260 mile range is great! But I could see me losing my job. Go spend a weekend in the woods and cook, watch some TV, run the heat for a while, then show up to work a few weeks late/MIA saying I ran my battery down and it took a few weeks to charge enough to get home. 🤣
An 80 mile range won’t fly. I would like to know how long the solar would take to make a reasonable range bailable. It’s a cute vehicle and the quiet drivetrain would make getting anywhere more pleasant than any VW bus.
The specifications have gone 'old technology' since the arrival of Ulrich Walker on the Board. He has a long automotive industry history, but the only previous electric outfit he was involved in went 'tits up' as Brits would say, with founder/technical staff leaving due to the 'safe-old-technology' route he guided the company down. I am no longer particularly confident that Xbus is going to survive.
80 miles on a 10kWh battery? I don't believe it. Most EVs get 3-5mi per kWh, so unless there's some black magic they have that gives this 8mi per kWh, I would expect maybe 40 miles on the base battery. The solar roof can do 800W in ideal conditions according to their site. Realistically, you're looking at 500W. So assuming a normal drive efficiency of 4miles/kWh, you probably get maybe two miles of range every hour the sun is out. Also with only a 56kW max motor output, you're probably looking at 0-60mph times of 20 seconds. It doesn't need to be a speed demon, but let's set some realistic expectations. Cool ideas, though.
Compared to the standard Xbus, the camper received four centimeters more ground clearance and off-road tires. Motor-wheels provide the car with all-wheel drive.
Interesting concepts, however being a old fashion tent camper, I enjoy roughing it, so a good long range efficient rugged AWD EV, with attached solar panels, an capable of being charge via solar panels or solar generator if necessary, would suffice, but these luxury campers are very innovative and cool, to bad the industry waited so long to get away from fossil fuel…
I am so glad work is being done on this. I hope they all migrate to induction cookers. I don't want to burn gas in an electric camper, if I can avoid it. We have an old VW camper. We never use the inside stove. Living in a big country with extreme weather, only long range will do.
With the sun and the wind I will travel forever. . . since I consume electricity to travel, why not recover some of it using a mini or micro wind generator, with vertical axis, placed externally somewhere in the car and a system of solar panels? These systems will deliver energy. . forever. (I mean: a moving object, like a car, will create a vortex in the air, the wind. When it hits the wind turbine, it will generate electricity that will recharge the batteries).
Very few real vehicles, almost all concept. First one has a tiny battery, and a stupidly low price. Second one is the only functional vehicle, but is a concept only. The third one looks really cool, especially if it can be a hybrid, but still with a multiple hundred-mile electric range. Rest aren't even worth a mention.
The tech specs have changed (declined) a lot with the arrival of Ulrich Walker on Xbus's board. A lot of people will be cancelling their orders in favour of genuinely 'new technology' options.
I’m in. Had the feeling it was a VW descendant even w/o the badge. Great idea. Wish they showed a more comprehensive tour but I guess that’s all the info they had. Always loved the VW line. Discontinuing these vehicles was a sad day in history. The gas burner would go replaced by electric. Definitely beef up the battery bank, see if some lithium could be slid in. Can’t wait to see the finished product! Americans manufacturers WAKE UP!!!
30k us dollars is 25,397 GBP. if only they actually did cost that here in uk. However, what they will actually cost here is 30k GBP plus whatever the gov subsidy is for electric cars plus whatever extra the car company would add on because they can . So probably 50k. Very cool though(the vw) especially with the solar panels.

Nah... Not going to spend $50K+ on a vehicle. Forget it. Will just continue to R&R what I have. The XBUS has alot of appeal but for its size and safety, the price needs to be lower. Its capability would fit my needs though. I think instead I'll just restore a 70s VW Transporter instead .

Pure electric doesn't work for range today. Camping is range for many. Maybe a few years from now with better energy storage, but right now, it is for short range at best. A fail.
Electric vehicles for all but the in town commuter are still just laughable. This won't get you to a campground unless it's the city park. You folks understand that when they do these "mileage" tests they are on a track with no wind, no hills and no load. I bought a EV that was supposed to get about 300 miles on a charge but would take about 60% of a charge to get me 34 miles round trip to work and back each day. We are a long ways from this tech being worth while.
Something is seriously wrong with your EV if you can't manage more than ~50 miles on a battery rated for 300 miles. Worn out perhaps? Doing efficiency tests at the drag strip?
Accountants perhaps. $19K sounds much more reasonable for something my state would likely only register as an ATV or motorcycle. Not even sure I could get insurance on it and my state would certainly require that.
I was thinking just yesterday that VW should relaunch the Microbus in the way BMW did the Mini. Retro styling w/ modern safety and reliability. But it would probably cost a lot more than this little guy.
Have you not seen the VW Buzz? Yes, expensive. And fast.. I had heard RV companies like winnebago have made orders. I'd bet they'll start around $200k. Hashtag vamlif
@@AmeriMutt76 Yes, the VW Buzz (get it? ) is what I was referring to. I’m sure it will be cool, but fast? Not really a priority unless you’re into drifting Vans, Japanese style.
Too many of the drivetrain specs don't make sense. If you're getting 80 miles on a 10KW/hr battery, that's 8 miles per KW/hr, which is better thanb a Tesla. 50KW motor or about 70hp, so it's possible what wasn't mentioned is a really really low top speed. IE around 30-40mph. Also I doubt 1000nm torque is correct. That would be 730 ft/lb of torque, which which is V8 turbo diesel territory.
It's going to have to be sold as a truck, it will never pass the safety regulations as a car. And the range even with the expanded battery pack and solar is pathetic. It will need to expand the battery to 60-75kw to be useful
why has it taken so long for a company to make something like the xbus. why didn't tesla? I'd much rather have useable space to all sorts of things with, rather than a 4 door super fast car.
It is kinda looks like a mini version of the Russian UAZ-452. For me it is way too small and way too crowded. They should not fill the back with so much furniture. The whole top at the back should be extensible, not just the middle part. The windshield is too straight so probably the fuel consumption is high.
It's doomed here in the United States to begin with a it cannot make front crash safety ratings b the range is too small for the base model the base model should be the highest model range in the United States this country is large and distances are vast so I take it they don't want to work with the American market otherwise they would have made the range a lot further so you got to make electric vehicles I can do a thousand miles on a charge before Americans really think about buying them in big quantities and you got to make them cheap and I'm not talking about she as in crappy work I'm talking about expensive in quality cheap and price if you can do all that
OMG flashbacks camping towing a pop up with a VW bus in the early 70's with a full load of family going from central PA to Sarasota Fl!
Right vehicle, wrong driveline for that kind of load. I have a late 70s Westfalia with a Corvair flat-six aircooled engine. Better HP to weight ratio.

I've got feeling batts don't like the cold .
I hope those batteries are heavy enough to keep it from tipping over.
My 2014 Nissan Leaf has a rough range around 75 miles. Trust me, 87 mile range is insufficient in high altitude destinations (Colorado).
