Hi! Thanks for watching. I just wanted to let you know that after I made and published this video, I realized that I had made several building mistakes. Sorry about that…I’m just an old guy who had brain surgery a few months ago lol. But I’m glad to be alive and glad to be building and making videos again. Thanks to all who have pointed out my building errors!

Just realized that Benny's having LL 929 and the galaxy explorer being LL 928 made Benny's basically a next gen galaxy explorer. Though I am sure some people noticed that when Benny's came out.

Some of your "mistakes" could be seen as personal touch or customizations. The blue piece on the aft door you have on inside out could be a useful way to mount some other gadget like even more lights or a sensor. Even the way the instructions have them on the inside, it feels like something else should go on them like lights, more tools, or display panels. The triangle pieces near the yellow/black "Invasion Stripes" could just as easily go where you have them.

I think the Galactic Explorer had to stick to the old “clean and simple” look a lot more than Benny’s. Benny’s was the ship you made with all the space parts you had from the sets. I thought the engines come off it to be little mini scooter type ships?

100%. They're both good in their own ways, bennys ship feels like a new set with new parts that follows the old blocky classic space build, whereas the galaxy explorer feels like a modern sleek and detailed recreation of classic space. Both are great and I'd be totally fine with either

it's still not a patch on the original though. Something about the jerky oversized yellow ratchet style cockpit covers just aren't as cool as the original opener :). It also should have had the planet logo pieces on the sides plus actual printed pieces for the side grills as what they used is not a good replacement for that design. Also it looks weird that they went with a printed planet piece so small and just surrounded it with other non printed pieces on the front instead of just a larger design like the original. I do appreciate all printed pieces however. Especially for all of the computers. Unlike most Star wars sets today lol

Benny's spaceship looks much more like sets made in the mid 90-s. Very busy, plenty of slapped-on play features and detachable modules. The new one is sleek and minimalistic by comparison, but it's also much more artistically pleasing for that reason, and that doesn't come at the cost of less play functions - it's superior in that regard to the original model - which is already enough IMO.
I have nostalgia for the times where models looked like Benny's spaceship, so I'd probably want to build that one first, if given a choice

So, I was never into Classic Space; never had any sets from any of those themes. However, the old school in me is really drawn to the Galaxy Explorer out of the pure nostalgia factor, but now as I have also seen the set actually built and up close, I'm also very drawn to how sleek the updated build looks, while still calling out to the 70's build. Benny's ship does have a lot of parts that directly evoke old school parts, but I don't get the same feeling about that as I do seeing the G/E. So that definitely gets my vote!

    • @DEVILTAZ35
      @DEVILTAZ35 2 года назад

The 70's build you could hold by the sides and swoosh about though. This one falls apart lol. The old one does too if you grab it by the engines but you can grab it by the side wings unlike the new one lol.

Just a few points, your 2x2 toe triangles on the wings are in the wrong place. You have them along the tile edging and they are supposed to be back a few studs. Also you said the original Galaxy Explorer had stickers for the arrows. Just for clarification, they were actually printed pieces. There were no stickers in the original space sets.

Both great sets with different purposes. Benny’s spaceship was such an awesome throwback in the movie (like his broken helmet!) and fun surprise, but ultimately a play set for kids (since the movie existed to sell toys). The new Explorer is a much more sleek throwback, meant for those of us that grew up with the original space toys. Just look at the piece counts and see how much is going on on Benny’s ship, and how much hidden structure and detail is in the Explorer. Both awesome though, and thanks for showing them off side by side!

bennys space ship every time, the original galactic explorer although like most lego of the time was primitive, it was one of the classic space lego sets we all wanted, and just like the galaxy commander, or the robot command centre you really cannot go wrong if you have certain sets from back in the day, and while this new version of the galaxy explorer is no doubt put together better, and is a better set generally than the original, my heart is still in love with the classic sets.

  • @seekwhen1848

Galaxy explorer wins. Simple & iconic silhouetts and color contrast was enough to win us.
Not to mention more watered down build actually allows for more potential for alternate builds!
When every part of a model screams for attention like in 2000s legos, you get distracted from the model very fast.
Too much detailing makes silhouettes complex, relies on many specialized parts, and limits your ability to re-purpose model for other builds, unless you have lots of bulk lying around.
So yes.. LEGO please just focus on BASICS FIRST, then worry about details or eye catchers.

The best way to describe Benny's Starship... is Classic Space filtered by late 90's/Aught's Space. It would fit in next to next to Mars Mission/SP III with out clashing in styles with appropriate Space mini figures instead of the movie ones.

I've seen Jang's review and I have a few helpful comments about the Explorer.
Firstly, as I see has been resolved, the 928 does in fact have a pair of miniships which form the secondary wing engines on the main ship.
Second, you're supposed to lower the hatch at the rear of the ship fully before sliding the ramp out. This stops the ramp from getting caught by the anti-studs to the cheese wedges below, and allows the ramp to drop to the ground.

I had a friend in the 80s that built a very large, almost room-filling spaceship, made from Legos of any colors available at that time. Benny's Spaceship Spaceship SPACESHIP! and the construction shown in the LEGO Movie reminded me very much of that spaceship, adding some function here and there, except that it sticks to the classic colors and has a higher playability (whoosh! fighter jet!) than the colorful carpet-sized one, which you might have had to call a space station actually, because it was stationary :D. Since I was a great fan of the classic lego series back then and still have pretty much all of my old sets, my favorite is the new Galaxy Explorer. But Benny's spaceship as a movie character also holds a special place.

It's becoming more and more of reality that planes can be used as spaceships in real life so having a spaceship look like a plane isn't too bad

    • @youtubeinvestigationsystem202
      @youtubeinvestigationsystem202 2 года назад

Modern spacecraft's have landed similar to planes, but they are not as similar as you would think. Spaceships often are brought into space by larger rockets, so the aerodynamic look is discarded as it is useless in the vacuum of space.

    • @klausm5460
      @klausm5460 2 года назад

Having grown up in the Space Shuttle era that notion always sounded logical to me. Before I started digging deeper into astronomy and space exploration a couple of years ago I thought the idea of rockets was outdated. Turns out due to the amount of fuel needed a rocket is still the best method to launch a payload into outer space while an airplane-like craft s a somewhat logical (not the only) solution for low earth orbit. Nevertheless, these delta wing fantasy spacehips are still extremely cool.

With an eye on the basic design elements Benny's spaceship has the advantage to be the more evolved one, because the cockpit is integrated into and down under the winglevel. This concept is shown (first) in the LL918. The new Galaxy Explorer is a genius built, but misses the opportunity to have more details and volum on the underside. But hey, it's lego and gives rom for moc's!
Both models had to take som colour compromises, the new galaxy explorer uses (to much) white, Bennys uses (to much) dark grey.
Thank you for the topic, both romships are my favorites in my collection 😉.

I think Benny's is more true to the vintage space's rough aesthetic. The galaxy explorer uses a lot of smooth plate and has chunky edges which are reminiscent of modern lego and which I hate. So I start to favour Benny's...
But the main advantage the Galaxy Explorer has over Benny's is that there are no stickers just like in vintage space. The other advantage the Galaxy Explorer has is that it's an exploration vessel just like vintage space. Benny's Spaceship is what the USS Defiant would look like if it was made of vintage space lego: sure the rough aesthetic might be right but it's a full blown warship. Benny's Spaceship exists solely to blow up stuff. Whilst this is super awesome it's not true to the vintage space philosophy, which is where the Galaxy Explorer has the edge.
They're both great ships. I can't choose between them because the pluses and minuses kinda cancel each other out.
GALAXY EXPLORER: not quite vintage space aesthetic due to excessive smooth tiles + chunkiness on the edges but has vintage space philosophy as it is built for exploration and vintage space brick/tile design with no stickers.
BENNY'S SPACESHIP: has vintage space aesthetic but deviates from vintage space brick/tile design because it has stickers and is a military dreadnought which has nothing to do with vintage space exploration philosophy

As a display piece? Galaxy Explorer. Not just for the nostalgia factor, but because it has those wonderful beveled wing edges and a fairly clean/simple design that can be appreciated at a distance. Benny’s spaceship is really busy with lots of detail that makes it hard to appreciate on display.
For build experience? They’re both interesting, but Galaxy Explorer I think takes the edge with some fascinating geometry and some new techniques. I enjoyed building Benny’s spaceship, but I learned things from Galaxy Explorer.
For play? Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!, no question. It’s got lots of great play areas, particularly the command center in the middle. I love the robot storage and the way the two smaller spaceships perfectly continue the angle of the wing edges. And it’s a better shape and design for swooshing. And for those who play that way, it’s got 2 or 3 kinds of shooters.
As a parts pack? Toss-up. Each has a handful of rare or unique parts, though most of them in Benny’s spaceship have since become available in other sets. Each of them has enough valuable parts that I almost bought a second copy just as a parts pack-but only “almost”. I suspect the only parts in the new Galaxy Explorer that won’t become available in other sets in the near future are the printed parts.
For minifigs? Toss-up. I don’t care for the robot in Galaxy Explorer and love the robots in Benny’s spaceship. And spacesuit Unikitty is really cool. But whether old-school space minifigs or Lego Movie tie-in minifigs are more valuable depends on the person. I still have dozens of the original classic space minifigs, some with good prints, so getting a few more isn’t that special. But if you don’t have them and want them? Then that’s clearly a win. (I also think that buying a $100 set just for the minifigs is silly. YMMV.)

The only small thing is that I think they should have taken a different number, it's not LL928 because that one's from 1979, and Benny's spaceship is LL929 ... so maybe LL938 would have been perfect :)

Got to say I prefer the Galaxy explorer, as it has that beefy wing section, simple to read design and lots of imaginative play adventures. The other, is more like the planetary defender, a ship that can get to any part of a planet speedily but still operate in atmosphere. It is fun, quirky and perfect for what it is, and in the film. For me its over the top and I would rebuild things for more playability options over violence and lose the expanding feature for more interior space, oh and beef up the wings to add landing gear...

Look, the galaxy explorer is a homage to the specific ship. Whereas Benny's Spaceship is a homage to Lego Space as a whole, even Star Wars.
Things like the shooters remind you of the newer age of space, with Space Police 3 or Galaxy Squad or Star Wars. The pipes are something you'd be more likely to see in later Space sets. The two droids are modernizations of the droids you'd see in futuretron days. The dish reminds me of exploriens and the such. Detachable ships are something you'd see a lot in later sets. Specially thinking aboug Ice Planet or blacktron here. There's the bad robot who has a space police visor.
Meanwhile the galaxy explorer has one objective only, and it is to be the best version of that ship.

Frankly I have no favorite over the other, I like them both. Yes Benny’s Spaceship is a homage set aside from the original Classic Space where the other is a direct modern remake of the CLASSIC Galaxy Explorer but it does NOT stop there. Because if you were to get the set or already have it, it will include two other alternative builds allowing you to rebuild the other minor (medium & small) Galaxy Explorer variants from back then which is AWSOME. But, if you want to you can still implement Benny’s Spaceship by perhaps redesigning the build by getting rid of the middle functions attached to the upper wings and replacing Benny and the crew (minus Space Kitty) and substituting them for any of the white, pink or yellow minifigs from Benny’s Squad pack.

  • @shaunaustin2742

New Galaxy Explorer wins for me.
I prefer the Classic space look with innovative use of bricks and plates and only a few special parts for thrusters, wings and stuff.
This resulted in a smooth 70s sci-fi feel and is done well with the anniversary ship, despite using complex parts.
Benny's spaceship is too haphazard and looks like some of the other LEGO Space lines where it was the complex parts that created the look.
Both are great, but I definitely prefer the anniversary set.

Galaxy explorer all the way; it’s a nice, cleaner ship with very genourous room inside that you could easily get maybe 12 astronauts standing or sitting inside without cramming the ship full. There’s also the fact it has 2 alt models to reflect the 3 size ships you could get at the time.

Perhaps just 8 Minifigs, comfortably. Benny's has 3 in the cockpit, 2 in the back compartment and 2 in the fighters (7). GE could have 4 in the cockpit, 3 in the back compartment and 1 on the vehicle in the rear bay.

I bought an original Galaxy Explorer from working odd jobs and being 10yrs old. $32 was a lot of money back then. I didn't really enjoy the original ships or designs that Lego came up with, I enjoyed making my own vehicles. I just bought both, the new Galaxy Explorer and Benny's Spaceship, I may build both of them once, but I really want to be able to build my own stuff. My mom gave away my Space Legos when I went to college. I had built up a good amount of sets, but always wished for more blocks to go even bigger. I am interested to see what I can build between these two sets, if I get bored, or if I find that I don't really enjoy legos as an adult, I guess my grandson who is 9yrs old will get some more Legos to add to his collection.

You shouldn’t have a problem with the ramp at the back. Put everything back in, then unclip the grey/blue part and let it down all the way. I don't own Benny's spaceship but it's even larger than the new Galaxy Explorer (which I do own). That one is already _almost_ to big to pick up and "fly". But I'm convinced that the swoosh factor of Benny's one is nil. Benny's one, to me, is more like a play set. You can take it apart into multiple ships that you actually can hold in your hand and play/fly with.
Additionally, the 2 alternative smaller builds of the Galaxy Explorer are really, really nice! As a matter of fact I display mine in the medium sized alt. build. Excellent swoosh factor.
P.S. I too spent a lot of money on Star Wars in the 70's and the larger Lego sets were out of my reach. Great thing about Lego: you could build SW like stuff from Lego. ;)

I really want to have Benny's Spaceship, but right now it's at least twice the price of the new 90th Anniversary Galaxy Explorer set.
That being said, I do prefer the 90th Anniversary set more because it not only pays homage to the original Galaxy Explorer, you can also download instructions to rebuild it into the other two spaceships of that era with the same level of accuracy and care. The biggest downside is that you will have to buy 3 total copies of the 90th Anniversary set in order to have all 3 ships displayed simultaneously.
All thing considered, if I had an unlimited budget, I would definitely buy 2 more Anniversary Galaxy Explorer sets (to display the alternate builds) AND a copy of Benny's Spaceship.
