DIY Harbor Freight Kayak Trailer Build

  • In this video I give a full walk through of the Harbor Freight 40x48 utility trailer that I converted to a kayak trailer. On this build I only did a few modifications. The one major modification I did was add a 10-foot steel extension. This gives plenty of room for the Old Town Bigwater 132. I have about 2 to 2 1/2 feet from the front of the trailer to the back of my Subaru Crosstrek. This was a fun build that only took a few hours to complete.

    I am currently building my kayak over the winter with trolling motor, battery, etc. My thought has always been to modify the harbor freight trailer in a similar manner, but everyone was using the larger, and I want the smaller one you used. Thanks for the video, I see myself replicating soon. 🙂

      I absolutely love this thing. Super convenient and easy project. The only thing I have since modified is the bunks. The PVC cracked so I went with wooden, carpeted. So much more sturdy and cheap. If you search my page I did a video on the mod about two weeks ago.

    Lower the tire pressure to stop the bouncing. 10 - 15psi will work for that lite of a load..

      I’ve been using it weekly and love it. So easy to get the kayak on and out of the water. No carts to mess with. The only time I car-top now is if I’m headed to a non-trailer friendly area. Good luck.

      The Electrical Conduit is MADE for being outside (or, in some cases, underground?), and is a much better bet for making "Bunks" out of. I'm thinking along the lines of outdoor carpet (Bunk Carpet) glued (and possibly riveted) to the Gray Elec. Conduit for the Harbor Freight "heavy-duty?" (1720 lb.) trailer I bought today.
      Heck, even my little Titan 10.5 weighs more than 210 lbs., and I know the Titan-X 12.5 is gonna be a LOT more - especially with that 3 hp. motor and 165 amp battery...! (Yes, I AM spending my kids "inheritance money", as ya only go around once!). Lol

      Glad you found it helpful. One thing to note is that I did end up switching to carpeted wooded bunks instead of the pvc. The tubes ended up cracking.

    The only problem I found is that the tow bar is not 2" square. It is 2.5" wide by 2"h. So if you're thinking to use some type of extender, it may not work. I work in the sign industry, so I just got a 2"x2" galvanized steel 8ft post and mounted from the center cross beam like the original.

      Hi Mark. So far this has really been a back saver. As far as bouncing goes, it certainly bounces back there, but nothing crazy. Here in California you can only legally tow up to 55mph anyway, so that helps the bounce a bit.

    • @DaveysWorldFishing
      @DaveysWorldFishing  Год назад

      I believe they are listed as a max speed rating if 45. Here in Cali you can only tow at a max speed of 55. With the heavier tongue extension, it adds about a hundred pounds keeping it on the ground more going over bumps and rough road.
      I am certainly not going to suggest going over what the company has rated them at.
