  • Mental Health Speaker Series: The Happiness Cocktail and Other Practices for Wellbeing
The pandemic and the rise in hate-crimes has triggered a rise in depression and anxiety amongst our young and the old. Remote learning and feelings of isolation can exasperate the problem. For AAPIs, the stigma behind mental health is strong, which explains why data shows AAPIs have the lowest help-seeking rate of any racial/ethnic group, with only 23% of AAPI adults with mental illness receiving treatment in 2019.
After these devastating mass shootings lately, please join us to hear about how we can help ourselves and our loved ones get through this very tragic time. In anticipation of this time of celebrating AAPI contributions and recognizing the importance of mental health, LACAAEA has partnered up with the LA County Department of Mental Health to bring you the first event of the Mental Health Speaker Series, titled The Happiness Cocktail and Other Practices for Well-being.
Our speaker, Dr. Derek K Hsieh, is the Mental Health Clinical Program Head of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Long Beach Asian Pacific Islander Family Mental Health Center. In addition to serving the API communities, for many years he managed the Psychiatric Mobile Response Teams (PMRT) in Los Angeles County that respond to mental health crises in the community, and provided consultation and assistance to law enforcement agencies in crisis negotiation with barricaded suspects and hostage situations in Los Angeles County.
