I’m glad more people are talking about the issues with “Live action” remakes. It makes me so sad that people say animation is “only for children” and by making it hyper realistic and darker makes it “adult”. Animation brings so much life and personality to the characters since we can suspend our disbelief much easier which allows creativity to really shine. If everything has to be “realistic” then the movements have to reflect that visual choice since attempting to recreate the larger expressive movements can look uncanny. Meaning they have to reign in the performance thus zapping the life from the previously expressive characters.
The only good “live action remake” i can think of is 101 Dalmatians (1996) even though it was not critically well received. It felt separate enough from the animated original to be enjoyable, and they used REAL DOGS! I am appalled and disgusted by the idea of a “real” Lilo & Stitch, that movie is so special to so many people, and now its being tossed aside for a “better” version. Why can’t Disney just rerelease their classic animated movies back to theaters? Remember when they used to do that? Wouldn’t that be more cost effective and get more young eyes on “old” movies for the longevity of those IPs?
Look, as a diehard Dragons fan.. I want to like this. The costume designs look incredible, the settings are amazing, seeing Gerard Butler step out of the screen and become so real, that just all seems so promising. But.. They're remaking the movie shot for shot, at least in the trailer. The shot of Stoick raising his axe and having a fireball shot over his head into the cave set my expectations in the worst way. DuBlois said he loved the world and wanted to go back to it, but there has to be a different way to revisit the world that doesn't just.. recycle the same film. Hell, make it a musical for all I care! Do *something* unique! If we're going to tell this story again, tell it in a new way. Put us in Astrid or Toothless' shoes, show us the story from someone else's perspective other than Hiccup's. I would _much_ rather see them fumble something new and charming than see them do 'well' a tired repeat. I wish we could have this conversation on a wider scale without tripping out the gate just trying to get past the "But Astrid Blonde" argument
This!! I'll take a million "Maleficent"s and "Cruella"s over more goddamn shot for shot remakes. Give us new characters, give us a new twist, STOP MAKING THE SAME MOVIE BUT MORE EXPRESSIONLESS AND DESATURATED
@@pigeontoes5421omg this just made me think, give us a Valka prequel! Show her as a young viking, how she bonded with Cloudjumper after being taken from Berk, how she earned the trust of the bewilderbeast and all the other dragons! You could even lead right into the second movie, have it end with her hearing about Drago and heading out to find him! There's so many options!!
I don't think I've heard of anyone who is ever excited about 'live action' remakes. My best friend didn't grow up with Disney but when we started watching all the movies together she didn't want to watch any of the live action versions. When I told her that Moana was getting a live action remake and a sequel she was so confused as to why "That movie isn't that old...?"
Good points all but I can explain it I think. Sometimes when you love a story, you burn yourself out on it. You still love it, but when you've watched or read it 1000x times, you just need it presented in a different way to squeeze more of the juice out. It's the same story mostly but with either different visuals or different actions to present a few surprises. It's familiar and comfortable but also "new", now.
@@theblacklagoon Trust me, that's not where he's coming from. He's just gushing about his love of a story ( stories in general ) as an original work of art, as it was originally transmitted from creator to observer. And there is something vaguely sacred about that if you think about it. Maybe.
I agree, animation is an amzing medium. So people need to stop supporting this form of creative bankruptcy. Calling it liva action is joke when most of was filmed with green screen and cgi.
i just had the funniest thought when u brought up lion king (2019) just being “fancier” animation. what if they did a live action lion king with humans. and just called it the hamlet king. (that’s a stupid title but i just wanted to bring hamlet back into it)
Don't feel bad I had camera troubles too. But this topic I am down the middle with this topic I love to see people take a story regardless of being book TV show animation what have you. and putting a great twist with it Best example is One Piece getting the Netflix show that is faithful and emotional but at the same time doesn't disrespect the art of the original Live action can work but the problem with Disney is that They always miss the mark on why there story's work in the first place
Genuinely you see more emotion and detail in the OG HTTYD movie than that live remake trailer. And again, WHO ASKED FOR A LIVE REMAKE??? I'm so tired of the live remake trend they're going down because it's just tarnishing a beloved film. I feel like Disney could instead touch on their older films like Atlantis or Treasure Planet or Black Cauldron...Films that are classics amoung fans that could be brought out for a new generation.
They're likely to make more money on a popular franchise. I heard from Jesterbell that the "How To Train Your Dragon" remake is to promote an upcoming theme park attraction.
If the slow motion incident ever happens again, you can try to change the footage speed to 2X (if it normally films at 30 fps and the slow motion films at 60) and pretend it never happened 😅
I think these movies can be done well, but only if they bring something substantially new to the material. Like you, I’m very much opposed to the mentality that making them live action somehow ages them up or improves upon it by default, and I think it’s made all the worse when they don’t even take any risks with the material. Not every change works and plenty of live action Disney movies are a testament to those failures, but at least they tried.
There's no way an HTTYD movie could truly become live action, unless they mainly used intricate puppets/animatronics, or they somehow managed to train different pet lizards and shoot in miniature. They should stop milking the franchise dry already. On another note, I cackled like a lunatic when Mister Krabs came out of nowhere with that "Money."
God these movies annoy me. It started okay enough with Maleficent being a very different take on the same story, and Alice in Wonderland just straight up not being a remake despite sharing the same title. But those were the only two I ever watched. Can't say I particularly enjoyed them or have any sort of attachment to them but I tolerate their existence. But I've stopped watching those right after. I had my fill then. I didn't even ever feel the need to rewatch those. And now they have long since given up on giving these movies a unique spin that I wonder if you're gonna look up movies like Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast etc. and both versions pop up, why would you ever click on the remakes if the better originals are right there? With cases like Pinocchio or Lady and the Tramp the remakes didn't even get theatrical releases, making those even more unnecessary and forgotten by society for the same reason. If they're only on Disney+, why not just click on the originals that are right there? I feel bad for the lids whose first exposures to these stories are the remakes their parents took them to to the theater. Kids deserve better entertainment. And in the case of these remakes, better versions of these movies are right there, readily available. There's no need to watch any of these live action demakes.
It's pretty sad how the majority of the new generation is growing with shitty remakes instead of the fantastic originals, they have already mush brains today, they don't need more rot
"no unique creative sources made with the source material". Oh my God, don't let the Wheel of Time or Conan Fans hear you list that as a negative. Their heads will explode and create a mess!
Can someone pls make a video of "Why Anime is superiorly better then live action" they keep comparing cartoons against live actions but why not Anime aka the reason why Animation is better
Anime is animation, it literally is just the Japanese word for "animation". You can talk about the influence Japanese studios have or what you like about Eastern vs Western animation, but anime in and of itself is not "the reason" animation is a better medium than live action. Tbh I don't even believe animation is _always_ superior, different stories fit different mediums, the main argument being made is that both are equally valid and important artforms
Mason… I highly disagree with you on Lion King. I actually love animation. Was excited for Lion King 2019 as an original Lion King fan (life long at that). Mufasa looks great. Im going to be seated.
Understand and agree with your points. But at the same time, I don’t think it’s that big a deal. While not as good as the originals, I appreciate the experience of seeing a version of them on the big screen since it’s rare for the originals themselves to be re-released on the big screen. I never saw the original How to Train Your Dragon when it came out so this will be the first big-screen experience of a version of it for me. And most don’t treat movies as seriously as people like us so it’s not really surprising that remakes of beloved movies make a lot of money since they want to have a good time at the theater with something they are fond of. But I do agree that the idea of remakes being the legitimate version since they are live-action is ridiculous.
Why is seeing a movie in the theater that important to u? To the point u settle for an inferior version rather than just watching the actual movie comfortable at home with cheaper snax and maybe some friends. I don't get it.
@@ItsAllNunya Because I like the theater experience in general with the bigger screen and sound. I also like to watch new movies critically to decide what it did good and what it did bad. I always watch the original at home before I go see the remake.

Dreamworks is in a partnership with Disney. Its not surprising they would start to take after them. Waiting for the buyout tbh.
It’s not the animation division that’s with Disney, Universal is.
