Awesome. I just got five of them about 4" long in a 300 gallon tank with a school of 20 silver dollars, some clown loach and bristle nose pleco and two angels. Tank is planted with anubias and plenty of driftwood. These guys are a little feisty and pushing the loaches around but I will add more hiding spots and tubes and I'm sure all will work out.
Thanks my friend. If you're curious about the tank - I have a video on my channel (minus the Geos in there). I'll have to do some re-arranging and then I'll do another video.

I have always loved this cichlid. I'm setting up a 55 gallon with a DSB (lots of wood and large smooth rocks). I have large school of Columbian tetras I plan to move into this tank along with a school of bronze Corys and a large Angelfish. My water runs soft (dgH 8°) and pH runs 6.6 to 6.8. Would a single male or female Tapajos work? Or 2 females/2 males? I dont want a breeding pair.
Hi Kyle - I got them from one of my local fish clubs. We don't ship fish at this time, but if you're looking for some these actually originated from Imperial Tropicals and they do ship fish for free with orders over approximate $45 I think. You should check them out.
Another place you could find these would be "the wet spot". They are huge fish store out of Portland, Oregon and will probably ship them wherever you need weather permitting.
It would depend on the dimensions and the other inhabitants. I have some 33 gallon longs (4ft long) that would probably work for a pair, but that would be the only fish in there besides a BN pleco.
Nice looking Tapajos! I'm curious how old they are in your video? I ask because I'm raising 4 in a 110 gallon and they are nowhere near that size. I'm starting to think maybe mine are stunted, if possible.
Molly Wills I’m not exactly sure because they were already about that size when I got them at a fish auction. My fry grew very slowly - it took them 1.5 or more to reach that size? Maybe longer.

I got the idea of geo and severum from watching your videos lol. Thanks . I'll post a video soon hope you'll like my setup lol
I keep these guys with neon tetras, glowlight tetras, and black skirt tetras, as well as bristle nose plecos and coryadoras. My only regrest is I wish i had got colombian red and blue tetras instead of the black skirt tetras. But any way my point is they do well with glowlight tetras and broad body tetras.

I'm looking at getting a couple pairs of geo heckelii next as i feel I've got the ram breeding down pat. Here in Aus it's very hard to find some geo's
Hello, I bought my female geo brasiliensis last saturday and I haven't seen her eating. She is swimming around and looks very comfortable in the tank. Her tank mates are 1 angel, and 5 black skirt tetras.
When that happens I usually try something no fish can resist - frozen blood worms. If they are not eating that after a week or so of being in a new tank they may have an internal parasite.
Good morning, I have bought one of these which I’m having delivered today and I’m going to grow out and put into a 520 L tank I have plans for the this year. I’m going to put some clown Loach and a plaque into the 520 L but I would also like to put some mumbuna cichlids. Would you recommend any that would get on well with the geophagus Tapajos?
Will one of these guys be unhappy in a community tank without other geophagus? I've read they should be kept in groups, but it potentially looks like a spectacular addition to my community tank.
I've been researching quite a bit on how I wanted to stock my new (to me) 55 gallon tank, I settled on geophagus, I saw a tank online with tapajos and lemon tetra, well while I was at a chain pet store I saw some serpae tetra and on an impulse bought them thinking they would look good with the tapajos. Come to find out the sepae's are apparently different than the lemon tetra and have a bit of a reputation as fin nippers...that being said, should I still introduce the young geo's to the tank with the serpae already there and wait? Or is there too much of a risk to the young geo's? The tetras look pretty young as well, there are currently 9 serpae in my 55 gallon with a couple plants.
I generally keep them between 78-80 degrees. In a large tank the corys might be ok, but Tapajos do like their bottom area. The rainbow shark could be a problem when the shark gets to full size. It might work, but you will have to see how they do.
Can i keep 1 geophagus tapajos with 2 blue acaras and 3 or so Synodontis petricola in a 125x40x40 (53 gallon) aquarium? Ps. I have some goeramis, so can i keep them also in that ?
Do you think a group of 5 would be okay in a 90gl running 2 Tidal 110's, with a Red Spot Severum, Electric Blue Acara, Angelfish & Pearl Gourami? Possibly a group of 7 Diamond Tetra as well?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Hmm, I was really liking the idea of a school those guys. Thanks for all your help & any insight you can provide here.
I’m planning out a 39 gallon community, do you think one of these would be alright in there? I think they’re so awesome but I’d hate to put it in an inappropriately sized tank. If my tank is too small, do you have any smaller geophagus species that will work in a community? Thanks!
I have 2 tapajos and i am having trouble with them fighting, currently got them seperated to give eachother a break, would getting more be a good idea?
Trying to encourage my six 2 year old’s to breed. Run my 100 gallon tank at 26.5c, with weekly water changes. Driftwood, plants and slate in the tank with a fine sand bottom. Four females and two males in the tank. Any tips?
Depends on how many you keep. A group would do best in a 75 gallon or larger. One could be ok in a 40 breeder. A lof of the medium-s-zed tetras or rasboras, severums, smaller South American cichlids like nanoluteus, sajica, multispinosa, could all work.
Jason, I’m looking at moving my 2 8 inch oscars from a 55 to a 210. I would really love to add some geophagus, my LFS has some 5 inch surinamensis and sub 4 inch tapajos. What would you do? Thanks
This is going to be such a cool tank! They are both great fish. I have found the tapajos to be a little more aggressive, but not overly so. I personally like the surinamensis a little more once full grown, but both a great! The tapajos will stay a little smaller too.
How many (if any) would you think could work in a 55 gallon with 5 or so angels? Would they bother each other in your opinion? I’ve had an empty 55 for a couple years, and I’d like to start it up in the next few months and have been looking for smaller species Geo stocking ideas
I have mixed them in the past. Still, a back plan might be a good idea. If anyone starts breeding there could be issues. I might just go with one given the angels will get big.
Prime Time Aquatics Ok thanks a lot! Great video, I’ve seen some info about them saying they liked small groups like 4-8, I just didn’t know if they would be ok as a solo specimen or not?
Prime Time Aquatics Ok awesome, if keeling a solo Tapajos with 5 angels in a 55 gallon, planted (java fern attached on driftwood) and sand, what would be a decent Tetra to have as a school? 6.8 ph, 2GH, 2KH, 77-79 degrees
Hello, I am looking for some recommendations. I had a 32.5 gallon fluval flex. I just upgraded to a innovation marine aio 50 gallon lagoon. I have 4 apisto triple reds, about 10 cardinal tetras, 4 cherry Barb's, and 4 Otos. I am looking for a little bigger fish to keep with these if at all possible. Any recommendations and should I just get 1 or a pair male/female?
For me personally, I would probably stay with smaller apistos/rams/nanacara/ivanacara. Maybe the biggest I would go is an Electric Blue Acara. All are awesome!
Hey, I have 4 geophagus Tapajos with 2 senegal bichir & 2 spotted raphael catfish. My tank is maybe 50% gravel and 50% sand at the bottom. I've had them for 2 weeks (got all the fishes together) and they're doing fine, but I've been reading they need full sand tanks ? If they had gravel at the store I bought them at and they're still super small, do you think they'll be fine with the gravel in my aquarium ?
Right now I have a 75 gallon with seven Geophagus pellegrini on gravel and a Geophagus surinamensis in our 150 also on gravel. All have lived a long a healthy life in those tanks without issue. However, my strong preference is to keep geos on sand and if/when I move them, they will be on a sand substrate.
Yes, but the tetras are really good at picking off babies. It might be beneficial to remove the fry as soon as you see them (at least some of the fry).
Depends on your goals. If I just wanted something cool to look at in a community tank I would only get one. If you wanted to get a group, that is certainly doable, but the larger the tank the better. I have four in the 55 gallon, but I don't think that is ideal. If you go the community route, if they start to breed they will push all the other fish to the corners of the tank.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks so much for replying! I keep 3 severums, 2 Gold One Green, in a 75 gallon atm, I really wanted to add a tank mate that was different and love the look of some Geos I just didn't know if I could just have the one as I don't want to add a group and overstock. I think given the tank size now, the fact that all my fish are juveniles and after watching lots of videos I'm gonna go for a Gold Saum instead though. Upgrading tank down the line will be no issue atall if its needed, I know that for sure so I think it should work out nicely, hope I am correct. I guess adding the geo too would be over stocking right?
There is a potential of hybridization. Also, sometimes males will fight with one another. I generally only keep one type of geophagus in a tank at a time. If you try it, just have a back up plan in case they start to fight.
Nice looking Geos!! I have a few tank mate questions. I have 3 geos around 2-3 inches, and was wondering could they be housed with African Peacocks? Also, do you have a suggestion on starting a South American tank- using my 3 Geos in a 125. Thanks again
Hi Sir, I have around 200L water capacity tank. 3.5*1.5*1.5 feet tank. How many red head tapajos geophagus can I keep this tank for long term? Kindly Response sir. Thank You!
hi jason, i really wanna have tapajos, and someone is selling me a 90 gallon tall... I believe it has the same footprint as a 55g right? do you think they' would be ok there? or should I get something shorter but with more footprint?
The 90 gallon tanks I have seen have all been 48" long and 18" wide. If that is the case you should have plenty of space. If it really does have a 48x12.5 foot print you could still do one for sure.
I had that mix in my 75 gallon with minimal problems once the green severum established himself as the dominant fish. The tapajos just stayed on his side of the tank and it worked.
5 лет назад
Prime Time Aquatics I have 2 green Severums who are very aggressive and they dominate bully and have already killed 4 of my fire mouth Cichlid... Just don’t know what to do....
The only difference I see are the fins are a little longer and the males have slightly more color. I with one on its own it would be hard to determine if it is a male or female unless it's older and the fins are really long.
I’ve just been given a beautiful new tank, 102 litres, that’s about 22 gallons I think. I’d love one of the geophagus species, are any suitable in size?
Hi Deanne! Of all the ones I have I would probably go with a Geophagus tapajos. Great color and it doesn't get super huge like the rest do! A lot of the other Geos can easily get 8" or more. Good luck!

Tapajos is about as small as they get. I probably wouldn't try them in anything small than a 40 breeder (36x18 foot print) for a dedicated pair.
Would I be able to keep rainbows with these?
I don’t see why not?
I have 2 tapajos and i am having trouble with them fighting, currently got them seperated to give eachother a break, would getting more be a good idea?
Depends on the size of the tank?
Get a couple more
This fish are very aggressive
I want to buy a small Tapajós. May be around an 1.5 in. Could I quarantine in a 5.5 tank? He will move to a 75G.
If it’s just one that will probably be fine
Nice
Do you think this will go with full grown harlequin rasboras
In a good sized tank - probably.
Prime Time Aquatics its a 75 gallon planted and with quite some obstacles for hiding
Trying to encourage my six 2 year old’s to breed. Run my 100 gallon tank at 26.5c, with weekly water changes. Driftwood, plants and slate in the tank with a fine sand bottom.
Four females and two males in the tank.
Any tips?
They're getting about the age for breeding. Sometimes blood worms can help.
How big tank do they need? Tankmates?
Depends on how many you keep. A group would do best in a 75 gallon or larger. One could be ok in a 40 breeder. A lof of the medium-s-zed tetras or rasboras, severums, smaller South American cichlids like nanoluteus, sajica, multispinosa, could all work.
They are also great for keeping the tank clean
Jason, I’m looking at moving my 2 8 inch oscars from a 55 to a 210. I would really love to add some geophagus, my LFS has some 5 inch surinamensis and sub 4 inch tapajos. What would you do? Thanks
This is going to be such a cool tank! They are both great fish. I have found the tapajos to be a little more aggressive, but not overly so. I personally like the surinamensis a little more once full grown, but both a great! The tapajos will stay a little smaller too.
Can these fish be kept with things like, angelfish, torpedo barbs or silver sharks
In the right size tank I think so.
When does the red start to show? I have one for about 2 months now and not sure if it is a tapajos
Usually when they get about 2.5-3" or so?
They seemed just fine when I kept them solo.
*KEEPING not keeling
Is it not possible to keep Geo's in a tank with pebble substrate then?
It's possible, but probably not ideal.
How many for a 125 gallon? And can I keep dwarf cichlids with them?
6 or so can work. Other cichlids - maybe, just depends on the type
Hello,
I am looking for some recommendations.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics what would be your preference and color for a Geo sand substrate?
Would they still breed with some kind of tetra above them?
Yes, but the tetras are really good at picking off babies. It might be beneficial to remove the fry as soon as you see them (at least some of the fry).
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok cool I'm assuming pulling the eggs would work also? I have an empty 75 gallon I'm set on these guys
Can you keep just one or two? Do I need a group?
What micro pellets sir?
We have been using Northfin and the fish seem to love it!
Wbat do u think of mixing them different types of geophagus
There is a potential of hybridization. Also, sometimes males will fight with one another. I generally only keep one type of geophagus in a tank at a time. If you try it, just have a back up plan in case they start to fight.
Nice looking Geos!!
I have a few tank mate questions. I have 3 geos around 2-3 inches, and was wondering could they be housed with African Peacocks? Also, do you have a suggestion on starting a South American tank- using my 3 Geos in a 125.
Thanks again
Can u put them with some calvus Cichlids?
Probably not - only because I don't think the Calvus would get any food - these guys eat to aggressively.
You think these would be okay with Angels? I’ve read these are relatively peaceful when by themselves.
I've mixed them before without issues in a 75 gallon.
Hi Sir, I have around 200L water capacity tank. 3.5*1.5*1.5 feet tank. How many red head tapajos geophagus can I keep this tank for long term? Kindly Response sir. Thank You!
A pair should work ok.
hi jason, i really wanna have tapajos, and someone is selling me a 90 gallon tall...
Can you put them by themselves with angelfish
Possibly in a large enough tank - I'm thinking 75 gallons or above.
Prime Time Aquatics
I was thinking a 55 gallon with just 2 angelfish and one geophagus, any good?
It might work - just keep an eye on them and have a back-up plan.
Can I keep these with Red parrot, Firemouth, Yellow Severum, Green Terror, Oscar ?
The only thing that may be an issue later is the Green Terror, and possibly the firemouth, but the severums and oscar probably.
i have two frontosa, would 3 0r 4 of geophagus be ok with these or not, 240litre tank
Tough to say - optimal water parameters are different, but I have a Altifrons and Front in a 150 with no issues.
Can I keep these along with green severum,?
I had that mix in my 75 gallon with minimal problems once the green severum established himself as the dominant fish. The tapajos just stayed on his side of the tank and it worked.
Prime Time Aquatics I have 2 green Severums who are very aggressive and they dominate bully and have already killed 4 of my fire mouth Cichlid... Just don’t know what to do....
would be great if you showed pictures of the other fish you are talking about.
Would you put clown loaches with these fish??
Sure. That can be a good mix.
Thank you
How do i see the difference between male and female? I have one atm but need another one and i want the opposit sex for it.
The only difference I see are the fins are a little longer and the males have slightly more color. I with one on its own it would be hard to determine if it is a male or female unless it's older and the fins are really long.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I see, thanks for the info.
Good luck!
What about them with angelfish?
That can work.
Could i mix these with goldfish?
I probably wouldn't. The temps are too different.
Is it a freshwater or saltwater fish?
Freshwater!
Are they red face tapajos?
I’ve only heard them called Red Head?
Thank you 😊
