thank you for explain how to fix the tension part in BMW really help me a lot because it just broke now i was reach for video to how and i saw your video and spend few minutes to review and thank you for your explanation very helpful
nice video clips, would make the general job a lot easier for people, and yes as stated by others google for the belt configurations. Thanks for taking the time to do these.
Thank you for this great instruction video. I replaced my tensioners today and I used this video :) The thing is though, I was able to do everything without removing the fan.
so clearly we as bmw owners can do most of the replacements our selves and run scan for fault codes saving us thousands at the dealer ship . does this add up correctly ? wow i 'll never step into a dealer ship for service
yes you must use the hex on the pulley to compress lower hydraulic tensioner as the mount bolt will shear due to incorrect fulcrum length/angle to compress it, whereas the pulley is mounted to give a good ratio of leverage.
hey good video but the routing on your drive belt is incorrect, the belt should go under the idler pulley not over the top of it. generally smooth pulleys get the smooth side of the belt and grooved pulleys get the grooved side. i hope someone corrected that
+Travis Brown - You are correct. In the video, the segment from 8:36 to 9:05 shows the belt routed on top of the tensioner whereas it should run below it. As you said, smooth side of the belt to smooth side of the pulley. Thanks for the input.
@jurgen4life also the timing chain is within the engine so the belt would not be rubbing against it, so the person you ask doesn't know jack about bimmers. If you want good advice join a BMW forum, there are a lot of them, and response time is within a few hours if not minutes instead of 9 months as this message reached you.
I have a little issue with my bmw 1996 328i sedan. I have a whistling noise under my hood but the noise manily happens when i put the gear in gear sich as drive or reverse but when i starte to go a bit faster the noise dies away until when i come to a stop i can hear it. I changed the ilder pulley but its still there could it be the tensioner pulleys that are bad?
Nice video, I noticed that my e36 328i (m52b28) does not have the idler as yours has next to the alternator. Am I right? I checked bentleys manual and seems that it has the 6 cilinder not idler.
i have a question about 1995 to be able to take out the belt for the passenger how would you do if you notice the car is total different ...would you show it please
@jurgen4life That there is called the diesel mod. It gives you the same mileage as a diesel bmw. I'm kidding. What a lot of people say it is is it's the VANOS unit. Look it up on youtube it just might be the same noise you are hearing.
Your hands fumble around so much as if you are trying to work faster than you should.. chill out, calm down, and work carefully.. im surprised you havent damaged or lost anything yet..
not really, around $160 if that. that's peanuts for a BMW, and if youre not competent in a garage wait till you get into issues w/ the heater core and VANOS.
Happiest man on earth if this works on my car. Its been sitting for almost 2 years..
Thank you very much for this! Perfect explanation for replacing the AC belt tensioner.

My tensioner uses a torx tool to release the belt, not a hex tool. Are you sure yours is a hex? If not, you'll round it out.
A hex bit won't even fit in a torx bolt head
I cranked on my tensioner bolt and the tensioner broke in half.. Use the pulley hex to compress the tensioner. New tensioner on order :(
Thank you
Why no torque specs for the respective bolts? :(
Very helpful. Thank you!
That belt route don’t look right to me my s52 routes under the idler not over

torque specs would be nice.
@10:13 can someone tell me what the Bonus part does? Thanks
Pfff, always US versions. It seems close to impossible to find DIY's on Euro M3's ...
KickrAzz the s50b32 isn't much different as far as this goes.
The part numbers are specific to the model. You can easily find these parts at great prices at our website. AutoWerksofAmerica com
