Another home run. The dysfunctional saga of Vinnie Vincent absolutely fascinates me. Such a great talent, but completely self-destructive. Very sad. I was also very angered by the revelation that Eric Carr's contract was terminated before his death. Brutal...and something that needs to be kept in the spotlight. I know that business is business, but he deserved better. Keep up the great work!
The beauty of have 3 year old podcasts come up on my "recommended views." Loved this episode. Thanks to David Snowden for sharing his experiences and insight and for burning Mark!
I remember reading about Helix in the book Metal On Ice about Canadian bands. Helix had a tour with Kiss during the post make up era. They went around the venue putting up their promo posters. Later Gene Simmons himself, made them take them all down. Then he lectured them like kids about who´s show it is. Any semblance of outshining them, was nipped in the bud.
Funny my grandfather was at the show in Baltimore when Mark played part of the show and Bruce played part and he was at hammer jacks for the Vinnie Vincent invasion show 🤷🏻♀️
Hit Parader was the best of those 3 because of the up and coming section , Pick Hits? , and the indie Metal Reviews. Circus bit hard because they interviewed the exact same bands every issue. Monthly updates on what girls Vince Neil screwed backstage started to wear a little thin, and the ridiculous drama between George Lynch and Don Dokken. I personally prefer Metal Mania over all of them. They covered so many bands at their demo stage
Metal Edge started off strong until they went full on Hair Metal, but at least they offered Sister publication Metal Maniacs. Metal Maniacs went downhill when they went 100% Death Metal, then Nu Metal, and of course Black Metal. I prefer Metal Mania because they didn't just dedicate the entire magazine to whatever was Metal subgenre was the popular one at the time. They dedicated just as much coverage to UK Glam band Rankelson as Brazil Proto Black Death Metal band Sarcophago
Tommy and Mark both deserve an award for quotes of the year. Tommy: "Did you sue Nelson for making rotten music?" Mark: "I had to sit through White Lion, Trixter, Britny Fox, and Nelson, can we get back to music please?" Love it!! Thanks for the good laughs as always guys!
I remember Dave and Keith from back in the day. Me and my buddies signed up for Kiss Force and we were in contact with Dave and Keith a lot. I remember we went to go see Kiss at the Centrum in Worcester, MA in the mid 80's. Cant remember which tour it was but I remember that Dave had a room at the Marriott where Kiss was staying. Me and my buddy are walking down the hallway to get to Dave's room and the guys from Queensryche come walking down the hall. They were opening for Kiss that night and they were headed to the Centrum. They were already dressed in their stage gear. I was a huge Queensryche fan too so that was pretty cool! Also met Bruce and Gene real quick in the hotel lobby.
@@davidsnowden2235 I got a audio cassette of you interviewing Mark St. John from Peter Arquette. Don't have the tape anymore but he sounded very arrogant. This was while he was forming White Tiger.
Did the guest mean that Grover Jackson actually made one the Rhoads guitars for Vinnie before Randy? I wasn't clear on what he was saying at that point.
Of course money was a problem for the Ace fan club - because “Ace ain’t back cause he told you so, Ace is back and he stole your blow” and both ace and peter should never be anything but paid employees - and he needed to make more money to buy more narcotics and I would bet all I can beg, borrow or steal that Ace sold any fucking rights he had to anything - I will never forget when Ace was pawning his Les Pauls at a Philadelphia pawn shop for pennies on the dollar- and whichever one of you guys are responsible for no new Nelson albums is a wonderful person and a genius - spoiled little bitches is 100% what those guys are... I have been listening to to you all for 2 hours and I thank you for it all - great show. Vito Bratta left the industry to care for his ailing father in Staten Island, NY.
Great guest. The best part of your show is the mix of music and the music business. I always find that stuff fascinating. As far as White Lion, they were a talented band! Vito Bratta was taking care of his elderly father who was sick I believe (Eddie Trunk interview)BTW, don’t be so dismissive, Trixter was a North Jersey band, who had a big debut. The singer is a close friend of a close friend. He has played with Def Leppard on their European tour recently, and is still performing regularly in NJ. Lives well thanks to his time in the band along with good money management.
Great interview. I used to call David once in awhile back in the day and talk KISS & Vinnie with him. Nice to get to see what he looks like. He actually forwarded a letter and some pics I took at Radio City Music Hall to Vinnie and I got a letter and autographed Creatures pic in the mail from him. Thanks David!!
The section from 20:00 onwards is a total revelation. The official line was that Mark St. John had a disease which inflamed his hands so was unable to continue playing. He appeared on the Animalise album cover and the Animalise tour programme yet never payed on the tour. I was not even aware that he did two and a half shows. He remains pretty much Kiss's forgotten guitarist.
I haven't even gotten five minutes into This one and I've GOT to write something! That Feather Pink Earrings part is GREAT; I've went back Four times and Watched it!! The face palm and Eye Roll by Mark's Wife is Priceless and I thought Tommy was gonna fall back out of his Chair Laughing!!
Guys, I can verify that what David said about Vito Bratta is 100% accurate..A close friend of mine lives on Staten Island...His cousin is NYPD....My friend's cousin pulled Vito over in his Lamborghini for speeding last year and made a deal with Vito...He said if you would stop by my cousins house and say hi, I won't write you a ticket...Vito and the cop go to my buddy's house..My buddy collects vintage guitars...He told me he handed Vito an old Les Paul guitar and he played it for a minute, gave it back to my buddy and told my buddy that he really doesn't play anymore..He still makes money on the White Lion albums, but makes most of his money as an online day trader these days...He has no desire to make music...He spends alot of time just walking around the Staten Island Mall....
It was nice to see mark take a break during this interview for a little while. During the most recent Eddie Trunk episode (164), Mark looked and sounded so nervous interviewing such a big name guest that I thought he was going to throw up his meat loaf all over the computer screen! Ha! No kidding! He looked like Dan Quayle in the 1988 VP Pres debates! Deer in headlights!
WOW! GREAT SHOW AND GREAT GUEST! So much new information I thought My head was going to explode! I don't even know where to start! When You said this was going to be a great show You were not kidding!! David was AWESOME!!! To be that young in the 80's and have so much involvement with KISS and Vinnie's band must have been incredible. Great stories! So much inside information in this episode I had to watch it twice! Thank You Michael, Tommy, and Mark again for putting on this great show week after week! GREAT EPISODE!! - Andy.
I wonder if David is referring to "Tales From the Fox"-- the movie about Eric Carr that Gene got all litigious about? David's a great guest, by the way. One of my favorite episodes. Thank you for the entertainment.
great show! I remember ordering from David back in the day. I wondered what happened to him, and now I know! Thanks. Best story was cease and desist letter from Gene. Best bust on Mark was bringing Liz back.
KISS should have just brought BRUCE in from the start on CREATURES. he obviously can play everything ACE, VINNIE and MARK could play but had the personality to fit the band. his solo on TEARS ARE FALLIN is awesome. sadly i am naive about band record label politics. learning how the makeup/reunion came about was eye opening.
At 1:39:00 mark and mike agreeing that revenge was there best non makeup album. Definitly NOT too little but DEFINITLY too late. Great great point guys. Revenge was bittersweet in that regard. Structurally sound ballads like "everything to me." Their heaviest stuff like "unholy" and "domino."
Thumbs up from me!! AEROSMITH ALERT in the 19th minute!! 'Would you look at the time?' Blue Kool-Aid Drinker. Peace out from the Southern Tip of Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada.
There is one guest I wish you guys could get, Although I'm not sure where he is and that's former manager for KISS and Peter and Ace....George Sewitt. Is he even still alive? Can you get him to do the show?
I'm curious as a fan lifelong I remember certain people who were at the old kiss conventions that used to sell BOOTLEG Kiss videos that Gene and Paul a practice they both hated yet those same people have gone on and are so connected to the band? How does that happen?
Great show as always. I enjoyed hearing a bit about Mark St. John. I always wondered what was up with his in-and-out membership. I'm kinda perplexed about why Mark enjoys trading lunches on the KISS cruise... Liz is a good looking lady...AND COOKS. How can you crave stray hamburger when you have meatloaf at home?
David was definitely one of the most entertaining guests you've had on and had a great fucking sense of comedic timing. Would be another great pinch-hitter if Lisa is not available...though he is not as easy on the eyes as she is. ;D Liz was great! Shittney Fox indeed!! LMFAO at that comment as it is spot on! Remember using the roach clips with the feathers on the end as well in the times of "Panama Red" and "Acapulco Gold". ;D Think it would be interesting for you to do a show about the other bands you liked at the time you got into KISS and how your taste in music evolved over the intervening years up to today. As you say that your listeners should think of the podcast as a discussion about KISS in a bar, we all know that those types frequently get sidetracked from time to time as discussions upon KISS will also bring up memories of the other bands we were also getting into.
I love 3 Sides of the Coin, where you get both sides of the story :-) At 22 minutes, when David quotes St. John's manager as saying that Gene & Paul were worried that Mark was showing them up on stage, I have to call BS to the manager. There probably aren't 10 rock performers in the world who are going to show Gene & Paul up onstage. If they weren't worried about Ace doing it, they weren't worried about St. John doing it. It is well known that St. John couldn't duplicate songs live, plus, the other issues.
Very good episode guys...lots of info thrown to us here...Cant remember which KISS Expo (was being held in Elgin IL late 90s I think) where Mark and Bruce were going to be there(hope I got that right been too long lol) and omething unfortunate happened at last minute....Lot of great light shed on a lot of members here....Can see the reasoning for the oustings of Vinnie and Mark a lot clearer now...Guitar Divas....while I like Vinnie and Mark guitar work(I also have that White Tiger record as well) Egos are a big killer in the music Business.....sure talent plays a big part but chemistry....and having a reality check ever so often that you are not a God helps a lot more.It is when you are delusional,or immature or egocentric is where you get in trouble in that business.Very interesting about that the makeup rights were a condition to the rejoining the band for the Reunion tour....I mean I knew they sold them..just wasn't sure how that was played out.Hey Mark....Liz is very cute humorous and seems to not take any shit lol....she is a keeper my friend....So many times I spit my coffee out in this episode...David is a great guest.Eric Carr was fired...damn truth obviously I have no connection to him and all this but I know business was business but....knowing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.....wait I have leftover meatloaf....after this show I am gonna have it(seriously)I always liked Eric...I guess I don't get it....I have heard he had some insecurity issues with the band(am I right or wrong on this ,...this is what I heard).Tommy..you made me spit out the coffee again on the "sue Nelson for making rotten music" ugh...Nelson....Shitney Fox.....lol....I like that first LP...Long Way was played a lot back then...Thank you David from saving us for 6 years for no new Nelson music lol....David was a very good guest have him back....Very smart individual .Take Care and have a great week Three Sides
I read an interview with Mark around the time of the reunion tour and he remarked how he wasn't the best person when in the band and said how looking back them booting him out was a good thing for his personal life. I would love to see video of him on stage regardless.
Great show guys, one of the top 2-3 interviews (along with Bruce and Eddie Trunk) I've heard from 3 Sides. Really, really would have liked for some follow-ups questions for David re: Eric's termination from the band to compare his reflections to those from Greg Prato's book. Otherwise, the Mark St. John segment was very interesting, just wow. Cheers.
Regarding Trixter (MCA records) opening on the "Revenge' Tour,it would have made far more sense for them to have had a credible 'street rock' type band such as Spread Eagle, who were also on MCA records. Trixter was a ridiculous choice of an opening act for a group looking to toughen up their image.
This by far was my fave episode with you guys! You guys do an awesome job and I am a fan!!!! Keep up the good work!!! Plus Mike, crazy nights is my favorite non makeup album, rock on!!!
Awesome show! David was great and I can't wait for his return. Good info all around. I did not know about Ace & Peter selling their makeup as part of the reunion. I thought they sold it off during the 80s. Love learning new KISS info.
Good point...by the mid 80's, the EVH/Randy Rhodes type player was bigger than a band. KISS was desperate to stay relevant and this is why they hired guys like Vinnie and Mark St. John, although, Vinnie definitely had songs but the guitar role was different at that time.
good interview, finally some good behind the scene stuff on more than one band or band members,, but one question? isn't Paul Stanley's book called Face The Music ? oh no looks like sombody is getting a fax or letter lol, good show👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I think it's interesting that both Gene and Paul have said many times over the years that they disliked the over playing of Mark and Vinnie yet, They hired them! Paul wrote in his book he didn't like Peter or Eric Carr's drum playing at first and yet still hired them. I liked the show it's just a shame there is only a limited amount of info / stories on Mark St. John but it does sound like he and Vinnie were very, very close in nature and bad personality traits.
But Mike Trixter was more aligned with what type of band they were then. Pantera was thrash metal and the Pantera fans would have booed Kiss off stage and the Kiss fans at that time were not going to understand Pantera. The thrash movement was much more critical of bands then the Grunge bands were. A lot of grunge bands liked Kiss, Sabbath, Zeppelin while thrash fans liked Metallica, Megadeth, Venom, heavy thrashing metal. Trixter were a band that was playing that middle of the road, (hopefully) radio friendly songs that were going to sell albums and were exactly what Kiss was looking for in an opening band..
Wow, I've seen pretty much all of the three sides episodes and I must say this might be one of the best. Any material is also always killer because of his mystery. Amazing stuff at 1:12:00 about Bill accoin, wow.
Pantera just getting ready to break????...Pantera had already released, arguably their best album, and were blowing up lol The director of the Unholy video also directed the Mouth for War video. That's why that director was hired. To make a Kiss video look like Pantera XD
Tell Snowden in regard to figuring out who got what from Peter's fan club, I never got anything from the Cat Club. To this day--nothing. I don't normally join fan clubs. I don't recall why I did. Maybe there was a specific item they offered that I wanted? Or maybe because it was such a small record label and news on Peter was so scarce, I just wanted to be kept up to date? I don't know...I did join Slaughter's fan club in the early 1990s to get the meet and greet pass. Imagine that--for the cost of a concert ticket and 20-25 bucks for a year's membership in the fan club, you could meet the band. None of this four digits for a meet and greet package and ticket.
LA Guns former road manager for 1988, Mike Corcione, told a story about Kelly Nickels/Mick Cripps/and Mike himself getting in a knock down drag out fight with the VVI roadies because VVI, Vinnie himself and the VVI manager at that time in July 1988, was treating LA Guns like complete shit amateurs. LA Guns only did a few shows(like 3 according to Mike) before they split from the tour and went home to LA because of this incident, and they were supposed to tour for like 2 months. It was presented to LA Guns as a co-headlining tour, but VVI didn't think so, mostly or all because of Vinnie
Michael Brandvold Tom Sommers Mark Cicchini. you're doing a wonderful job. But I have to ask. could you please have Eddie Kramer on he must have some funny stories. I wish you all the best from Denmark also Much respect to all your guests.
I don't get it Mark likes Aerosmith, Van Halen and Kiss but doesn't like White Lion. They are all practically the same band. WL is a VH clone and plays in the same vein as Kiss and Aerosmith. Just my opinion but I believe they are all very similar.
+drummer78 At around 1:31:33 Snowden says; "Eric Carr was fired from Kiss before he died" and also that the management had said; "whether he gets better or not, he's not coming back". Thinking that's something they would have explored more with the guest?
Yes, very odd that they passed over that revelation about Eric. They've been reticent to discuss this topic at all. Very poor job on their part. I suppose they didn't want to face up to the fact that their heroes, Gene and Paul, have openly lied to their fans for 30 years with regards to the circumstances around Eric's death.
Doesn’t anyone remember how lousy Vinny Vincent was regarding his monotone solos were? They were really lousy and very clearly tape sped - up crap. Look at the guitar virtuosos that were out there at the time - can you even name a Vinny Vincent solo that had any real tone or feel to it? The alternate picking is one thing placed in a solo here and there but he couldn’t do that at all - the bogus songwriting of that time was clear - shit... but Vinny played way too many single notes with zero tone or sound of his own and is none for nor other than a really fucked up wig or horrible make up to cover genuinely a very, very bad natural complexion - you guys are pros in the industry and you all know for sure that of all the fast shredders, there are at least 100 better players in his style... You guys just said it best, VV should only be touring with Bruce Jenner....
You guys are all awesome and made my night - thank you!
Another home run. The dysfunctional saga of Vinnie Vincent absolutely fascinates me. Such a great talent, but completely self-destructive. Very sad.
Cheers.
Is the NJ KISS EXPO cancelled? April is 3 weeks away and they havent announced it yet.
+mrblackwell939 we have not heard anything
He’s wrong about Peter signing his makeup away during the reunion. He sold it February 3rd 1987.
great
White Lion is awesome, Mark. Just sayin'. I don't snicker when you bring up your thrash metal. Don't be disrespectful.
Mike D.
+Mr. VonMeister
I would have to agree with you. They tend to re-write history from time to time.
Trixter were a band that was playing that middle of the road, (hopefully) radio friendly songs that were going to sell albums and were exactly what Kiss was looking for in an opening band..
agree Tommy it's all about great songs😁
Ron Jeremy lives!!
Is there a KISS fan club out there?
I love when they talk about Vinnie Vincent
But not smothered in secret sauce?
Bro looks 15
Is faces magazine in business ?
what was the name of the kiss video that David released that Gene got pissed off about?
mark sticking to his lent...good for him !! i am catholic as well !!!...i gave up the f word...
Dude - who in any part of the world loves Trixter? NOBODY in their right mind. WTF guys???
1:23 You obviously were not at the Birmingham NEC in May 1992. Who opened for Kiss? Non other than Pantera!
Or was it Testament?
DANKxsss 🤣
I thought Ron jeremy was in jail???
Steve Farris saved KISS,,,,LOL
Wow, Tommy's got a lot of gay jokes this week. Repression must be a horrible thing.
Michael Brandvold Tom Sommers Mark Cicchini. you're doing a wonderful job. But I have to ask. could you please have Eddie Kramer on he must have some funny stories. I wish you all the best from Denmark also Much respect to all your guests.
Double shout-out from Denmark.
Tommy the eye candy? His inner gay will love that. :-))
+hennck Uhmm Okay
Funny shit.
😀
I don't get it Mark likes Aerosmith, Van Halen and Kiss but doesn't like White Lion. They are all practically the same band. WL is a VH clone and plays in the same vein as Kiss and Aerosmith. Just my opinion but I believe they are all very similar.
Too bad these guys ruined an interesting interview by laughing hysterically at their own jokes.
Too bad nobody cares what you think.
Closing my eyes. David's voice is dead on Vinnie
So why did Eric Carr get fired? What did he do? Too nice? Too popular among the fans?
He died. Never was fired.
Gene and Paul lied about it many times over the years
What was Marks problem? Beeing disrespectful to THE best Guy in THE band! Awesome Eric Carr!
Again, BS! Nobody is being disrespected. And best is only your one opinion. Take off those rose colored glasses.
@@MichaelBrandvold he was talking about mark st john being disrespectful to eric carr about playing bass
I love listening to this interview but someone farted at the 1:44.52 mark.
Is a true story that Mark StJohn was fired because of his porn stuff? Peter Criss mentions that in his latest book.
*****
thanks for the clarification on this! cheers
+Mr. VonMeister listen to what David said. When Mark was let go his hand was no longer a problem, it was fine.
