- Betty Lynn died on October 16, 2021. The actress, who starred as Thelma Lou on the classic TV show, "The Andy Griffith Show", was 95 years old at the time of her passing. Here are my memories of this wonderful entertainer. Rest in Peace, Betty Lynn!

I met Betty Lynn in 2015 at the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, North Carolina. When I met her I said, "thank you for your service to our country." She teared up, "no one has said that to me." Betty Lynn performed in the USO during World War II. She sang and visited American soldiers in the China Burma India theater. She is believed to be the only American woman on the Burma road. We'll never know the impact her smiling face, cheerful voice and bright eyes had on the battle hardened men, exhausted and depleted in this forgotten corner of the world. May God bless the memory of her employing talent to selflessly serve others.

I met her in 2007 at the Andy Griffith playhouse during Mayberry Days. I said “Betty Lynn! Thelma Lou! I love you!” She was so nice. I think she was surprised because I was like 24 & it made her happy that young people were watching. I gave her a big hug. She was awesome.

I always loved her in the series. She had a warmth and kindness that seemed to jump from the screen. She was the perfect choice to portray Thelma Lou. I know she was "just a character" in a TV show, but to me, there was an intangible that she brought to the role that made me feel like I was home. Makes me sad😥
I believe a little bit of an actor works its way into the characters that they play on-screen. That was definitely the case with Betty.

The episode where Jeff Pruitt (Alan Hale) comes to town looking for a wife, I can see why he went for Thelma Lou.
You are so right Herb, putting ourselves in the land of Mayberry, Barney made a huge mistake leaving her behind to go be a detective in Raleigh.
Thelma Lou loved Barney with all her heart. Barney always seemed to start driving the wagon, before the horses were hitched up good.
Thelma Lou was devastated that Barney left her.
Betty Lynn was a big part of my childhood, that I am losing quicker and quicker with the passing of these Icons.

I'm 61 years old. I have watched the show almost continuously since my childhood.
I wish people, and the world were like that show.
My daughter growing up would always watch Andy with me, and one of my biggest emotional thrill was to take my daughter to Mayberry and to the museum. I actually cried a few times. So stupid, but magical.
Thank you Dave for letting us know that Betty Lynn died. She was one of my favorite actresses on "The Andy Griffith Show." With Betty Lynn playing Thelma Lou and Don Knotts playing Barney Fife, they made Thelma Lou and Barney Fife the perfect couple. She was very sweet and pretty when she was on "The Andy Griffith Show." Her character Thelma Lou was so down to earth, charming, and intelligent. I remember that it was pointed out in one of the seasons that Thelma Lou worked in an office. I guess that's why Andy Griffith had Betty Lynn play his secretary in the show "Matlock." She was good in that show too.

What a beautiful lady. I wanted to make it down to meet Betty during Mayberry Days, but my dad fell I'll and passed away. My mom and I watched many,
many reruns of the show & we both loved and adored Betty Lynn. She was one of the most beautiful actresses on television. I believe Betty was that same person we saw as Thelma Lou on the AG Show. She was definitely one of my favorites all around. Now , I regret not being able to meet her, but my mom and I were always wondering how poor mouthy Barney ever got such a sweet "Gem" with such beauty & grace. She had it all over Andy's girlfriend Helen. Rest in Peace Betty. You were loved by more people than you will ever know. We hated to see you go but now it's to take a rest. God Bless you for all those wonderful memories!!!

Absolutely the perfect match for Barney and the perfect selection for a part of the Andy Griffith show. Very attractive too in a clean cut sort of way with great acting skills. She was a pleasure to watch how she fit in with the atmosphere of the show. I still watch all the reruns nightly and she was one of the several great stars of the show.

Wow. This is so sad. I loved meeting her when I visited The Andy Griffith Museum. She was a pleasure and so kind to everyone she met. I always thought it was great that Betty was remembered for being the wonderful character that was Thelma Lou and I loved that she embraced the fact that she was a member of the Mayberry family.
