i just love the chill warm vibes of this channel with the adhd brainrot memes, but the memes are subdued and in the background, so they dont strongly disrubt the vibes.
Those weapon sparks are that 110% that some developers go, and it will definitely won't go unnoticed! 🔥 The texture change on the sawmill blade when it starts cutting wood is also such a neat little detail! Also interesting how much the motion blur helps sell the speed of the sawblade, maybe that concept is something you could mention in a future video 😄
Just gotta say I really love how this channel developed from a pretty standard Tutorial-ish and showcase channel to one with some seriously amazing explanations of how to make good VFX. Your video quality went up really high. The videos are booth very digestable (not dragging on for an hour) and give some really good information. I would be very happy if you would give some more direct examples of how to achieve some effects via Engine/Modeling/Texturingbut even if you don't I am sure I'll continue to watch your videos.
I've bren trying to create these kinds of smaller vfx for a while. I found a good way to do so, but the aspect of variety is something I've not yet looked at. Thank you for showing us your methods
Dropping another extraordinary VFX video? POG Edit: Unbelievable amount of detail. That "pegasus run" with the blade looks so satisfying, assuming there is subtle SFX for it as well. If only more games had such effort... AAA games haven't had such attention to details for at least a decade.
@@onetupthree I would love to see a collaboration video, or at least a showcase of SFX on existing VFX (especially the subtle ones), because it is the combination of animation + VFX + SFX which is the final result, and this video shows the result without the SFX which is a cliffhanger lol

@@onetupthree its amazing. It plays a bit janky still. Having two different buttons for the two different sprints. And the goals are not really clear in the beginning. But nonetheless it's a lot of fun playing it. Definitely a must buy to support that awesome work you devs already did and will do in the future!
This game is looking gorgeous! VFX is really important for any game, I would synthetize the Idea of VFX as telling the story of events trough their consequences. Great video!
The game looks great! you and everyone else on the team did an amazing job! and send some extra love to your animators, these animations are top notch!
I didnt know you were working on this!! Woah lmao I was like "the game released a demo today and he already made a video on it - that's impressive" lmao
100% agree that fx such as these subtle ambience ones are critical for adding that layer of polish in a game. Thanks for the breakdown ! How long have you all been working on Overthrown?
thanks ! personally ive only been in the project for around a year and a half :O but based on the Brimstone twt the earliest proof of concept was around late 2018 👀
Me watching that jump vfx and thinking how nice that made the jump up look only for it to then be used as an example of something we don't pay attention to. XD I guess since I'm trying to get into animation I must look at things differently.
As a designer, I have a curious question for you: When do you feel like VFX should *not* be used, or when to hold back on adding additional polish or flair beyond just time constraints? There is something to be gained from subtlety in some cases that I think haven't been explored in games yet, much in the same way more lines =/= a better drawing, for instance.
great question 🤔 generally i think even the smallest of actions could use some sort of visual feedback! taps on a mobile game or even mouse events on a button (hover, click, release) could show some sort of change in animation i'd say the only time you don't want any additional VFX is to put 110% of the player's attention on something else :O I'd maybe hold back on adding VFX on player input during a cutscene, but even then adding *some* sort of visual feedback is good (e.g. showing a progress bar when the player has to hold a button to skip cutscenes)
Overthrown looks awesome and super cute! What engine does it use? Also, in order to code vfx like these, how do you structure the game scenes to spawn the vfx? In the case of the player running for example, do the animations include the VFX? Or are they spawned by the game on the location the character steps?
thanks ! it uses unity :D most of the VFX is object pooled and spawned as needed the player pegasus run VFX is attached to the player and controlled via script!
