  • Follow our Conservation specialists as they display the incredible moving 'Omniverse' sculpture alongside the fragile feather 'Infinity' dress, creating a mesmerising visual illusion which resembles a hypnotic portal to another world - or Wonderland.
The 'Infinity' dress is a spectacular piece of engineering created by Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen and American sculptor Anthony Howe. Howe designed the spherical 'Omniverse' sculpture, which Iris van Herpen collaborated on as a central feature in her Hypnosis collection runway show in 2019.
The dress was originally designed to be worn on the catwalk by a model who walked through the 'Omniverse' sculpture as a portal for the collection, creating a state of hypnosis for the audience. The work plays with the concepts of space, time and scale, reminiscent of Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland books. This is the first time they have been shown in a museum.
See the dress and sculpture in our Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser exhibition from Saturday, 22 May 2021.

Designer Iris Van Herpen: I want to make a JRPG final boss
Victoria and Albert Museum curators: Well this is supposed to be about Alice in Wonderland but if you're gonna pitch fire like that we'll find a way to fit it in

Perhaps the greatest gift we have is curiosity. Without it everything would be accepted at face value and all would stay the same. But those of us with curiosity know that we are in a wondrous place, everyday is different and there will always be unending things to learn.

Amazing... the museum sculpture would work even better if a human being was always in it. Every day a different model...

So they didn't even turn the feathers on the dress on when they showed it inside the moving sculpture. Some people really have a lot of luxury in the amount of bullshit they can concern themselves with.

The V and A is in danger of losing sight of its remit. Is it a museum or an art gallery? Why is it necessary to “explore who we are”? Why not a place to know with certainty how we became? All this ethereal anal gazing is best left to the Tate Modern. The true values of life are what we were and came to be through that progress. Dresses with revolving bits may tickle the eyes, but is vacuous in its contribution to understanding.

£20 a ticket for an exhibition that we already subsidise. It's an elitist exhibition. It can be great but that's not very democratic or covid economy friendly.
