shop . Fender standards these days are awful . Nicely built but thin as hell sounding
i seriously ask for a lesson of that version of "Cherokee" that Bob played. it was just too good!! Marty please~ can you ask Bob or could you even yourself do a lesson of that?? i need some jazz in my arsenal and that tune just sounds beautiful. as always, love your channel man! from south korea
Fender stratocaster standard neck pickup sound is incomparable. It's has that iconic sound for decades.
To me, Suhr makes the best looking headstock around
Here's my take on Suhr Strats: very playable, amazing stability. Tone wise, very nice, but they're not quite as sweet as a more vintage style instrument (not just Fenders). To me, they sound like a hi-fi reproduction of a great Strat. You can't hear the difference through RUclips compression, so its a small difference, but I definitely hear it in the room playing one. If I was working in a cover band or something I'd probably get a Suhr. But I really love that classic Strat sound, so I'm happy to put up with the downsides to get it. I don't have a real vintage Fender, I play a Hahn 229. Other makers I prefer include LSL.
Depends on how you spec it. Ive heard pretty vintage sounding Suhr's, but they do play like a vintage guitar too. Ive had a 64 pre-cbs strat and dont miss it at all, with my Custom Classic S.
Modern Fender guitars (AM Pro, CS, etc) are generally quite a bit brighter than Suhr.
@@SteveHubbardGuitar and Fender strats have always had the true acoustic sound like if you go through a full clean amp it will sound almost the exact same if you play it unplugged. You can kinda hear that with Marty playing it almost sounds like hes playing it without an amp. Its what makes Fender, Fender.
The bumper on my car is plastic! LOL Car companies stopped using steel on bumpers in the late 60's or so. Great guitar man.
Im about to buy the Squier Strat Marty ! My first electric, thank you for all !
One of the better Suhr demos I've seen. In most of them, the pickups sound "flat" to my ears.
I think Marty should have let the guy speak. The only difference is the pickups. Would that guitar sound better than a Strat Plus, with Lace Sensors or an Elite Strat with Gen4 noiseless pickups? I have a Strat Ultra HSS from 1990 that sounds better than a Suhr. But I digress. I really want to know what the player of the Suhr thought of the differences. The history of John Suhr is that he was a luthier in NYC in Rudy's music shop , later making the famous Pensa-Suhr guitar in the late 80-early 90's and later working for Fender Custom Shop from 1995 to 1997. He probably picked up some experiences with mass guitar production even though he was with the Custom Shop, a low output situation. During his time as a luthier & prior to Fender he designed and built amps. Anybody can get a fret job with Stainless steel frets, costing about 10% or so that a nickel-alloy refret job. The reason for the headstock is that Fender has copyright protection on it, and no one can copy it without cease-and-desist letters from Fender's lawyers.
I also have a 91 strat plus (in midnight wine) the worst part about those guitars are the lace sensors, they sound antiquated and not in a good way, like they were on to something but the parts available were sub par. Too boxy and thin, I immediately swapped out those crap pups for some custom D. Allen's and that guitar went from the one I barely touched to my favorite guitar. Suhr pups are waaaaay better sounding than some poo poo 90s lace sensors every day of the week
Nice guitar. I'm digging Bob's enthusiasm for the new axe! It's bringing out some awesome playing.
This ‘White Room’ intro jam is one of the best I’ve heard, and I’ve heard alot of blues
So natural and beautiful the way they started jamming! I swear Marty is what I aspire to be when I am gonna become older 😂
I doubt you will be able to teach as well as him
Dante 1996 why would you “doubt” someone you don’t even know or have never met in your life? For all you know she might become a guitar teacher at Berkeley.
Don’t spread negativity, instead, try encouraging people
Peace and love
Loved the jam at the end guys.
1995 he became a senior master builder in Fender's Customshop - i think it is important to know.
Interesting demo Marty, I enjoyed it.
Just wondering though, if Bob's Strat needed a fret job, why not get it re-fretted with SS frets instead?
marty, let your friend finish his story first before you ask for another questions. feels unpleasant to hear you two talking at the same time.
No! Marty, you guys were just getting going. Bring him back to play more blues. More gain .
I'll third that!
I'll forth That
2:45 that melody was gorgeous

For those who are turned off by
The headstock shape, John actually has 2 other head shapes that are more rounded. The hybrid head and a Landau head shape. Google it.
+1 for stainless frets. I am heavy handed and play 11s and there is no wear on my frets after hundreds of hours. They do wear pits into the bass strings faster though
The fit on the Suhr guitar necks into the body make an American Fender Strat look like a Squire.
I was in a band with a guy who played both a Suhr Strat and also a Suhr Tele. Impeccable player, and great tone ... but maybe a little 'polite' sounding? Does that make sense?
Great tip on the fret material! Oh man.. sounds wonderful.
I played a Red Suhr Classic S yesterday and it played absolutely amazing. It has become my dream guitar.
I've got a Suhr classic S in sonic blue it's a great instrument
i prefer the fender of course but hey. that really is a sweet strat i will definetly chek that out!
They don’t know much about what they’re talking about. The strat body style is not trademarked. Anyone can use it. The headstock is trademarked. 2nd: Suhr Guitars have a 1.650” nut width. So it’s def wider and a little thicker neck than fenders. Stainless frets that are PLEK’d. The Alnico V’s in the Suhr are unlike any other pickups available today. They utilize a special Alnico V that’s more brittle. Just like the old strats of the early 60’s. That makes a big difference. There’s a deep contour on the lower horn that allows easy access to the higher frets. The tuners are incredible too. Quartersawn nexks, and roasted. Makes for a very stable neck. Which fender doesn’t do either. To top it off, fender uses assembly line workers, who are basic laborers. Suhrs employees are all highly knowledgeable about every aspect of their guitars. I can say from personal experience, Suhr Guitars are some of the absolute best guitars available today. John Suhr is a genius.
Ian Thornley from Big Wreck uses Suhr & he makes them sound sooooo damn tasty. Check out Big Wreck’s first album Marty, classic 90’s post-grunge sound with Thornley’s god-like licks.
Love the color of that Suhr!
I ordered a custom shop guitar. And while waiting I stumbled upon a Fender American Series nodded the way I want. And it blew everything I’ve tried away. And I’ve played a lot of guitars. So I actually canceled my order. Can’t see how it can get better than exactly what I want?!
Good article Marty, another great thing about a Suhr guitar is the feel of the neck with a sanded down finish, makes it play great and it doesn’t get that tacky feel like some other guitars do. John Suhr makes some of the best noiseless pickups too with no hum, you can buy his noise canceling pickup system for any strat or Tele style guitar. Sonny Landreth uses Suhr’s system in a couple of his guitars. Thanks.
Just got one of these in Olympic White. Sweet guitar and Suhr has great customer service. John Suhr is a very cool dude who still works on guitars and frequents message boards (and RUclips). Sounds like Bob might have overpaid a little . I think they are nicely set up to be the next PRS. The price increase was only applicable to the 2018 line that hasn't even been delivered yet and have been renamed Classic S (vs. Classic Pro) but its essentially the same guitar. There is a nice Sonic Blue option as well as well as light "relic" Antique versions. If you look hard enough you could still find these 2000-2200 new a littme more for the Antiques. These are the "affordable" Suhr's compared to their superstratty Standards, Moderns and Customs shop offerings.
The comparable Strat for this would be the Elite (but sans the S1 Switch but plus SS frets) or perhaps a Custom Shop job. Don't understand the hate for the headstock. I think its sexy. Guitar manufactures have been able to copy the classic Strat, Tele and LP shapes since Gibson lost their PRS case and the Supreme Court declined to hear the challenge. The argument is that no one buys a PRS Silver Sky or a Suhr Classic or Suhr Aura ( their take on the LP) confused its a Fender or Gibson and neither of these guys have "Design Patents' on the shapes (which would have expired long ago).
I'm currently saving for one these in Surf Green they feel and sound amazing personally a massive step up compared to even fender elite in terms of Fit and Finish imo
Update: ending up getting a sonic blue classic Pro its beautiful and plays like a dream :D
As far as Suhr goes, I'd love an Ian Thornley signature! However, price wise they are way out of my ballpark. Oh well, guess I'll stick with my Fenders. Great video, Marty!
The Ian Thornley classic C relic model is the best Suhr (and guitar) that I have ever played. Kills, fender custom shop and other suhr models..
I am curious, Fact is the major benefit of the Fender bolt on neck is that 1. For a gigging musician (usually with limited funds) you can replace the neck and keep gigging. 2nd is that it is usually cheaper to replace than to refret. especially 7 times. The collector still would not recover the cost of that many refrets. The question is why would you not replace the neck or if you don't trust that the feel of the new neck will be different, refret with steel frets? NOTE: I am not a collector and really DO NOT CARE what my guitar is worth to some one else when I no longer feel its works for me.
@4:11 I don’t think the bumper on any car has been steel in 50 yrs. 😂 I get the point though.
Love my suhr - best guitar I’ve ever played
Very nice comparison, thank you for this, may I know what you think about the balance of the Suhr compared to the fender? Which one has "better" balance when wearing the guitar with a strap? I'm just curious because the Fender Strat is famous for its great balance (which is perfect for me) while wearing it, but with a smaller headstock from the Suhr, the balance might change. I just wanna know how much difference (if there's any) do you feel about their balance. Thank You.
I'm a fender strat guy...tried others but always come back to fender...Gibson too...LP can't beat them
Marty needs that
So good to see Bob again.
Hi Marty,a little off topic. But I have to ask, I have a Taylor714ce, I noticed it has fret buzz sounding like your Taylor. Is this normal or a Taylor thing? Thanks and love your videos.Jim
this is the best guitar channel on youtube!
JoystickArcade This one, Paul Davids and Darrel Braun are the best of the community
Marty for Christ's sake ask ONE question and let the man answer, don't interrupt with your own answers before he's done speaking leaving you guys to compete for space. Cool guitars! 🤙👌
Hey Marty, what would be the best model for me to transition from acoustic to first electric? Relatively new guitar player. Thanks in advance!
Sounds awesome Marty !
I have both and love both. The Suhr is instant SRV if you want that tone. So good. The stainless frets is why I got one. I’ve got several strats that I’ve worn the frets out on which sucks cause one of them is my favorite strat I have but with the Suhr I don’t have to worry about that.
Does it really have a SRV tone? Every single one I've listened to sounds terrible. It's disappointing because I want to like them.
brett james Yes it does. I got mine after hearing Ian Thornley. The tone on the song Ghosts from Big Wreck is just awesome. ruclips.net/video/3uYzg6dgoDU/видео.html
Every single suhr I have listened to sounds very "airy" and open. Not warm and luscious.
Sounds like they would take pedals well.
Wanted an alternative to a Fender after all the issues I had with my Am Std Tele, but I am afraid Suhr is not it.
In saying that, might be alright with Lollar pickups or something. Probably plays awesome.
Try the Suhr ML standard pickups if you like lollar pickups the set in this guitar in the video are suhr V70s which are very clear and vintage sounded
@@HollowRick Cheers Jamie will give it a look.
@@brettjames9088 no worries Brett :)
i love the Suhr's warm sound, dont get me wrong the strat is great but the suhr has that unique sound that i like
Warm?! They might be high def, open, bright, take well to pedals etc. But not warm. Especially when not compared to a strat. At least not the couple of dozen I have heard.
They sound harsh and modern to me.
@@radio7353 well I'm not sure what to tell you bud, I disagree, and you just disagreed with my disagreement, so now I will disagree with your disagree about my disagree about his comment.
So I guess it is deniable afterall and you should stand corrected.
Feel free to elaborate I suppose, but comparing a suhr to a strat, to my ears, and I've heard dozens of suhrs and hundreds of strats, they def sound more open, less warmth.
Im hardly Johnathan Curoso with that opinion either.
Hey what would be the best guitar for blues, i’m thinking bout getting a tagima 335....
Strat
Bob's playing has such a slick feel to it..
No way, built in Lake Elsinore? I have driven by there many times. Who'd thought.
If you want to see an amazing player who has a signature model , look no further that Canadian guitarist Ian Thornley of Big Wreck .
Let him speaks dude
Maybe it was just the angle, but it did appear that the body on the Suhr was a tad shorter and maybe longer than the Strat. Personally, I preferred the tone of the Strat, but to each his own.
Pete Thorn II who played for Melissa Ethridge, Don Henley and Chris Cornell to name a few plays a suhr
Great video. Question, can they refret strats with steel frets or do they have to use nickel?
I wish Marty had let him talk, because to me the only difference is the pickups. But hell yeah you can refret to steel.
@@alfredh5022 only difference Is the stainless frets? Clearly you haven't played one
Tone for days. I love it!!!
I will be the first to admit that Suhr builds a superb guitar, and the consensus is that they build guitars that Fender "should" be building. But they still use Fender designs. I'm not talking about it from a legality standpoint--I'm talking about it from a pure design standpoint. A car manufacturer wouldn't straight up just copy a Honda Civic, but improve it with Xenon headlights and use woven Yak hair for the upholstery and call it a "Masterline Super Commuter." It's still a freaking Honda Civic. There's an opportunity to here to create your own designs. If you're a kid in high school building a guitar as a project, I can see using a template--but these are professional makers charging thousands of dollars for a guitar. Design something unique.
People spend money designing guitars that people will buy. You go design something totally different and see who buys it. It will be nothing but a novelty.
ahhh well I'd say both are just fine! Awesome video!
Have two Suhrs (Classic Antique and Modern). They are great guitars. Check out Aaron Marshall for another incredible Suhr player (in addition to Mateus, Andy Wood, and Thornley). Tom Quayle and Martin Miller are now playin the “I miss my Suhr Modern” Ibanez AZ. Also incredible.
Bob is something serious on that axe....
This guy said he had his guitar 36 years he must live in a dam good nabourhood
He says his Suhr is wider than Fender. And it does look wider. But I thought Suhr Pro's had narrow 1.650" nut width?
Not any less narrow than a vintage strat
Info is incorrect nickel is not a soft metal it's actually a hard metal used in making stainless steel...I used to work in a steel mill and cutting parts made of nickel was always a slower process due to the hardness of the metal.
Normal frets are a nickel silver. So, not pure nickel. Nickel, cobalt and copper i think. They’re relatively soft. And will wear out. Stainless steel frets are best by far!
Cherokeeeee!
that suhr sounds extra tasty idk about 2500 but def better!!!!!
great vid. Sweet sounding guitae
I own two music man's with stainless steel frets, I don't know if it makes a difference but it plays so much better than a Fender for me.
Suhr is the best consumer manufacturer of guitars ever, there I said it.
Pretty cool video Marty. I have an Alvarez classic 2 I like it better than my HSS standard.
guys this is awesome, can we get a link to the original 'cherokee' song please ? I'd like to try this :)
Yay for Mateus asato
Loved that guitar. :) I never heard him say how much he paid for it though.

Suhr vs EBMM Cutlass review Marty!
Marty please do a tutorial on cherokee!! Sounds soo good.
2:46 someone knows the name of the song?
Suhr more modern, not as fat sounding ....for me ! Awesome guitar for touring or studio...
Fender doesn't have a patent on the body shape. Just the headstock.
Fender all the way! I’m not into copies no matter the quality.
What pedal did you use in Enter Sandman?
I like Suhr better after playing both- plus Suhr has 24 frets there are no Fender Strats like that for metal.
When I grow up I want to be a Stratacaster!
Bumper on my car is plastic! LOL
Great stuff Marty! Could you do Chris Cornell Nothing compares 2 U... including solo. I cant find good enough lesson for it.
Great video thanks! I just went to Mesa Hollywood and picked up a sonic blue classic s!!!
That's funny as so did I always loved the pastels like Bob aha
Wow his blues solo is tasty
I love Suhr, but the biggest stumbling block is the price. They are worth it, but it is a lot of money to pull out of your pocket.
Does the Suhr have a stiffer feel than the Fender?
Not to me. They’re incredibly smooth, and the strings just move like butter. It’s the ss frets. I’m currently putting stainless frets on my tele I built for this reason.
Also they have a compound radius. 9”-12” so, very good feel all the way up the neck. Fender doesn’t do compound necks
Nice but I can not get past the law of diminishing returns when it comes to guitars. You go up $1000 but you do not get a whole lot more for your money.
Can someone recommend Noiseless Pickups for my Strat. Looking for all the Quack, Chime and Twang - without the 60 cycle hum and also a complimentary bridge humbucker. No high gain. Low output.
Electro Harmonix noise cancelling pedal.
