This excerpt is from the 1960 RCA recording of the complete opera...the finest edition of "Madame Butterfly" ever produced, in my opinion. (And it is still available for purchase.) I discovered it as a 12-year old boy in 1962, and it introduced and bonded me to opera and to Bjoerling forever. And that passion has afforded me so much pleasure in life ever since. I visited and decorated Bjoerling's grave in central Sweden (the ONLY reason I went to Sweden) two years ago, in thanks for what he gave me...and gave to all of us. He was probably the finest tenor of the 20th century. (I say "probably" only because I know there are some Caruso, Pavarotti, and Domingo fans out there :-)
Marc, I had the opportunity 3 times to visit Borlange and the Museet during Harald's years managing it. The last time I was at the Museet, in 1996, Harald took me in his office and played me what was up to that time unissued recordings of Jussi. I just sat there and wept all day long. I know we respect and love all the great tenors, but at the end of the day I have to admit, that Bjorling has that little extra, to me setting him apart from all the brilliant tenors of all time, OMG, what a voice, like never before and probably never again. Thanks.
@@mangiafrani Frank, you are quite right. Thanks for the correction. And I still have those vinyl records with that Angel/EMI label. Back in the "good old days," Angel--in my opinion--was second to London Records (and RCA was way third) in their "stable" of opera singers. Angel had Callas, Di Stefano, etc. Those were the days.

I have thought about it a lot and I think it comes down to the innate melancholy his voice projects..the tragedy of existence, etc. Best regards, Marc

Another singer going to play Pinkerton asked Bjorling if he had any advice or pointers. He said "When Pinkerton returns at the end make sure he has a little more gold braid on his jacket otherwise it looks like he was not a very good officer. "
I’ve always found the subtext of this duet fascinating. You’re aware that the feelings are not the same on both sides. Butterfly loves Pinkerton, but for him it’s just a romp. Love versus betrayal. At the end of live performances of this opera, the tenor typically get grudging applause, which he accepts good naturedly. Pinkerton is a cad with beautiful music.

I have always treasured this recoding and de los Angeles' recording of SourAngelica as the pinacles of her art.

great choice, great taste, lucky I feel when hearing these voices, not only gifted, hard work, polished every corner of the pipes...
Maravilhosos, amo escutá-los. Sublimes vozes.
Just like Brahms piano concerto no.1, I could listen to Puccini's romantic operas such as Madama Butterfly , La Boheme ( Since 1956, every year I must ! ) every day, and never got tired of them ! George Wu, Architect, A.I.A.,NCARB 2019-9-6

My first records from the public library-my most beloved!
This duet is insuperable. And the Bjorling-delosÁngeles Boheme.
Lovely soprano, great tenor.
I agree.
Perfect, both of them!
My George and I listened to these two wonderful singers throughtout so many years together. He loved both introducing them to me.
I first de Los Angeles as Butterfly at the old Met, tears were running down my face at the end; luckily I was sitting alone in the box, that was the only time I had such an experience with any singer...
Is he gone now?
🎵 Beautiful!
When these two sang together they produced something so special, magical.
