- Cards in this 2002 NLCS looked like the Cards of the 2000 NLCS - Games 3-4-5 were one run games. So that made this short series somewhat fun - Miguel Cairo, Rolen's replacement, after having himself a nice NLDS against Arizona, he goes on and went 3-4 in game 1 with a home run against the Giants. Ill always remember Cairo as a nice utility player in his career, especially when he was with the Yankees. He played over 17 seasons
I would’ve loved to see this Giants team in a series with the 10, 12, and 14 teams. Glad to see Dusty finally win a WS as a manager in 2022(even if it’s with Houston) but it really should’ve came in 02.
THe best teams in the NL in 2002 were the Braves and Diamondbacks. But in the NLCS, it's the two hottest teams that are squaring up: the Giants and Cardinals. It was a rematch of the 1987 NLCS, which St. Louis won in 7. And the Cards were the sentimental favorites coming in. Busch Stadium was the sight for Game 1. The Cards chose not to pitch to Bonds and walked him three times in the game. But Barry's teammates made the Birds pay. Lofton, David Bell and Benito Santiago all homered as the Giants took the opener, 9-6. Santiago drove in 4 runs in the game. There was also a skirmish in the 5th when an inside pitch to Lofton set off a tete a tete between the two teams. Tony LaRussa and Dusty Baker exchanged words in the melee. (It won't be the last time it will happen between these two managers). Anyway, Rich Aurilia and Jason Schmidt were the stars of Game 2. Aurilia because he hit two dingers. And Schmidt with his 7 2/3 innings of one run ball and 8 punchouts. In all, San Francisco won again, 4-1, and took a two game lead back to the Bay Area. There, in Game 3, Barry Bonds erased a 4-1 deficit in the 5th with a three run blast into McCovey Cove. But Eli Marrero countered with a blast of his own in the 6th, and the Cardinals made it stand, 5-4, to get back in the series. Game 4 was tied at 2 in the 8th. With two outs and the bases empty, the Cards chose to walk Bonds intentionally. But Santiago again made them regret the decision with a two-run home run. It was all SF needed for a 4-3 win and a chance to win the pennant the next night at Pac Bell Park. In Game 5, the Giants trailed 1-0 in the 8th. They loaded the bases and the Cardinals HAD to pitch to Bonds. And Bonds hit a fly ball deep enough to score the tying run. Then, one inning later, a pair of two out singles knocked Morris from the game. On came Steve Kline to face Lofton. On one pitch, Lofton singled to right and Bell ran home with the run to win the game 2-1 and the pennant for the Giants. Benito Santiago was named NLCS MVP for his performance in Games 1 and 4. And in the World Series, the theme is "CALIFORNIA, HERE WE STAY!" For Barry Bonds (after 17 years) and the GIants, it's on to Anaheim for the Fall Classic.
That 1987 NLCS was brutal for the Giants, because of that game 6 and game 7, not scoring any runs both games. Yup, to think that as of the 2020 decade, both Dusty and Tony are still managing. And youre right about their drama not being over after this 2002 NLCS. What surprised me the most was how much Tino struggled, that LaRussa didnt even start him in game 5 nor used him to pinch hit. 2002 World Series will be between Angels vs Giants. This is the first time that the World Series will be between two wild card winners when there was only one wild card team per league (1994-2019). The other time we will have a World Series during this span of two wild card teams will be in the 2014 World Series. (Royals vs Giants). Both World Series went 7 games.

8:13 What the heck was Fernando Vina thinking. Heck, Vina was having a horrendous game 3 defensively 9:12 Bonds game tying 3-run-home run in game 3. Nice batflip 13:18 Benito Santiago clutch home run in game 4 to give the Giants the lead 16:45 Imagine if Bonds had hit a grand slam in that situation 17:58 Kenny Lofton ends the NLCS
The Giants won the pennant on the same night Terrell Owens autographed a football with a Sharpie
It was a fantastic day in San Francisco sports
Bonds, Owens…the bay had more successful teams after 2003 but they won’t ever have great athletes with personalities like they did again
First postseason series meeting between these two teams since 1987 and the Giants' first NL pennant since 1989.
5 straight NLCS losses at Busch Stadium dating back to 1996
Benito Santiago was a BEAST

Benito Santiago hitting like it’s 1987
One of the Greatest Duane Kuiper Homerun Call of all Time

I remember in 2014 telling my friend during game 5 of the nlcs that a player would do a lofton ( walkoff to the World Series) boy was I right
Those early to mid 00’s Cards teams were so close but so far. Glad they finally got over the hump. Greatest NL franchise of all time. #cardinals
