  • Recently I had a job that required spot welding. I seldom use my spot welder, but for certain situations it is the right tool for the job. There are some good RUclips videos on building your own spot welder. Here's one: • Make a Spot Welder for...

    For specific application, the spot welder is ideal. Just used this week to laminate strips of stainless steel.

    Thanks George. That does look like a quick and easy way to stick 'em together...

    I do a lot of spot welding. There a number of myths regarding this. One is that you can’t weld aluminum. In theory, any metal that has more resistance than copper can be spot welded. The closer the resistance is, the harder it is to separate. Aluminum leaves a thin coating on the tips. Usually, this doesn’t cause a problem, but it can cause the tips to stick. It takes a longer time to weld aluminum, just as it does in arc welding. I’ve welded two 1/8” pieces together, just as I have with steel and stainless. While the specs say 1/8” total for a 120 volt model, and 3/16 for a 220 model, you can actually safely weld up to twice that thickness. Just give a few seconds between welds, say 5 seconds. I do it all the time, and my welders don’t get hot.

      Thanks for that information. I've never spot welded aluminium. Will give that a try. If you have any more tips, I'd like to hear or see them.

      Don't try really thin materials (aluminum). 16 gauge is about as low as you can go. but the worst that can happen is burn through and messy tips. you have a timer, so you can give it a go. I found I had to make a timer when I was spotting 32 gauge galvinized. the times were so low, I would burn right through it. I don't have a channel. I like yours though.

      I want to use spot welding for 18ga sheet metal, for how many seconds should I hold the button? For how long should I let the machine rest among spots according to your experience? Thanks for your help. By the way, Im thinking in buying a 220V machine.

    If you do not have a timer, when you press the electrodes together and you feel it give a little bit, stop, it means that the weld is complete.

    Hi George, thanks for the video. At what number did you set the timer for the 18ga?

    How come you don't need any shielding gas with spot welding? I assume that, even though the two plates are up against each other, some atmospheric gas is between, when the weld starts.

      There are many welding applications where you don't need shielding gas. Examples such as arc welding, gas welding, fusion welding or forge welding. Spot welding is another example.

    How much pressure needs to be applied when spot welding this gauge stainless? Thanks for the vid! ,

    • @897473
      @897473  8 лет назад

      +howardtoob Howard, I don't have anything to measure pressure. I do know when I use the spot welder with this gauge stainless I have to do some trial and error so I get a weld, but do not burn into the metal. The trial and error also includes adjusting the heat.

    any thing straight out the box you had to do to get it working? cause I'm having problems

    • @897473
      @897473  9 лет назад

      +aanthony21 Two adjustments that I make for every spot weld setup: 1) pressure at contact. Not too tight and not too loose. 2) The right heat setting. Not too hot and not too cold. Spot welding is not something I do everyday, so I have to spend some time with trial and error.

    how we can weld dissimilar materials in resistance spot welding machines????

    • @897473
      @897473  8 лет назад

      +noor elhuda You will need to find a web site or forum that deals more specifically with spot welding. I only occasionally use the spot welder, so I am not a good overall source of information.

      Can probably weld two 1/8" pieces of steel together. I generally use it for 20 gauge material.
