One thing I just love about Fowler is how competent and cunning he is combined with his ability to get his own hands dirty. Many of the other Japanese villains just assume he is nothing more than a white hedonistic monster while underestimating just how dangerous and driven he is.
I randomly started watching this show flipping through Netflix and had no idea the treat I was in for. It was fantastic and the visuals were so unique and interesting. Finally, a mature cartoon with good writing AND style!!
Same! I was scrolling through Netlfix for something animated to watch, started BES, and had to binge it, my mind was blown by the quality of this show!
I discovered it here on RUclips. As a fan of animation I thought it looked interesting and favorited it to come back to it later. Sooo glad I saw the entire thing on my tv instead of on my iPad!
Seriously, Blue Eye Samurai is one of the best things to come out of this year. Hell, it’s one of the best animated projects I’ve seen in years. Just glorious. As one of the people who recommended it to you, I’m so glad you picked it up!
i could not believe mizu's husband fumbled her that badly. if i had a hot wife who could kick my ass, that would just make me fall in love with her more. (i know, the times and perspectives were different, but come on man. he asked for that fight.)
Great review dude. Picking up on your point about the title, i think this was always intended to span multiple seasons. As such i think one of it's main themes will be mizu's journey from single minded assassin to a more thoughtful & honourable samurai. I think she will become the blue eye samurai rather than starts out being one. Thanks for a great vid mason.
I was on RUclips when I saw the thumbnail for the first epsidoe and my immediate thought was "Oh no, I'm going to like this aren't I? I'm dangerously close to not getting any sleep tonight, huh?" And yes, it goes SO hard. Last time a show went this hard was probably Arcane.
I'm so happy you're reviewing Blue Eye Samurai! I binged the entire season in one day. The plot and character writing are outstanding! And the animation, breathtaking! Haven't been so enthralled by a series since Arcane. Netflix has been crushing it with their animated series in the past few years (provided they don't get unjustly cancelled)

I think Netflix's main problem is that they don't promote their animated shows enough. Then they say, "Well, it's not popular," when they didn't even do the bare minimum to advertise them. The creators of Blue Eye Samurai said they planned on 4 seasons, I hope it gets all 4 so it can have a cohesive story with a proper ending

I really hope it does. I'm so worried they're going to lose the magic in the next season, either by going too woke, mishandling mizu's character, or losing the plot.
FWIW, IMO, it is incredibly obvious Mizu's husband sold her out and not her "mother" in Ep 5. I mean, the story is reflected in the bunraku play and the whole point is it is the betrayal of love that creates the Onryo, not the betrayal of a parental figure. This show deserved an Emmy for Ep 5 all by itself. The reflection of the story in the bunraku, the fact Mizu is *both* the Ronin and the Bride, and all the absolutely masterfully directed combat... it is just brilliant.
I got this randomly recomended because i watched blue eye samurai AMV's and i'm really glad it got recomended! If you like this style of animation and the level of writing i recomend arcane too. Its from another french animation studio. Its not about samurai but it fals in the category of adult animation that takes itself seriously. Anyway this was a great watch and i'm gonna check out your channel!
watched the series when i saw this review pop up because it was the second time i've heard of it so i said "okay! what IS this!" and wanted to go in spoiler-free. such a stunning watch and i can't wait for season 2. mizu is such a great character that you want to follow as they go on their journey because it really feels like it could go anywhere
Great video! Another small correction. Edo only burns indirectly as a result of Fowler’s plot. It’s a direct result of the candle Mizu throws when trying to prevent Fowler’s escape. Fowler explicitly calls her attention to this.
Can't wait to see what you have planned for this year! To me you are an underrated gem in the sea of content here on RUclips and you honestly deserve more love and attention.
I binge watched BES series 5 times, it is that good. Only 2 other movies I’ve done that. I’ve watched two movies at least 5 times in the theater, the original Star Wars and the original Matrix.
Thank goodness more and more and more people are finding out about this gem, another masterpiece of animation coming from Netflix, I binged this in 2 days and was blow away, amazing story, fantastic, flawed and complex characters, incredible mind blowing bloody action, gorgeous and breathtaking animation, sex, nudity, is the full package, love it, watching twice and can't wait for season 2. Also hope you recommendation list have SCAVENGERS REIGN there, if not please if you read this, give that a change, trust me you would not regret it.

The needle drops and the snow rendering are the only complaints you can have ab this show. Which is insane. It's a perfect 10/10 show it's first season.
I'm currently enjoying the anime Mashle, it's basically if you put rock lee into the world of Harry Potter and it's one of the funniest shows I've seen. It's second season just came out at the start of this year.
@@Traffydrhart I think what makes characters like this from avatar, the last Airbender, blue-eyed, samurai, etc. is that they are written as characters with motivations, goals, flaws, and struggles that can be relatable and or compelling to everyone

She's literally unstoppable because the plot armour is thicker than anything and is over-powered in every way, and she attacks people for calling her names while she let her mother die and just focuses on revenge. It's pure trash at best.
Hard like a solid piece of trash clunking into a garbage can. A content creator liking this lame excuse for a show is an immediate red flag. There are SO MANY glaring issues with the writing, characters, and action that I find it extremely hard to believe anyone legitimately enjoyed it. This show has to be proof a fad can be formed around anything. Disappointing.
@@hestia00 Don't get me started. First off, I didn't go into to the show to hate it. I love female protagonists, I love revenge tales, I love action. I liked the scenes with Mizu and the blacksmith, the whole show should've stayed there. Where it went wrong is the pointless side plots, making Mizu overpowered, the klunky fight scenes, and the useless flashbacks. I'm okay with Mizu being strong, but her skills come from nowhere, and the flashbacks don't explain anything. She watched other swordsmen then trained a bit with husband guy, but that doesn't explain her "unorthodox" style or how it was developed, she can just hit a guys tooth out of midair into another guys eye just because. I'd also be okay with the action being over the top if it wasn't trying to be a realistic, gritty take on historic japan, they screwed up the tone. From what we know, she should have been an underdog, having to use a lot of underhanded tricks, and possibly tools that she learned to make from the blacksmith. Instead we have the ridiculous rock handstand thing she used to kill the totally elite bad guy squad she killed in one episode. Where are the stakes if she's so powerful and just pull a technique out of her *you know* and just win? I could go off on a lot of side tangents, like overall it's pretty bog standard when it comes to revenge stories, how handless guy adds nothing to anything, how it seems to hate men, but all in all it's just poorly done writing-wise. I have zero clue why it's so liked outside of the basic "female protag cool" or "it's dark so that means it's good".
It's just trash dude. I think Bluey has the most plot armour I've ever seen. And that's combined with all the men being as useless as disney's storm-troopers. All these reviews stink.

Try "Lone Wolf and Cub" the original manga. I think it is it's actual biggest influence, the action and motive of the character.

Blue Eye Samurai feels like the show that really affirms your “I love animation” video. Why animation is so damn good and the potentials it can reach.

This series proved that you can get away with a flawed and almost villain-like protagonist as long as they have strong goals and motivations.
