The Astros/Cardinals had a great rivalry for a hot minute after meeting in in the NLCS back to back years (04-05), it's a shame that rivalry has become such a distant memory since Houston left for the AL in 2013.
The way that series ended was so bizarre. When Pujols hit that monster 3 run shot in Game 5, we all thought the Cardinals were going to come back and stun the Astros again, especially with Mulder, and Morris pitching Games 6 and 7 with them both being in St Louis. But then Roy Oswalt reversed the momentum in Game 6 and put an end to the series and the old Busch Stadium. Thats the great thing about baseball. Just when you think you know the outcome, YOU DON'T!
Game 4 on Sunday basically went H2H with Patriots at Broncos on CBS (outside of a few areas in NY/CA that got Jets/Bills and Chargers/Raiders, respectively)
Cardinals made the WS in 2004, Astros made the WS in 2005, Cardinals made it again in 2006 and even won it WSOX made the WS in 2005 and even won it That sure makes 2003 more painful for the Cubs
Lance Berkman, hitting left handed, has 3 home runs at home this postseason, all three hitting them to the left field short-side in the Astros stadium: One home run against the Braves, and two home runs against the Cardinals..
That Game-5 was the beginning of the end for Brad Lidge as a dominant bullpen pitcher, as Lidge will struggle in the 2005 World Series, and also the 2006 season, and also the 2007 season. Lidge also almost blew the save as well in both Game-3 AND Game-4 in this 2005 NLCS Lidge wont “recover” his dominant form until his 2008 season with the Phillies..
Even with the Astros winning the NL Pennant over the Cards, this NLCS will always be remembered for the Pujols home run over Lidge. For a moment, I thought this NLCS would have resembled the 1986 ALCS with the 3-1 comeback, the Pujols home runs in game 5 resembling the home run of game 5 in the 1986 ALCS..
Except, the Astros were NOT the 1986 Angels. Not with Roy Oswalt pitching splendidly in the clincher. As for Mark Mulder, after 2005 when he won 17 games, he lost his stuff as he would win only 6 games over the next three years and by 2009, he was out of baseball.
A rematch of the 2004 NLCS. This is the first time since both the 1991-1992 NLCS (Pirates-Braves) that the same two teams have faced each other in back-to-back NLCS. As for ALCS back-to-back rematches, its pretty recent with both the 2000-2001 ALCS (Yankees-Mariners) and the 2003-2004 ALCS (Yankees-RSOX).
Game 5 on Monday was a St. Louis double dip: It didn’t go so well for the Rams (blew a 17-0 lead at Indianapolis and give up 45 points) but oh that 9th inning Redbird rally
Roy Oswalt, who had been overshadowed on his rotation by Pettitte and Clemens (and even Wade Miller/Shane Reynolds from 2001-2003), showed why he is the ace of this celebrated pitching staff
Jim Edmonds getting tossed late in game 4 in a one-run-game in the middle of an at-bat, WOW And Edmonds replacement (John Rodriguez) hit a blast in that at-bat, but to the wrong part of the stadium, especially with the speedy rookie Willy Taveras playing centerfield, reminding you of Beltran’s two webgems in game 5 of the 2004 NLCS against the Cards in Houston..
The Astros making their 1st World Series is an incredible story: start 15-30 No Kent/Beltran A lack of bat consistency save for Ensberg Going 70-41 which was just enough to overtake Philly The Biggio HR off Wagner Needing 18 innings to get past ATL Having to overcome the Pujols HR But they did it
Had it not been for the Pujols home run in game 5, Astros would have been 6-0 at home against the Cards in 2004 and 2005, winning all home games 3-4-5 in back to back NLCS..
0:45 WOW, the Cardinals had 13 successful safety/suicide bunt squeezes this 2005 season, including in game 1 22:04 Astros giving the Cardinals some of their own 2005 medicine in game 6, with the suidice/safety bunt squeeze, like the Cards have done to everyone in the 2005 season, including the Astros in game 1.
This 2005 NLCS of Astros-Cardinals had its spicy moments and spicy games, just like the 2004 NLCS. Games 2-3 were very fun games Game-4 and Game-5 were very entertaining games with very spicy endings both, entertaining 9th innings both games. But Game-1 and Game-6 were a bit of a DUD, AND there was no Game-7. And of course, no Carlos Beltran in this NLCS, and no Jeff Kent in this NLCS, and no Scott Rolen in this NLCS, and Bagwell was basically not playing in this NLCS due to the injury..
I always wonder what it would have been like to have the White Sox vs Cardinals in the '05 world series. It would have been really cool as they were the teams with the best records that year. Also it would have been a midwest world series with Chicago and St. Louis not too far from each other.
Heres the problem, you had Reggie Sanders on deck, who had been a monster for the Cardinals all postseason, either way, Lidge was going to have a giant challenge strobe to the plate.

This was first and only NLCS win for the Astros before moved to American League side in 2013
Crazy how the most memorable moment of the whole series was from the LOSING team
The way that series ended was so bizarre. And we had just seen an NLCS 3-1 comeback in 2003

@@cdelano81 at least Mulder-Hudson-Zito all won a ring, but sadly not with the Athletics
Reggie Sanders was an old Astro NL Central nemesis on the Reds
In Game 1, party like it’s 1995
Legend has it that Pujols HR has still not landed

6:03 Jim Edmonds webgem, reminding you of his webgem in game 7 of last year 2004 NLCS against the Astros.
This was Larry Walker final season in MLB, as he has retired after this season..
This was Busch Stadium 2 final season, with game 6 being the final game..
WOW, so both Bengie Molina and Yadier Molina lead all of MLB with passed balls in 2005.
Jim Edmonds getting tossed late in game 4 in a one-run-game in the middle of an at-bat, WOW
And Edmonds replacement (John Rodriguez) hit a blast in that at-bat, but to the wrong part of the stadium, especially with the speedy rookie Willy Taveras playing centerfield, reminding you of Beltran’s two webgems in game 5 of the 2004 NLCS against the Cards in Houston..
The Astros making their 1st World Series is an incredible story:
start 15-30
No Kent/Beltran
A lack of bat consistency save for Ensberg
Going 70-41 which was just enough to overtake Philly
The Biggio HR off Wagner
Needing 18 innings to get past ATL
Having to overcome the Pujols HR
But they did it
For the first time ever, the Astros are going to the World Series.
For the first time ever, the state of Texas will host World Series games..
Game 3 on Saturday ended just a few minutes before Michigan Man Chad Henne’s final play touchdown pass to Mario Manningham against Penn State
Matt Morris is now a free agent and he will sign with the Giants in the offseason..
Had it not been for the Pujols home run in game 5, Astros would have been 6-0 at home against the Cards in 2004 and 2005, winning all home games 3-4-5 in back to back NLCS..
For the drama of Game 5 and the finality of game 6, STL really blew this series in game 4 (blown 7th inning lead, missed opportunities in the 9th)
18:06 “Where’s the Andy Pettitte reaction?”
LaRussa is now 1-4 in five NLCS series with the Cardinals..
And the 1 he won was basically a toss up
Farewell Busch Stadium
0:45 WOW, the Cardinals had 13 successful safety/suicide bunt squeezes this 2005 season, including in game 1

Biggio and Bagwell at long last will play in the World Series
I still don’t know how John Mabry was not able to beat the doubleplay at the end of game 4, which would have tied the game..
Did Gm 1 have a rain delay? I noticed Gm 1 was running simultaneously with the White Sox/Angels Gm 2.
The Astros' first-ever NL pennant in franchise history.
David Eckstein: so clutch
(Why did the Angels get rid of him?)
They rather have Orlando Cabrera
I always wonder what it would have been like to have the White Sox vs Cardinals in the '05 world series. It would have been really cool as they were the teams with the best records that year. Also it would have been a midwest world series with Chicago and St. Louis not too far from each other.
9th inning game 5: why not just load the bases and take your chances with someone else? It’s Albert freaking Pujols!
Lidge actually had very nice career numbers against Pujols before this home run
Heres the problem, you had Reggie Sanders on deck, who had been a monster for the Cardinals all postseason, either way, Lidge was going to have a giant challenge strobe to the plate.
Many bad umpire calls against both the Cardinals and Angels in each LCS
That's refball 4 ya
In game 2 Houston broke through at Busch which they could not do in 4 tries last year
Astros vs White Sox
Who ya got?
If the Astros pitching can keep the WSOX offense to 3 runs or less, than I got the Astros.
Any more runs, than I got the WSOX
White Sox in 4
How much further was Albert Pujols homer than Lance Berkman's homer in Gm 4?
17:28 The homer.
