Thanks for watching!
On my way to the desert, I was camping near the great smokies and the night time temps were 18⁰. I used my Mr Buddy but it sucked down propane to keep up. What ended up saving my butt was my winter sleeping bag with my 12V heating blanket inside. The blanket took very little power from my jackery 1000. Now that I'm in warmer temps I don't need either lol
I've also heard that the heated mattress pads work well. The secret is what you said: Go where it isn't so cold! ~ Kir (and Ron)
Anias, that's a good thought and glad it worked for you. I'm going to test one of those out soon. Safe travels!
Me too. I found a small electric blanket in the sleeping bag worked great for hours.
I happily camp in temps as low as -15F and I do it by sleeping ON my heated blanked. I rarely even need to put it on past medium heat. 18F is sleeping bag in shorts and a t-shirt weather😂
I've got a 200/400 watt ceramic heater. I find it's only useful when plugged into campground power to reduce condensation. It will not warm a small space space like a mini van or my insulated pickup truck when near freezing temperatures. What does safely work is Coleman type lanterns. I've a tiny one and it is great to warm the area before I get out of my sleeping bag and dress. The lantern I have is a Primus Micron lantern. It's smaller than a typical light bulb but produces as much light and heat as the tradition Coleman lantern. Below 0 degrees Fahrenheit I store the gas canister in the bottom of my sleeping bag.
what brand 200/400 Watt heater do you have?
@@saltpepper1894 It's a Honeywell HCE100 HeatBud® Personal Ceramic Heater. I usually have it under my work desk because the desktop is often cold.
It's great to see you doing well Kevin !! What I did works for me but might not work for everyone I found a heated mattress sheet twin size it does not have an automatic shut off which makes it very nice and it only draws 20 watts on low... The heating element is almost full body length except for your head area so even your feet stay warm you lay on top of it of course the heat just rises and retains underneath your blankets or sleeping bag... The downside is liquids inside your van will freeze for instance so far I have not had a problem with condensation but I suppose ice on the inside of the windshield could be a problem also... you can operate this heated sheet off the smallest battery I have a goal zero 400... The rest of your van will be cold but your bed and your body will be toasty... It has the standard house plug which might be a downside but I found it at a discount store for $15
Have you seen anything similar online?
I bought some electric plug in timers some time ago for various things like keeping the water iceless for the critters to drink water outside and water dish, grow lights on in my basement for plants and found them very useful. I plan on getting a rv and will get a few more for timing my air conditioner. Something to consider investing in.
Oh... Heated body warmer works well too off the little power banks 🙂
This is very helpful and saved me a lot of headache thank you man!
Thanks for this detailed explanation. This information was exactly what I was looking for
Another great video. I am gonna try my campstove & a pot of water 🤞 Heat up the van -turn off the flame & bundle up 🙏
If you use propane get used to putting on damp clothes in the morning, in fact having everything in your van damp and cold 😢
Stephen, THAT (dampness/moisture) certainly is a downside when using propane heat indoors. More soon....safe travels!
I have a condo but the commute is awful so I'm looking into converting a minivan into a camper and spending 2 to 4 nights a week in the minivan/comming back to my condo on the weekend. Western Washington doesn't get really cold but with winter temperatures in the 30's and 40's I still need some kind of reliable heat source. Stealth is important because I will often be parking the mini-van in residential neighborhoods near work. I don't want to put solar pannels on my roof because it make the minivan much less stealthy and I don't rely on propane heaters because I'm afraid off carbon monoxide poisoning. So far the best solution I have come up with is a 200 amp hour deep cycle battery bank + 1000 watt inverter + diesel heater. To make the diesel heater safe I need to drill a hole in the bottom of the van for the exaust tube and have a working Carbon Monoxide detector in the minvan at all times. I'm thinking this big a battery bank will allow me to run the diesel heater 10-15 hours a day, run a mini-fridge all week, use a small TV/laptop 2-4 hours a day and use a microwave for a few minutes each day to re-heat leftovers and that is all I really need. I can re-charge the batteries at the condo over the weekend. Unfortunately this is not a cheap solution the batteries and inverter will likely cost $1000 to $1500.
Great info! The heated blanket definitely doesn’t work!
Pink Vintage, glad you found the Jackery vid useful to you. More van/travel stuff soon...safe travels!
This is really helpful. Actually I have a use case where the Amazon heater and a Jackery 500 will work for me. I work in my van during the day parking at state parks in western Washington where our winter daytime temps are 35-45. I'm running the van just to heat up the interior periodically. I'm going to give the ceramic heater a try and see if it keeps me warm enough to keep working. Thank you again.
I think trying to run a ceramic heater (even on it's lowest setting) is going to be hard with a Jackery 500 - I'd estimate that you'd get about 45 minutes of use before draining the Jackery. Let me know if you end up with different results. More soon...safe travels!
Yeah, them 12V blanket are garbage! It doesn't stay plugged in at night if you toss and turn a lot. It is best to wear layered clothes and beanie on your head. Then sleep inside a layered sleeping bags (a thin one and a thick one). I was okay in 29° temperature in Montana.
I find they are better if you lay on top of them.
Great great video. All van people thank you.
Thank you for the kind words, micjakes1 - I'm glad you found the Jackery (running a heater) video useful to you. More soon...safe travels!
The other factor for these portable power stations like Jackery and Goal Zero is startup watts. Most heaters have different startup and running power needs. For instance, the Lasko My Heat 200W heater uses 240W start up and 200W running. The Jackery 500 has a surge ability to handle 1000W for a few seconds. If the start wattage is greater than 500W and below 1000W and the running watts are 500W or less the Jackery can power the device if the start up is only a few seconds. If start up was longer than a few seconds in this scenario, the Jackery will shut down.
What is the longest amount of hours it could power a space heater and which jackery could power a space heater for 15 continuous hours?
I can't give you a specific answer but can tell you how to figure it out. The number of hours a space heater will run depends on the wattage draw, how long the heater draws that amount of power, and the power available from the power station. If the heater has a thermostat and shuts down or draws a lower watt setting as the space is heated the run time changes. To calculate the runtime take the total wattage of the power station times 0.85 divided by the wattage draw of the heater when running. Most power stations have approximately 85% usable power thus the 0.85 adjustment. An example where the heater is 500 watt, runs continuously, and using a Jackery 500 the calculation would be 500 watt Jackery * 0.85 usable power / 500 watt heater = 0.85 hours or 51 minutes.@@whatitisnt.
Ok ...kind of simplistic...but I use two hot waterbottles, down quilt and woolly hat 😁
Hey, as long as you've found what works for you on cold nights in the van, that's all that matters! We're all constantly learning from each other. More soon....safe travels!
You have done it again giving good reviews.
I'm going to pick up a little Hulk Heater from a store thus morning, and will try to plug it into my Jackery. They're very small plug- in wall devices that supposedly hear a room, so we'll see if it works.
How’s that work out for you?
woohoo! Love it! you created amazing work.;)
Glad you enjoyed that vid. More good stuff soon...safe travels!
Regular 110v electric blankets are a better choice, even though you have to run them on an inverter. They run much longer than small electric heaters.
I think so, too...and I'm going to try to do some tests of different versions of these things soon... Merry Chirtmas and safe travels!
I tell people this, you can run a heating blanket for many many hours it can save your life in a car if you get stuck in a blizzard OR just use it at home if power goes out and it cold in the home.
@@banmagathanks for your comment, which heating blankets would you prefer?
@@banmagayeah which ones?
I recently did an overnight in a campground in northern Ma where it got down to 36*F and I brought my simple bathroom heater and an extension cord. Had the most fun and kept warm enough with just blankets off of the bed and appropriate clothing. Not sure I would have been "my old sweet self " without a heat source though , 36* is just too cold for me. The diesel heater seems to be the safest overnight heating solution when plugging in is not an option.
I’m going to be living in my small SUV this winter in the Midwest. Hopefully I figure something out.
Truth, hope things are going well for you if you're still traveling in the SUV, and hope some of the other van/travel stuff I put out is useful to you. Safe travels!
Thanks for the information.
Thanks, James. Glad you found the van/heating video useful to you, and I'll be rolling out more van/travel (and winter camping) stuff soon. Safe travels!
Great information 👍🏼
Magic ❤
I saw a video where they sit up a small tent inside a minivan to contain the body heat better. Thought that was a great idea. My tent tends to be warmer than the outside.
That's interesting...but I don't think I'd want a smaller space to try to spend the night!
Yep I use my backpacking bivy bag over my sleep system if it is really cold and I am solo traveling. I have less space already because if I am solo I am in a Jeep Patriot. If my husband is along and it is getting into the teens, we will be in a hotel or motel... If you pee before you go to bed. Put on dry base layer, hat and socks or down booties and eat a snack before bed you should be comfortable to below 0*F. Below that you may need a mylar space blanket under and around you, but not over you. Space blankets don't breathe and so the moisture your body buts out can't move through your blankets. The moisture will wet out your insulating layers and may even freeze, making you a popsicle.
I think they may be those short legged cots with a tent that goes over it. Might work if there is enough head room for it like a regular sized cargo van, Transit Connect or a PMC mini van. Doubt a regular minivan would have enough room.
Very helpful video!
Thanks, Martin - glad you enjoyed the Jackery comparison video. More soon...safe travels!
Thanks. I am in Québec, so very cold. My plan is to head west or south for the winters, but I would like to try a winter night in my minivan to see how I do. I have equiped myself with down booties, a down hood, down sleeping bag and wool blanket so perhaps I would be ok. Thanks for the info.
TJ Marie , also pick up a good pair of wool socks, also (you may have to go up a shoe or boot size because of their thickness) but they make a huge difference. Sounds like you have some good stuff to deal with the cold.
Wool socks are a great idea, but have them be tomorrow’s clean socks (or socks just for sleeping in) because the ones you wore all day hold the moisture from your feet sweeting, which could freeze at night camping in cold weather. At least that’s what my Girl Scout troop leader told us.
So having the jackery 240 will basically do almost nothing for me! Ugh....
Thank you for the information! I need a heater for camping, I'll think about propane...
Jade, glad you found the "van heat options" video useful to you. More soon...safe travels!
honeywell has a lil one that 300 watt low setting
Interesting..I'd not seen one with a little heater with a setting as low as 300w. Safe travels!
What about a good sleeping bag? We used to tent camp in the winter both in Connecticut and in Shenandoah National Park without any sort of heaters.
Ron, you are so right that a good sleeping bag means a lot, as does headgear and some good wool socks. It all depends on the level of comfort (or discomfort) a person can handle and still enjoy themselves. More soon...safe travels!
My son had a Buddy heater in his van and his carbon monoxide detector went off.
Buddy heater is propane this is a ceramic heater totally different
I’m guessing you would need 3k worth of solar to run a decent heater on low setting over night while you sleep. Not cheap
Can someone assist me please… I am looking for mini portable battery operated heater… I do not want any wires, only battery running.. My bus don’t have good heating..
The cost of the battery power required to run even a small electric heater all night is going to be one to three grand, which is why most of us are using some type of propane heat in our vans. I'm going to have a very in-depth video up on this shortly. Hope you find some of my other stuff useful to you also.
@@BudgetTravelGuy Thank you for ur reply.. I am looking for a small mini wireless portable battery operated heated.. With that I can put it in my bag n take it to work.. Our London buses are rubbish, the heating don’t work most of the time..
I'm hoping a down comforter and a hot water bottle will be enough to keep me warm through the night.
Down makes a difference, Wendy. Also having something on your head and some good wool socks, like these ( amzn.to/3qehgUx ) make a world of difference in comfort. I'll also have a vid out on some other ways to stay warm soon. Safe travels!
I also like Sherpa lined socks
Hey kevin, why not run 500w or 750w ceramic heater on a 50ah lithium battery amazons choice 189.00 and 1000 watt bestek inverter with 750 watt heater with tip over/ overheat pertection and thermostat and put in a roof vent or atleast window visors? I got 750w is equal to about 6amps on the good old google search, which would mean you could run 7 hours at around 42 to 45 ah, if you can afford a 100ah even better but it seems a 50ah would get you by, right? plus you dont have to constantly run it my van stays above 50F from 85F for 3 hours in 36 degree weather its insulated okay i guess. So you wouldnt have to continuously run it if your vented and insulated well right ? Maybe im missing something im no expert just trying to solve a problem and if im right it potentially could be solved for me for about 330.00.
Fitguy...this stuff can be a bit confusing, eh? For a quick conversion, a 12volt 50amp hour battery would equal 600watt hours. So, you could run a 100 watt lightbulb for about six hours. A 500 watt heater would run for a little over an hour of total use before the battery was completely drained. (So, even if it only ran half of the time, you'd drain the battery in about 2 hours.) Hope this helps clarify things a bit.
@@BudgetTravelGuy Wow, that helped alot. I was having such a hard time conceptualizing the Amps and Watts and Time. It clicked as soon as I read your post. Thank you.
Which jackery could support 1650 watt space heater for 10 continuous hours?
