  • I have tested Spaz Stix Chrome before and I have tested every clear coat I use over it but, I have not tested the Spaz Stix Clear Coat. It's always disappointing when you Chrome a hand made lure only to have it turn dull and grey after you clear coat. I have found work-arounds that help keep the chrome shine but, I have not tried the Spaz Stix clear. If you like to paint lures and use chrome finishes this video will interest you.

    Have you tried Alclad paint as they do an amazing chrome finish. You have to spray it black with their gloss undercoat and then you get the mirror finish. I would epoxy them with Devcon 2 but it would dull the finish as it reacts with the metallic paint. I then found out that Alclad also did a clear coat which is water based so I tried that and gave the lure 2 coats. When it dried I then put on the epoxy and no reaction and it still keeps the mirror finish. I don't work for them by the way but I do love their metallic paints which are in many colours. It's pretty thin too so easy to airbrush on and I clean the gun with acetone which is nail varnish remover.
    I know you like your gold colour and they do an amazing selection of them and one of them is an exact match for the Megabass Kinkuro lure.
    They are pretty cheap too and a little bit goes a very long way.
    Check out this guy using the stuff on a Storm Troopers helmet.

    Well, you find the way things work after discovering (most) of the ways that don't - that has been my experience anyway LOL! Thanks for sharing your experience with these products - frustrating but fun anyway :-) Seems counter intuitive to paint a reflective surface over black - you would figure that white would be better. That silver plate finish is awesome but costs and setup are a bit beyond my current level of commitment to DIY lure making - I am more at the aluminum finish and metal foil level at the moment. Cheers and take care!

    As a model car builder I find the spaz stix chrome to be really great. Definitely the smoothest you can prep the plastic like glass before even spraying on your black base is crucial! Also after spraying on my black base I still spray on Pledge to give an extra shiny base to it. I found this helps the spaz stix adhere better. One thing also I noticed is you said you were spraying the Pledge at 30 psi, usually we spray around 10 psi for Pledge how thin it is. Any higher it runs a lot and doesn't seem to dry that well. Gravity feed airbrushes btw with that. But I found Pledge still keeps a good mirror shine on the spaz stix if sprayed in thin coats. Maybe a little more playing around with pressure and coats you might find that right medium. I was a little apprehensive too about trying their gloss clear for the chrome. I might go ahead and pick some up still and experiment. I really like how your lures came out they look amazing! Keep up the good work!

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  4 года назад +1

      I played around with the pressure on the gun and found that if I got lower than 25psi or so the floor wax would spatter. It's probably the difference in guns. Truth be told the very best finish I have found comes from dipping the item in the pledge and not spraying.
      Thanks so much for watching and sharing your knowledge....

    • @RekEighty
      @RekEighty 4 года назад +1

      @@EngineeredAngler I'm going to experiment as well with dipping in pledge to see if I can get some different results. I always like to try other ways out when it comes to Spaz Stix. Yeah usually my guns are .3 or .2 mm needles & nozzles and found between 10 or 15 psi is usually good for pledge. Interestingly, I've also found using a very soft fine hair brush with the spaz stick can give the same mirror finish for smaller parts or trim pieces. Larger pieces still needs ti be sprayed. I purchased the Spaz Stix clear so I'll be experimenting with that as well. Maybe dipping like pledge might give a result close to pledge.

      @@EngineeredAngler Update! So I've done a lot of experimenting with the Spaz Stix Clear since I got it in and had time to play with it. First off, yeah it's not worth a spit in any of it's use for Mirror Chrome. I've spray it light dusting coats, medium coats and heavy coats. I've even dipped it like Future and no matter what I did.. it took the shine away and hazed it up. I even played with air pressure settings and everything was the same result. Good old faithful Future did the job sprayed on or dipped. One thing to note, I have been playing around with Molotow Liquid Chrome paint pen I got at Hobby Lobby, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed by it. You can buy refill's for it online but it's a little pricey but gives a very nice chrome finish. The thing with it is, you have to let it really dry for a good few days before touching it. It will get fingerprints or smear up if you try to touch too soon. But I have to say, if you haven't tried it out you might want to check it out. The pens are paint pens you have to press the nub to get the paint flowing. But I ended up taking the pen apart and harvest the paint out to airbrush. PSI will vary gun to gun, but I found around 20 to 30 worked good. I also found with it, a heavier coat than how we would spray on Spaz Stix worked best. Check it out if you get a chance.

    I've used this stuff for model cars in the past because it really is a nice looking chrome. Unfortunately i haven't found any good way to clear coat it either. From what i understand the spaz-stix is made for clear lexan plastic RC car bodies. It is meant to be sprayed backwards. You're supposed to spray the chrome on the inside of the clear body then spray a black on that followed by the clear to protect it from the inside. The clear plastic is what protects it from the outside.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  4 года назад +1

      You're right, I realised that it was meant to be used that way after reading Q&A on their website. The krylon looking-glass is the same way. I have still been able to get some nice metalic finishes using it, not perfect, but nice.

    My interest in pinewood derby cars is about as far from your passion for lures as we can get, yet we have one problem in common: How to clear coat Spaz Stix Mirror Chrome without dully the finish. After testing many clear coat options, the one that's worked the best for me was Devcon 5-Minute epoxy. It doesn't raise the aluminum grains in the paint at all, which is the reason clears dull the finish. The problem is that the epoxy is far too thick. If it could be thinned, it might make a good clear for Mirror Chrome.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  3 года назад

      The best thing to do is to put a high gloss clear over the black. This way you can apply multiple coats and if needed polish it to a super high gloss. This gives you a great surface to apply the spaz and keeps it from contacting the paint.

    Two things that you are doing wrong is not giving the chrome paint enough time to dry and allow the solvents to evaporate off. And you're spraying a too-heavy coat of the clear causing the chrome to "lift" and ruin the reflective surface.

      That's good to know...I really thought there was no way to keep the reflective finish. I have done an experiment where I left the finish without any clear coat in a safe place. But it still went grey after a few weeks. Any insight?

    Just watched this. Reason it failed everything you did was wrong. All of it. You followed no directions f4om the start. Didn't even use the black backer made for it. If your going to demo something then tell people it's no good you should follow directions!!

      I've been playing with this stuff for years...even the manufacturer admits it always dulls out when you clear coat it. Notice how the chrome was near perfect even without the black base..??? so why black base? The issue is not getting an initial chrome finish the problem is keeping it when you clear coat it. Try it yourself...the best you will get is a semi-polished aluminum type finish. Frustrating for all. Totally get your point about the directions...
