Thank you guys for watching. I never anticipated this getting so many views. This video was targeted to folks who made contact with me in Alaska as a digital confirmation of our contact. Since then I have had alot of folks commenting on why no explanation on abbreviations. So here goes. POTA stands for Parks on the air. It’s a program inside the ham radio world. Activators (like me) set up in these parks and other operators (hunters) try to make contact with these parks. If you want to learn more please visit parksontheair.com. Thank you!
I’m just super glad that Parks On The Air has nothing to do with the waste of time and money, the ARRL. For over 20 years, thousands of our fellow Hams has complained to whoever answers the phone at the ARRL Headquarters about the “VOMIT” colors of their annual Field Day shirts and hats. I can’t recall a “known” color for their shirts except in 2012, which was tan and is the only Field Day shirt that I still own. I’ve warned the gal that always answers the phone at the ARRL Headquarters that they were going to go out of business to the credit of the color blind person designing the colored Field Day shirt and hats each year. The only reason to maintain my ARRL membership is for the hard copies of the QST Magazines and now that the ARRL has committed suicide like our military veterans are doing everyday, there is no point to ever renew my membership ever again. 😢 We have proven our loyalties to the Amateur Radio hobby and pastime but watching them destroy themselves every year with their biggest fundraiser event with weird vomit colored shirts instead of simple black or white t-shirts is more than this hobby can handle. So thank God, thank Buddha, POTA’s has no affiliation with such losers within this great hobby. 73’ y’all from Hawaii🇺🇸
i typically do not have a problem with the Rangers. My problem is the "Stand Your Ground" "Know ever law ever written" KARENS and KENS. That assume that if a black man is out in a park or forest by himself that he MUST be doing something wrong.!!!!
Hey, I'm in North Pole Alaska. All of my personal interactions with park rangers here in Alaska have been positive. Good dedicated people. I don't HAM radio but it was fun to watch you get contacts. Good luck!
Bryan, if you ever want to see a ham station or operators in Fairbanks/NP area, let me know. My dad is a ham in NP and I live up the Steese highway. Also there is a ham at Glass Doctor in NP across from santa's house (see the big antenna along the highway).

I miss amateur radio so much. Got my license as a young child and it was one of my favorite hobbies for over 20 years. I wish there was a way for me to safely get back into it.
Just curious, what did you mean by safely get back into it? I am not real active it the hobby, but I go to our weekly coffee. Normally we have around 15 club members show up. I really enjoy that and learn a lot from them. KI7SAR

Good greeting with the LEO for that "park". Generally, most people, including forest, park, and campground personnel, don't know or even care what ham radio or POTA may be. This were we "educate" , truthfully, and completely what you're doing. Sometimes a little printed info maybe on hand for them to read in a short time. However, if time permits, do a little research a head on the park's rules, and keep your presence "small" if possible.
Absolutely gorgeous location. The camera on top of the mast was a great idea. It really helped capture a sense of the scene. 19 degrees?! How does the temperature affect the battery? I worry about condensation in my equipment taking it from a cold environment into a warm environment. Have you ever had any trouble? Thanks so much for the video. If it wasn't for creators like you making videos, I wouldn't be a ham today. I appreciate your down-to-earth style.
Thank you for the kind words! I haven’t had any issues yet with any condensation except once. It was 6 degrees and I started noticing condensation on the microphone. I just wiped it off. But I’ve never had any failures so far because of condensation. Not saying it can’t happen though. The same radio has been put through this abuse for 4 years now. Thanks again and thanks for watching my friend! 73
That’s a wonderful place. I like that point in time between the day they open (all the way through) and the point where everybody and their neighbor are driving bumper to bumper.
Haha, yeah I dare not to go that time of year. Unless I’m on the ATV and going up through the back way. RV’s lined a for miles and miles. It’s so hard for us locals to get camping spots as they are booked months and months in advanced. You know, Florida gets it to haha. 73 my friend!
Just now started getting interested in Ham radio mainly as a prepper skill. Don't know much, but I kinda like the idea of collecting contacts. Seems like it would be interesting. I didn't even know that was a thing till this video, So thanks for that.
That’s awesome! If you go to QRZ.com they have some practice tests you can take from technician through extra class license. Reach out to your local ham radio club and talk to those guy about upcoming testing sessions. Let me know if I can help in any way. Good luck to you!
Nice video! Just got my technician and working on my General now. I have been roaming the 10 meter band and having a blast! I have a Yaesu FT 891 as well and a Xeigu x6100. My farthest confirmed contact was to Barbados and that was on 10 watts with the 6100. This radio stuff is fun. 73 sir, KJ5DWW
I not only have been to Hatchers Pass I nearly purchased some land and built a home on the side of a mountain near that location. Glad I did not, it is horrible to live that high up the side of a mountain though the view is awesome.
Nice day in the pass Jeramy! Hap (KL7UPS) was a fixture there for many years before his passing in 2020. Hope to run into you and perhaps other Alaska POTA people this summer possibly. Still need AK park! 73 de KL7AC
Thank you! It was a nice day, very little wind. I never got to meet Hap but hear great things. Hopefully we can run into each other and maybe even get you that Ak park! Thanks for your support and 73 my friend!
I mean, the guy is sitting in his truck in the middle of nowhere kinda, more or less minding his business…I would think the park rangers would be nice. What’s interesting is why we are pleasantly surprised somewhat that it would be so.
Good video. I have never done POTA, but several guys from our club do. I would have been tempted to mess with the Park Ranger a little and tell her I was doing experiments to try to make it snow!
Thank you for the video! Gorgeous views! I don't understand why so many people in comments consider polite question from the park ranger as a personal offence. She did everything right, trying to find out what is going on in a polite and professional manner. What's wrong with that? Also, normally ham radio operators are eager to tell about the hobby to literally everybody, exactly as author of the video did.
Thank you! Yes she was extremely nice and I don’t understand some of the comments either. I never felt like she had any ill intentions against me being there or our conversation. Thanks for watching!
Only had one “park ranger” (in Delaware it’s DNREC [Dept. of Natural Resources & Environmental Control] Police that patrol state parks) stop and asked my what I was doing. I explained and he said have fun. Sometimes when they drive by me they’ll wave. All good. 73!
@@KL7ECoutdoors And I need Alaska (and Hawaii, but I’ll worry about that later). It’s all a matter of timing. And with more daylight for me after work, I’ll be able to get out later and hopefully get you in a log for a P2P! 73!
I love riding up in HP, I was stopped on a trail heading back to Gold Mint one time cooling off after a hell of a ride in some fresh deep powder, Park ranger on a snowmachine stopped and asked if I was good and needed anything.
Awesome video! I need Alaska for my hunter log, but its really tough being here in DC so keep on activating and I'll keep on trying to get you in the log one day. Love your setup and I use an Ft-891 as well. I'm typically a half-wave end fed wire up into a tree. But I don't see any trees in your video, lol! So looks like the buddi poles on the stand are doing really well for you. Have you tried a vertical antenna setup? I sometimes use the Chameleon 17ft whip on a mag-mount on the hood of my jeep. It gets out long and far and its very easy and convenient to use when I need to be inside the Jeep. Glad the Park Ranger was friendly. I get so many people curious, nervous or scared when they see me in a park with my gear. And regarding the Net, sometimes those Nets act like they own the freq. I understand that they have regularly scheduled Nets on the same freq, on the same day every week etc., but it would have been nice if someone would have at least tried to talk to you first and let you know that a net will be starting. Regardless, glad you got the park activated and I enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing it. Keep up the good work and "POTA-on" my friend! Cheers and 73 de W3LAM.
Thank you! Yes I’ve used the 17ft vertical and it does ok here, the buddipole seems to really pass any antenna system that I’ve used here. Thanks for watching! 73
Same here. My rangers have been super cool. I’m Here in NC. One had his license and joined us after his shift. *he mentioned they have a shortage so if you love the outdoors and looking for a career change or know someone tell them to consider being a Park Ranger*
Nice video and good operational skills, you looked very chilled! I have yet to work anyone from Alaska, I have put it on my holiday wish list😊 73 Alex M0KVA
I run into NYS DEC officers (think park rangers with full police powers) all the time at state forests here in upstate NY. Every one of them has been very professional, but none of them have ever heard of POTA. Once I tell them what I'm doing, they're always really interested.
Cool, your video randomly popped up in my feed. Do you nave an introductory video where you explain more about what you are doing, in beginner terms? would love to learn more.
Thank you! I do have a video that dives a little more into it and it’s here. ruclips.net/video/ndeLi8D-VFg/видео.html. I am a ham radio operator participating in a program that’s called parks on the air. More info here. www.parksontheair.com. So I go to different parks and set up portable operations. Other ham radio operators (hunters) chase us down on a specific frequency and try to make contact with us. It’s a very enjoyable hobby and you get to meet a lot of awesome folks in the ham radio community. Please let me know if I can help out in any way!
I was a park ranger for over 20 years. Please give them some slack. They have difficult, sometimes dangerous jobs and at times deal with the worst of humanity. No different than most police officers except in remote locations often alone.
So you're saying to just let government officials violate and harass you because "they have a hard job"? How about suck it up and treat the citizens like citizens, you know those people you serve? After all you chose that job. Citizens don't owe government officials anything. We're not here to help you do your job, but if you're doing it incorrectly that's an issue. I was in the Marine Corps. You think it's proper for me to ask the native citizenry in the country I'm policing to "cut me some slack" because I have a hard job? Lol.
No thanks bootlicker. One, they take that job knowing the risks vs their compensation. Two, our constitution limits the actions of the government, NOT the people so cops need to learn their dang place as public servants and be respectful of the people of this nation. Three, it is the cops' own damn fault they are so hated because of how they abuse their authority. I can count the number of good cops I have ever met on a single damn hand and have fingers to spare.
My first and only POTA attempt, I had a Park Ranger come up and ask what I was doing. I explained and he was cool with it and said have a good day and left. About 30 minutes later, a Sheriff deputy came by and asked me to pack up and move along. I let him know the Park Ranger was already there and was okay with what I was doing. His response was pretty much, I'm here now, not the Ranger, so..... I just packed up and didn't give him any grief. Thinking about giving it another try soon.
Oh wow…sorry to hear that. Yeah some folks just have a bad day and bring it to their jobs unfortunately. Yeah don’t let that stop you, as long as you were adhering to park rules I wouldn’t worry about it. Get back out and POTA on brother! 73
Thank you brother! If your wanting just a card yeah I can send you one. If your wanting to make contact then it’s absolutely possible. Sometimes I get some nice openings into the east coast. It’s been iffy this summer though but I imagine once we start going into winter, we would have a better chance. Thanks again, 73!
I watch a lot of POTA videos, and this one is FANTASTIC! I, too, have had numerous interactions with park rangers during activations, without exception, friendly and professional. I'll check my logs, I'm pretty sure we've worked. 73 de N9GSU.
I have wondered should POTA CW operators create a “Q” code for park ranger. QPR. When sent would mean the transmission would halt temporarily while the POTA activator could talk to a visiting park ranger.
You know, I never thought about that but it’s a very valid point. Maybe even for anybody that comes up and asking questions. Thanks for watching my friend! 73
That mountain that has a 2fer might even be a 3fer too if you also activate SOTA.... Not many pure pota 2fers here but my local Hill is a SOTA-POTA 2fer (G/CE-002 and G-0573)
I went through Hatcher in 91 maybe 2 hours before they got that record 25ft of snowfall in under 24 hours. Sketchy driving the entire trip. 6:00 Agreed we got some amazing park rangers.
Boss setup. Want to to the same in my truck - POTA while I'm laid up from SOTA with bad foot. Does your GOPRO on the mast freak out when you xmit? I'd like to put a DJI OSMO Pocket up there.
Nice video. Perhaps the net did not copy you? Anyway, more importantly - of course you get a lot of views on this video - the video and sound quality is superb, you are an excellent operator - and the scenery is Amazing!... post again soon! Side note, that park ranger was rather cute! :)
Thank you! It’s from the FT891 separation kit. When I use the Heil headphones I don’t have to take the face off every time to access the plug. I kind of like it this way. 73 my friend
Do you use anything more than the tripod to stand up the Buddipole? I've got one and I need to buy the tripod, but I'm also considering whether I need the guying kit as well. Their stuff is kind of expensive...
It’s always a good idea to have a guying kit. It’s something you can easily build yourself as well. You can always get a painters pole and a clamp to clap to a picnic table. I know several folks who use just that. Or build a drive over mount that you can put the painters pole next to your vehicle. Let me know what you come up with! 73
@@KL7ECoutdoors Thanks. I've got a few rings that slip over a pole and have four or more holes drilled in them to hold guy lines. They work really well with those fiberglass Tenkara fishing poles, which are tapered so the ring just slides down until the diameter of the pole exceeds the ring inside diameter. I usually just tie the guy lines around small stones if I cannot drive in stakes. This is what I use for SOTA activations. But my recollection of the supplied shock-corded aluminum pole that comes with the Buddipole is that it is all one diameter. So I don't know how one of those rings would work. If the pole is all one diameter, there's nothing for the ring to catch on and it will slide to the bottom.
@@dangermandave67 good point, I’ve never used the shock corded pole so I’m not sure. If you use a painters pole as it’s telescopic you should be able to guy it. If your using a base mount or a clamp I wouldn’t think you would need to guy it unless your wanting to get some altitude with the antenna. When I first purchased the buddipole I got the long version so it came with the tripod and telescoping pole. I’m pretty sure they sell that separate. It just doesn’t give you the 1/4 wave height on 20 meters. That’s the only reason I got the 10m mastwerks tripod
I found a little screw in eye that goes into the tripod thread in the bottom of the base. I run a single point guy straight down and using the legs it’s solid as a rock. A lot easier than multiple guy lines.
I watched this because I was recently approached by three different LE agencies within a 15-20 minute period during an activation. HAHA! I'd love to be able to reach AK from VA. I hope to hear you and give you a P2P someday. Do you have common days of the week or times that you activate? 73! -Scott, KE4WMF
Thank you! My goal is at least every weekend. Depending on my work schedule, Fridays sometimes as well. Band conditions are best here between 19:00 utc and 02:00 this time of year so I try to hit those times. My goal was to go out today but I didn’t get a chance so hopefully tomorrow. Hope to get you in the log, 73 my friend!
Thank you! Each side of the dipole has its own telescopic arms that I can adjust to which ever band. Once I hit 15-40 meters I would add a coil to each side to get resonate on that frequency. But I can only do one frequency at a time of course. I have to adjust the antenna for each frequency. Thanks for commenting my friend! 73
Thank you for watching! Yes it’s the power mini. I can hook my battery to that and power radio and other gear. Can also keep the battery topped off by a solar panel with the controller. It’s a pretty neat design! 73!

That’s a wonderful idea putting the camera on the antenna mast

That’s awesome!! All rangers I have came across are nice. Thanks 73!
Same here. My rangers have been super cool. I’m Here in NC. One had his license and joined us after his shift. *he mentioned they have a shortage so if you love the outdoors and looking for a career change or know someone tell them to consider being a Park Ranger*

Everything that is not forbidden is compulsory!
I run into NYS DEC officers (think park rangers with full police powers) all the time at state forests here in upstate NY. Every one of them has been very professional, but none of them have ever heard of POTA. Once I tell them what I'm doing, they're always really interested.
Absolutely! Thanks for commenting and 73 my friend!
I have had that experiences. They are always nice, you just have to be honest and tell the truth on what you are doing.

Good morning and thank you! With the sun cycle like it is, I’m working the southeast often. 73 my friend
I was a park ranger for over 20 years. Please give them some slack. They have difficult, sometimes dangerous jobs and at times deal with the worst of humanity. No different than most police officers except in remote locations often alone.
I couldn’t agree more! Thanks for commenting!
Lol.
Lol please explain how the park rangers have a hard dangerous job?
No thanks bootlicker. One, they take that job knowing the risks vs their compensation. Two, our constitution limits the actions of the government, NOT the people so cops need to learn their dang place as public servants and be respectful of the people of this nation. Three, it is the cops' own damn fault they are so hated because of how they abuse their authority. I can count the number of good cops I have ever met on a single damn hand and have fingers to spare.
I don’t see why your saying to cut them slack. The video says they are always pleasant just curious. It is what it is.
Beautiful place and great contacts. KO4HPC 73
Thanks my friend! 73
With everything, there is a little bad. The good outweighs the bad by a long shot though. It’s a great hobby! Don’t let that discourage you!

Nets figure they own that frequency at that time but still should have cleared first
No doubt, I would of gladly moved. 73 my friend!
Most of the nets I know of also have an alternate frequency if the main is in use. But I would have moved as well if they asked.
Not a frikken clue she had.
Great activations and videos from Alaska! Are you able to spot yourself for POTA......do you have cell service at most of these activation?

What's your mic plugged into? Also.. excellent video.

How do you multi-band your ham stick dipole? Great vid, thanks for posting. 73 WD4IRK
It isn’t the antennas or radios dude - it’s the beard!!
Haha! Yeah maybe 😂
Thanks for the video, just curious that that the small black box is on top of your radio, some sort of charge controller?
Thank you for watching! Yes it’s the power mini. I can hook my battery to that and power radio and other gear. Can also keep the battery topped off by a solar panel with the controller. It’s a pretty neat design! 73!
