  • What is Ice and Water Shield exactly? Ice and Water Shield is still a fairly new product in the roofing industry, but boy, it's made a huge impact on our ability to waterproof a roof and properly keep out water in difficult areas. There's obviously some drawbacks, but in this video, we are going to focus on the positives of #iceandwatershield and why we think it should be installed on every sloped roof. #roofunderlayment #peelandstick

    Good information and a nice video!. I agree and I love ice and water shield and I use it on all my roofs just as you say. You mislead, imo, with a couple things I think are mistakes. Shingles are waterproof. When working, they do not allow water to seep anywhere. Water gets under a functioning roof because of: either being driven up by wind, through capillary action (water runs up between close surfaces that are not sealed perfectly), or due to condensation from under the roof (warm moist air meets cold roof). Ice and water shield, sticks to the underlayment to create a water proof barrier to protect the underlayment more or less from all 3 circumstances. Also the sloped edge of a roof is the "rake" you miss spell that in the titling at 3:11.

    I live in Climate Zone 2, zero ice or snow, just lots of hot days and occasional tropical storms and hurricanes.
    Have a question for a new construction home.
    Do you still recommend water shield on the hips, eaves and ridges for my location ?
    I planned on installing it on the penetrations and valleys. Your thoughts?
    I was considering OC WeatherLock Flex or Mat.

    • @DigitalRoofingInnovations
      @DigitalRoofingInnovations  2 года назад +1

      Andrew, most coastal building codes require it now. Basically, it's just going to help if water is blown up the shingle at the eaves and rakes. I am still a little undecided about it. Ice and Water Shield is an amazing product but it comes with a fairly substantial additional cost.
      Time will tell whether it's really worth it in warm weather areas or not. As for the material you chose, either one is just fine!

    I have a question. Our roof is approx 15 years old archetectural shingles and due to being a low pitch roof(2/12) the roof was 100% covered with I&W shield. I needed to pull up several rows of shingles about 5 feet wide to replace some damaged plywood. The problem is the upper half of each shingle is totally stuck to the I&W shield. I can remove the nails but it's like the shingles are grown to the roof. The couple of shingles I have gotten off ripped apart just above the nailing strip leaving the upper half of the shingle still attached to the I&W. Any help or suggestions for getting these up would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @Maynardd
      @Maynardd 2 года назад +1

      Shingles should not be installed on anything under a 3/12 pitch. If you can’t get the shingles off because they are stuck to the ice and water shield, sometimes they’re easier to pull off working them with a flat bar when it’s colder out, or actually heating them up with a torch. Which is extremely dangerous

    Haven't watched the whole video yet, but i used to do roofing in saskatchewan and we always used ice and water on the eaves and other areas that are prone to ice/water build up areas.
    I recently moved to Vancouver, BC and I have met 1 roofer who uses it. Its odd because they do get the occasional snowfall and under 0°c tempurature. Like most homeowners here have no protection if the weather permits ice damming here, which I don't get why they wouldn't opt for it seeing as it would be a costly repair if ice damming occurs.

    • @DigitalRoofingInnovations
      @DigitalRoofingInnovations  3 года назад

      I couldn't agree more if I could. We use it even in areas where ice damming isn't really an issue, but any place the roof is prone to a leak. I find it VERY odd that your roofers aren't using it way up there. For the cost to install it, it's a no brainer in cold areas where ice damming is normal!

      Great question. Ice and water shield is designed to be self sealing. The tar-like bottom layer is designed to melt and seal around any nail penetrations.

  • @larrycrookshanks1646
    @larrycrookshanks1646 9 месяцев назад

    Not every roof needs Ice and Water shield even in cold climates. If you insulate and ventilate correctly and your house is a basic ranch or Colonial with a 5/12 pitch or greater you will be fine with #30lb felt . If you have valley's then you had best install ice shield down the entire length an 8' out from each lower edge and 6' up. If your State requires it then you better adhere to those requirements.

  • @user-me7qn6cb8b

    If water gets under the shingles to the ice and water except for an occasional ice dam hasn't the roof failed. Doesnt water between the 2 just sit and rust out the nails and water soak the shingles from the underside? I do believe ice and water other then ice dams its original intention is a manufacturers con to increase sales. Thats just 50 years experience speaking.

    Why the roofers do not cover the whole of roof deck with ice and water?
    To be honest when I think about other underlays such as felt, even synthetic ones, I don’t know how they can really prevent leakage to roof structure after hundreds of nail on shingles make holes on them?!!!
    With ice and water, as they are self-healing, no matter how many holes can be made by shingle nails

    • @DigitalRoofingInnovations

      Good question! #1 reason is that the homeowner does not want to pay for it. it's very expensive. Our high end clients always pay for it. But the average person does not want (or need really) to spend that much.
      I only recommend it on a roofing system that will last forever, not asphalt shingles.

    putting ice around boots and other penetration does not make sense if it does not go all the way down to the gutter... that's why it is not a code so first install boots flashing or other correctly because if these leaks ice and water around it doesn't help the leak is gonna be just lower

    • @DigitalRoofingInnovations
      @DigitalRoofingInnovations  2 года назад +1

      It will still roll down the synthetic. We do it so if there is a leak around the penetration, there is a secondary backup to prevent water from just pouring in.

    • @johnny1980ns
      @johnny1980ns 2 года назад +1

      In this case one can always overlap the ice and water onto the headlap of the course of shingle below the penetration to redirect any leaks back onto the roof.

      * As I understand, if you put down asphalt shingles on top of the ice and water barrier without an underpayment first being applied on top of the ice and water barrier the shingles will get glued to the ice and water barrier. You'll have a heck of a time removing the shingles when you need to replace them.

    • @DigitalRoofingInnovations
      @DigitalRoofingInnovations  3 года назад

      @@Josh-ww5kz yes, it's about 4x the price, but you don't use it on the entire roof (unless the pitch is really low). We typically use it along the eaves and rakes (in a colder climate), target patch around boots or any protrusions, around the chimney, and finally in the valleys. • @DigitalRoofingInnovations
      @DigitalRoofingInnovations  2 года назад +1
