Thornax are real?!

  • On the desert world of Bara Magna, an unusual form of ammunition has found prominent use across the wasteland. This ammo is not made, but grows naturally in the sands - the spiky and explosive Thornax Fruit. But what exactly is this fruit, and was it actually inspired by a real plant found in nature?
In this investigation, we find out.
Want to see a real-life example of exploding fruit? See this video from the RUclips channel “For Science!”:

The idea of combining flammable oil with explosive seed pods to explain the Thornax's explosive power was very well thought out! The idea that the oil is relatively harmless until the fruit ripens and dries out is also very clever. We're lucky to have members of the community like you that continue to examine the lore and story elements of the bonkle world. Have you ever considered worldbuilding yourself? You've got a knack for it.

Always remember, the difference between reality and fiction is that fiction needs to be believable.

There's also an incentive for opportunistic Agori to cultivate Thornax in a barren wasteland, monopolizing important oases and resource hotspots for mass producing them (as much as one can on a desert planet). Over a hundred thousand years, artificial selection of Thornax plants could yield higher detonating power if that's one trait that's being prioritized by the farmer.

Actually that is a great point.

Eucalyptus trees also employ highly flammable oils in their lifecycle as the fire their oils produce are a necessary component to their seeding cycle. The main difference is eucalyptus oil isn't contained within the fruit but is secreted from the leaves and bark to form a dangerous, combustible gas cloud around the plant.

I like the idea you gave that the reason why the Thornax fruit is so hazardous is because it's able to spread its seeds far enough away that they aren't competing for resources. This especially works in the lore of Bara Magna, since resources are so scarce. You can imagine the fruit dropping, exploding upon hitting the ground, and shooting the seeds out in the distance (I'm assuming the seeds would be in the spikes). Perhaps more thought was put into the fruit's existence in BIONICLE than we thought!

Hurray! Thanks for talking about the exploding fruit.
Here’s another big question to ponder:
How does currency work in the Bionicle universe? Is there a currency? How is it calculated?

@@nicholaslewis862There was also general “coins” introduced with a fan submitted serial story involving the leader of the Skakdi. Widgets seem to be unique to Matoran, while other races/cultures/etc have other methods of currency

This video simply reminded of a Toa of Green I used to play in the BZPRPG who used Madu Cabolo like C4 for demolition.
God I had fun with that character especially all the times I researched various plants to try and come up with creative, yet potentially realistic crossbreeds of Flora.

I've got an idea. The black bands around the thornax could be some type of material added by the agori/glatorians which sparks easily. When fired using the launcher, the two prongs would scrape either side, causing the band to spark and ignite the oils on the fruit. This could also explain the volatility of more overripened fruits; sometimes, it explodes on impact, as desired, while sometimes, there might be enough oil on the surface to explode in your face. My guess is that thornax harvesting and processing is an art in similar vein to disc making.

The sycamore tree seed pods are hard and spiky, and if broken the seeds rapidly spread and cause severe iriitation on skin contact. Perfect ammo for a slingshot.

Dunno if you looked into this or not, but you may have also accidentally explained why thornax stew tastes so bad too. Looking up the plants you described I found that the fruit of the sandbox tree tastes starchy while the oils on the Burning Bush taste acrid when eaten, but smells like lemons, so maybe the reaosn why overripe thornax are eaten by the Vorox is because when it's overripe the flavor of the oils changes and becomes more like how it smells, resulting in a more paletable starchy-lemon taste.
