The Problem With Gymshark

  • Gymshark were one of the first companies to use influencer marketing effectively, however while being my favourite business growth story, the rise of Gymshark helped incubate problems which would go on to haunt the brand if left unaddressed....
    ---------------------------------------
The growth of Gymshark has been nothing short of incredible.
Without a doubt, they have inspired millions to go to the Gym.
This seems weird when talking about a clothing brand, but Gymsharks use of influencer marketing and conscious focus on their ‘culture’ has in fact earnt them a cult following.
While getting people into the gym is a positive thing, many have criticised Gymshark for promoting and sponsoring disingenuous influencers secretly take PED’s all the while claiming natural to sell their programs and supplements to naïve teenagers who hero-worship influencers.
One of the biggest things which puts people off going to the gym is unrealistic expectations and fake naturals are only making this problem worse.
Amongst this advice being given out by Gymshark athletes are glaring pieces of misinformation which could have very negative effects on their audience’s health.
While most of these instances are just honest mistakes and the influencer truly does want the best for their audience because effective advice is often boring, many of these influencer’s resort to party tricks and the invention of their own ridiculous exercises to stand out from the crowd.
Misinformation and dishonesty are one of the main things which the Gymshark founder’s initial fitness inspirations (Scott Herman and Scooby1961) fought against, and Gymsharks association with those who spread misinformation has resulted in the company losing one of their best most transparent science-based influencers; Natacha Oceane.
So, I believe that this is something that Gymshark are going to start taking more seriously.
Moreover, now that Gymshark are a global billion-dollar brand for them to expand they cannot focus purely on sponsoring those with often unnaturally achievable physiques, after all aesthetics is one of many reasons to go to the gym. If Gymshark do start posting photos of people who aren’t diced to the socks, I really don’t think this is a bad thing. If the person is actively trying to improve, many people are likely to find this more relatable which may as a result encourage them to get to the gym.
After watching every single video of Ben Francis, I can say that one of his main philosophies is to not fear failure/mistakes, he views them as a good thing as they cannot be avoided (especially when running an innovative company), after all it is from responding to and addressing mistakes and failure that the business has been able to scale so fast.
Ben remains the major shareholder and from the companies’ recent actions, it does seem like they are making changes for the better.

If we keep calling out the bullshit it makes it harder for the people get by on their looks alone as eventually people will be too smart to fall for the none sense. It’s a tough battle as we have to unlearn what people think is currently true when it’s in fact not.

I was with you until the end. They've spent the last 9 years promoting their brand on the backs of way too many influencers who pushed unhealthy, unrealistic broscience. They chased the dollars even though they knew it was morally wrong to align their brand with those people and now we're supposed to give them another chance? They aren't promoting inclusivity in fitness out of the goodness of their hearts, they're doing it because they're being pressured to. Let's be clear about that.

This. When I first looked at their stuff a few years ago I didn't even fit into the largest size. I'm a powerlifter, I train 5 days a week, based on the guys they used to promote them I should have been their key demo, but no, I'm female therefore I must be the size of a toothpick. I have noticed they have some slightly larger sizes now (I would just BARELY fit!), but you still don't really see any big thick muscle women or anyone obese.

Super informative, objective and great video as always. Though I did like the old version of gymshark, the fact that they're trying to involve the average person more is promoting health and fitness at every level, is great. Some would say it promotes being average and unhealthy though I don't think this is the case. Most of the athletes seem kind and down to earth. Promoting health and fitness can't be done in just one way, so branching out like they do will certainly reach more poeple, though parts of the fitness industry still sit on their high horse.

I'm overweight and was looking around the health food section of my grocery store. Someone with a gym shark sleeveless shirt came into the isle and started looking around. He kept glancing over as I was reading various ingredient labels. I finally chose something and he asked, "Just curious what you were looking for. Because buying that won't matter if you don't lose a bunch of weight first." --- Really? Me buying a bag of Wilde Chips instead of Ruffles is a pointless move? Oh, and what did he buy? Some Keto Oreo knockoffs. Because, of course, he's earned it.

While Gymshark basically created that marketing method in the fitness space & went down the wrong path for several years, I’m glad to see them starting to take measures to right the ship now & start using more “real” & attainable models in their campaigns.

10:36 this!!! I think too many haters in comment sections don’t understand that the majority of gymshark customers have very “normal” bodies. Most of the people I see out and about in gymshark aren’t ripped to shreds and don’t have to be to wear gymshark, so I don’t see why it’s not okay for gymshark to showcase people with “normal” bodies. People leaving hateful comments on pictures of people without shredded bodies on gymshark‘s IG just further pushes society’s unrealistic body standards and causes people with body image issues to potentially dislike themselves and feel unwelcome to “become fit”

And that is that obese people want to be seen as people who are on the same level as Chris Bumstead for example, and they want their bodies to be seen as beautifull.
That by definition is bodydysmorphia, and they're trying to label everyone who criticises them as being guilty of "fatshaming".
