  • The stance and posture of the golf swing is much more relaxed that most players perceive. To ensure an effective swing, you want to begin from a relaxed, ready position- without unnecessary stiffness or rigidity.

This made me laugh because I started golfing in the 90's and I definitely remember being taught to stick my rear end out. Even back then it felt unathletic. This was a top notch tip video.

I am un-learning a whole lot on Paddy's channel. It is apparent that instruction in the 1990's, when I read golf digest as a early teenager, has a lot to answer for.

    • @markrusso8546

Completely agree Shayne. I took the game up seriously at or about that time and regret 90 percent of what I tirelessly tried to apply that was taught by the supposed gurus of that time. So much of what they insisted on doing in the golf swing has been disproven. Absolute menaces.

What happened in the 90"s was a lot of fitness instructors trying to jump into the golf instruction business. Keep you spine straight, Keep your right knee flexed etc.. too many people who didn't know golf. I like Lee Trevino's advice when someone asked him about Tiger and Chris Como.. "Why the hell would he take advice from someone who can't beat him!?"

I always believe that confidence is the no 1 thing for playing good golf. When you are confident then you swing freely and relaxed. When you are not then you become rigid and try to steer the ball. Thanks for this excellent explanation on why posture is so vital for enjoying the game.

Such great info. I started playing in the late 90’s and took lessons. They taught me to keep the back straight, feet straight ahead in my stance. Hated golf because I always sliced or pulled it and my back and knees were hurting so much during and after rounds. Love it now as I’ve learned what you’re teaching but I still have some swing issues that are ingrained from all those years of bad habits.

Thanks Paddy! Love your videos, they’re terrific and the way you explain things is just so simple, no gimmicks. Any advice on how to keep the lead should down through impact? My swing fault right now seems to be “turning” in the downswing by yanking my left shoulder up, struggling to separate turning my core from pulling that shoulder way up and leaving the club face wide open or topping it.

Hi. Thanks again Mr. Padraig Harrington for your time and knowledge. I would really like to see a video on what your arms do during the swing. Particular the right elbow. Another thing would be what the hands do. It would be really nice to know how you view it. And, maybe what you think about during the swing. What Ive been realizing I not do during the swing is my right elbow moves outwards as I come into impact. It appears that it is suppose to externally rotate, and move in front of your body with just the right hand squaring the clubface. The front crease of the right arms ends up facing forward, as in 90 degrees from your stance line.
