That was me at 7:05. I remember hearing the CQ loud and clear and QSB put the response down in the mud. Nice activation and love the go box! Great vid.
Great video, love the way you explained to the guys that wondered what you were doing....calm, collected and explained in a way that could be understood.
I am new to this and I really enjoy it. I currently have a pl 660 and can only listen. This ham radio hobby will be my next step. Thank you for sharing.
The great think about activation of a park is all the people you got to talk to. Seems many had never heard of ham radio. As it happens a lot, you maybe their intro into ham radio world by being there that day! Also, you confused me for a second, when you put on the screen that you were not expecting so many people, and that is why they were not miced up. I was like what does it have to do with mice? 73 K1MAZ
Anyone remember when you would engineer then build your own field day antennas? And thru knowledge and exsperiance and a little math they worked really great!
QRM was bad but you made it. Nice activation Josh. The thing that struck me was how dead and dry everything is. Really get the sense of how dry it is there. Also, Go Box worked well.
That looks like a whole bunch of fun!!! - great view, great hobby, great food! :) Hope I can catch you on the air some day! AI6XK that stove looks way spiffy!
nice explanation to the passer byers. hopefully they got bit by the radio bug. thats the best part of in public activations in my opinion. folks get curious learn and get into it.
Like the setup and great video. Why do I want to just play and tell someone that I’m contacting the mother ship to be picked up, then wait to see if the guys in white jackets show up to take me away
11:33 Around here we call that "Carry in, carry out" or "You carried it in here a-hole, take it with you. In fact the beer's lighter now." NJ is lousy with slobs.
Another amazing go box video, this time final product off the bench in active duty! A couple of QNs: (1) What kind of power are you using, and (2) do you see any need for grounding as means to send away unwanted RF interference? The antenna is grounded of course; wondering what's your take on grounding the other station components
Thats why I will never activate where people can ask a thousand questions. I am glad you were nice, and I am glad other people are nice when activating,,,,,,, but, I would go out of my mind with rubber neckers.
[KD2QBV] That go box turned out great! I am also fascinated by the antenna you were using. If you've reviewed it in the past I missed it. Gonna do some research...
I like to go to that equestrian camping/staging area just prior to the actual campground. Nobody ever goes there and they have like 5 tables with covers on them. And you are sort of up on a bluff.
I must add hot water, water-activated food and coffee to the electronic provisions in my go box. Good idea and, an awesome location from which to activate. AD6AE
I am a new ham. Your POTA setup is very nice. I just bought my first HF radio, a Yaesu FTDX10 . Would I need an external tuner to use that antenna, or will my radios internal tuner be enough?
i was hoping to see the Mars Rover cause it looks like your on the Red Planet, hi hi. Good too see u getting that Vitamin D Josh and superb video as always, thanks for sharing.
Enjoyed this video. Thanks, much. I’d like for you to explain your set-up. I have a 7300 and would like to do POTA on or near the Florida Gulf Coast, Pensacola. I’m a double amputee and need to be able to drive right up to a site or bicycle up to it (tricycle, actually). Thanks, I learned a lot. 73 Bob K4RDG
Love the box mate I wanna make the same thing over here in AUS (vk2). I have a few questions, On the 9Ah battery, what chemistry is it? What’s the advantage run time? How many watts where you running? How much roughly did the build cost you (besides the radios)? anything you would of done differently having been using it more. Thanks very much Sean
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thank you Josh for the reply. I did finally figure it out and I had some of the parts and ordered the rest. I’ll report how it worked. Thanks again!!!
Nice video. 2 questions. What was your final count? Will you be announcing future activation attempts for the viewers/listeners can try to work you there?
Hi Josh, freshly minted General here KK7SWB, going for my extra in two weeks. what kind of antenna is that? i cannot seem to find it online. havent bought any equipment yet except my Baofeng but looking around
I have a question, what kind of battery are you using? How many watts do you transmit and how long does your battery last? I am looking for a good portable radio and the Icom 7300 seems good to me. Thank you, Jakub OK1TCM
Hey Josh. Been a ham since 1989. Went silent for over a decade after they implemented the No-Code licensing. I just could not handle the influx of morons keying down on people and using "colorful metaphors" over the air. So I am back. Things haven't changed on the repeaters much (147.705 and 449.500 are great examples.) I do enjoy HF a bunch, especially the challenge of CW. I see you activated Chino Hills State Park, and we live in Chino Hills. So, if you are ever going back to activate, I would love to see you working and maybe I will set up my stuff (I am a CW guy), running QRP on a Yaesu FT-817. I built an EFHW antenna based on an article by Mindy, KM1NDY (love her call!) Anyway, I have not ventured out yet, and would love to see someone experienced in action. If you're OK with that, I am good in QRZ. Thanks and Best 73, Marc, N6UNX
NOTE: the antenna is the Chameleon Tactical Delta Loop. chameleonantenna.com/shop-here/ols/products/cha-tdl
How are you liking the delta loop? i just got mine, and it's been too windy so I haven't put it up yet.
That was me at 7:05. I remember hearing the CQ loud and clear and QSB put the response down in the mud. Nice activation and love the go box! Great vid.
Yeah. Lots of qsb that I didn’t really hear on my end. Might try higher bands next activation.
Good activation with a good go-box. It was neat to see it in action and see you out in the field.
Thanks! It does make it easy!
You did a great job explaining the hobby to people.
Thank you!
Dude, thats a huge load out.
What I loved about the video: the interactions with the non-ham park-goers and Thai curry supporting role.
Great video, love the way you explained to the guys that wondered what you were doing....calm, collected and explained in a way that could be understood.
All while setting up my station. Lol
Great job. You are an awesome ambassador for Amateur Radio!
Congrats on the POTA! Looked like you had a blast and the video production on this is hella polished
Thanks!!
That is what two three hour plane flights get ya.
Great job Josh! Look like a beautiful place. A little dry, but it's summer in Cali. 73
Many memories at that park. I used to ride my bike up there pulling my son behind me in the early 90's.
Nice activation!
N2FIX 59 Rhode Island. Finally got him after 2 hours of persistence. Got 13+1
Most of my POTA activations involve a bucket of chicken.
Nice activation. I love it when activators are QRO. I miss so many of them when they are QRP. Can't hear 'em.
Even though I am a year late to this party, loved the video and it was great watching the activation and checking out the gear.
Like the Delta Loop concept.

Lol.
I was lucky. I downloaded HAMRS right before my first Activation (while I was out on-site in fact), and boy does that make the logging go easy.

People still do that.
QRM was bad but you made it. Nice activation Josh. The thing that struck me was how dead and dry everything is. Really get the sense of how dry it is there. Also, Go Box worked well.
Yes indeed. No surprise we worry so much about fires!
I give you credit Josh. That Chino Hills park is hot and dusty! Good job!
It was great under that enclosure.
Fantastic job Jason 👌 73
Josh, I love the sound track!

awe chino I still smell it. in high school ( Montclair High) the winds were called the Chino breeze but number of cows are a lot less
On that day, there was no smell.
That box is a beast!
Great PR Josh!
Josh you got the good toys and you represent the hobby and you it with class.
Much respect 73 de N2NLQ
Thank you!
Great place to do an activation.
Chino Hills, my backyard. Nice! I need to set up a go box and get over there. My wife and I like to hike the park in cooler weather.
Oh man, that’s a good park to activate from. Very quiet.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Nice! Noise floor on 20 here in Chino is usually S3. I wonder what 40 is over there, usually S5 here.
That park is S0 on 20 & 40.

Love my jetboil. Best option here in California where we're not allowed to start a fire for fear of burning the state down.
It's weird to me so many people don't know what ham radio is at all!
Me too!
Olá, voce é o mestre do radioamadorismo ai nos EUA, lugares lindos tem ai, o sol parece brilhar melhor do que aqui no Brasil

Review on the way. Gotta build the excitement. 🤣
I’m surprised how many people stopped by to talk to you considering how remote that spot looked.
Hey, was that at the "Bane Canyon Road Outlook" spot? It's just maybe a half a mile in from the pay booth?
Yes! They tool all the shelter bits down for some reason. I had to do down to the campe site parking lot on the last POTA.
I like to go to that equestrian camping/staging area just prior to the actual campground. Nobody ever goes there and they have like 5 tables with covers on them. And you are sort of up on a bluff.

Hey Josh, awesome activation. Was the antenna the Cha delta loop? How do you like it? Nice work on the box by the way.
It is the delta loop. I like it a lot!
Just now got my Technician and just started in the hobby. Just curious what does 73 mean? I’ve noticed a lot of hams use that.
How are you powering all that?
For that login software for iOS what do I search in the App Store?

Ham radio public relations!
So Two years later. Have you given up on the go box concept for parks on the air?
No not at all. But I generally only use it on longer activations. Or campouts.

Yep. A nice covered table area.
