"And I need you more than want you. And I want you for all time". One of the best lines ever.
This was one of several Jimmy Webb songs Glen recorded. They were pretty much all hits.
I was a lineman for 30 years, love that line 'I can hear you through the whine'. The writer must have had some experience with my job. Winter snow and spring rain caused a lot of whine and made me whine.
Jimmy Webb, amazing writer.
Jimmy Webb was the writer. Never a lineman
I was a lineman for 45 years, climbing with you hooks on unstepped poles in stormy weather could get tiresome that was for sure, great song, thank you Glen, R I P.
@@daleamaral5195 I feel your pain, 30 years was enough for me. Don't know if Jimmy meant power or phone lineman as power deals with overloads and phone deals with whine.
Probably my favourite Glen Campbell song.
…”and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time”. Wow, that’s freakin deep. One of the best lines about desire of the heart.
Retired lineman........one of my favorites. It gives off the essence of the job of a trouble man
That was were my brother started out in 1973 after his stint in the Army. Worked as a pole jockey for Ma Bell.
"By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is one of Glen's classic songs.
Must listen, for sure!
Memories Glen was all over the radio and TV in the 70's. Nice to hear this again thanks Phil and Sam
Our pleasure!
I was 10 years old when this came out. I loved it then and I love it now, never gets old. Thanks for playing it.
Jimmy Webb has been a great songwriter for decades. His song MacArthur Park won a Grammy for Waylon Jennings and the Kimberly’s and was also a huge hit for Richard Harris.
This is IMHO his best song, hands down. It is so beautiful and the message is haunting.
I like By the Time I Get to Phoenix probably more.
I completely agree! This is one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time. 🥰
“ I Need You More than Want You and I Want You for All Time” what a Powerful Romantic Line❤😭
By the Time I get to Phoenix --- a great pop song for Glen
One of the greatest songs of all time.
Yes! And by one of the greatest songwriters of all time: Jimmy Webb.
I grew up listening to Glen Campbell's music. He was one of the most talented entertainers & guitarists in the world. He was also a great singer. He had a lot of hits such as "Gentle On My Mind", "By the Time I Get To Phoenix", "Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife", "Galveston", "Try A Little Kindness", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Southern Nights" etc. Sadly he got Alzheimer's later in life. The last song he recorded was "I'm Not Gonna Miss You".
Yes! This is the list! The last one being a heart breaker.
I was drinking coffee in Sun Drug store in Pittsburgh at 6 AM, while waiting for the Federal Building to open. I was being sworn in to the Navy, and catching the plane out that day in 1968. Brings back many memories of time, loves, and friends, lost in the past. Please do Glen's song, "FATE OF MAN" next. I think you'll love it.
A great reaction to not only one of the greatest pop song of all time, but also one of the greatest song productions of all time.
This was written by the great Jimmy Webb (“Up, Up and Away”, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”, “MacArthur Park” and many others. A Brian Wilson level songwriting and production genius).
This was kind of the earliest pop/country mix of music.
The inspiration, IIRC, the inspiration was Jimmy Webb seeing a guy hanging by his safety belt working on a utility line out in the middle of nowhere.
Glen was part of The Wrecking Crew before going out on his own and what an entertainer he was. He was the whole package like Roy Clark and others.
One of his last songs was I Wont Miss You about his journey through Alzheimer's. It will just make you cry.
Phil and Sam, that guitar solo was Glen playing a Danelectro Bass guitar that he borrowed from fellow Wrecking Crew member, Carol Kaye. Love the sound of that instrument. Has that old classic Western Marlboro Man sound to it. Gives a great southwestern or midwestern flavor to accentuate the imagery of a long lonely two lane highway out on the plains.
And yes, Jimmy Webb's songwriting is some of the best.. He actually wrote this song specifically for Glen to record. He knew Glen's vocal style would be perfect for it.
My favorite Glen Campbell song. Thanks for doing this one!
From what I understand, Jimmy Webb had left an unfinished version of the song for Glenn to read. They didn't communicate for weeks, leading Jimmy to think Glenn wasn't interested. When they finally met, Jimmy told Glenn that he might like it better when he added the final verse. Glenn told him, "Wichita Lineman? We already recorded that. It was great!" Which is why the song ends like it does, without a clear end verse.
A gentle hit from the Spring of 68--when we needed it.
Glenn was part of a 60s studio musician group called The Wrecking Crew and was on many 60's tunes. This was the start of solo career and was so popular, he had his own TV Variety show! My mother always loved the song Dreams of The Everyday Housewife. My faves was his mid 70s songs, Rhinestone Cowboy, Southern Nights, and Country Boy ( You Got Your Feet in L.A.). 😊
Something I always loved about this song that i don't think many people notice is when Glen says the word line, the music evokes the sound of a telegraph.
Rest in Peace dearest Glen. This is a masterful homage to those hard working men and women. Notice the strings at the end of "on the line" it sounds like the electricity flashing down the wires.
I have watched "linemen" working at 3 am on my road in the middle of the night in driving rain to get the power back up. Heros to me.
50+ years later and I still get chills. 😊
One of Glen's best songs, sweet and simple.
Possible the greatest song ever written, and with Glen Cambell on vocal and guitar it is almost perfection. So talented was Glenn. Greatness is when someone like Glenn seems to be able to perform this with such consumante ease. Majestic and truly special. The ending is a little like a later song by ELO and "Telephone Line" vibes
Glen was an essential member of The Wrecking Crew and you've heard him play many times without knowing.
Few were more popular on the radio or TV in the late 60s & early 70s. Even landed a role in 1969's True Grit!
Sam & Phil, this great song brings me to tears. It was released in 1968, and the great Los Angeles studio sessions musicians, The Wrecking Crew, provided the beautiful instrumentation. The opening guitar riff , a descending six-note intro, was provided by the great bassist, Carol Kaye. I was born in 1958 and grew up listening to the greatest music ever. So I greatly appreciate when you react to the best music ever. Thank you 🙏 Sam & Phil.
This is by the brilliant and prolific songwriter Jimmy Webb, who wrote several of Campbell's hits and many other great works.
This is one of my favorite songs.
Song STILL gives me chills all these years later
Great song- RIP Glen!
when i was a kid you could really hear the old bare wires sing. but those have all gone away
This is one of those songs that remind me of my childhood. Beautiful song
For some reason the guitar solo in this song reminds me of old Marlboro cigarette commercials I remember as a kid back around the time this song came out. Marlboro was using a famous icon about that time known as, The Marlboro Man". The commercials would always show this masculine cowboy on horseback in western settings and even with modern cities and landmarks behind him as he lights up a Marlboro cigarette. Everywhere that cowboy went and lit up a Marlboro, they said, "This is Marlboro Country", in the commercials. Years later they banned cigarette commercials from TV, but you could always find the Marlboro Man in magazines.
Fantastic song. Never get tired hearing this. For the last 50 some years.
On my transistor radio when I was a preteen and after in the mid sixties , and on tv , this song was constantly played along with all the pop hits.
Love you guys on your reactions to all the great music
I saw Jimmy Webb's piano show in Palm Springs 2 weeks ago. He said Glen Campbell was his best friend and Glen sang about 90 of Jimmy's songs. I recommend seeing Jimmy if he plays near you - he tells great stories in between songs about Frank Sinatra, Glen, the Laurel Canyon days, etc.
Between 1965-1969, the amazing song writer Jimmy Webb wrote so many hits for many amazing musicians like Glen Campbell, when Webb was between ages 19 & 23!
Hey guys! Most people don't get what an amazing career Glen had. He was part of The Wrecking Crew (recognized as the greatest studio musicians around) in the early sixties. When Brian Wilson stopped touring with the Beach Boys, Glen took his place. He made hit records. He had his own television show. He was a movie star. There is a funny interview clip of Glen telling how John Wayne offered him a co-starring role in "True Grit." You can find it on RUclips. And sadly, you should react to his last-ever song, "I'm Not Gonna Miss You," in which he describes his own battle with dementia. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Glens pronunciation of words is really more than many country singers. All of his songs easily crossed over or were just played on all stations…l amazing.
The right adjective is "poignant" IMHO. This song is full of yearning...desire mixed with sadness. Perfect song.
"Galveston" or "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" should be next up guys!
Jimmy Webb was a song writing Guru. Glenn and Jimmy together were unbeatable.
Great song with Glen’s smooth and soothing vocals and the Wrecking Crew backing him. Back in that era of the 1960’s to get radio air play the songs were limited to about 3 minutes max so there were not many if any long solos from the single hit versions !
Opening bass riff and all but the bass solo in the break which was done by Glenn- wrecking crew artist Carol Kaye
My favourite line in this song was always: "And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time."
Jimmy Webb the songwriter. He and Glen had a connection in the 60s
I tune in when I see the title of a song I like. And here I am. 😊
This song along with the song ‘McCarthur Park’ were written by the songwriter Jimmy Webb. Classic! Iconic!
Glenn was a in demand session player and he was in the beach boys for a while
Almost got to bag his groceries .. worked at market near CBS studios where he was filming his variety show .. and there he was a few isles down .. great artist .. love this song
Classic... Such a haunting story of lonesomness. A weary man missing his woman. How can any writer ever touch the lyrics "And I need you more than want you-And I want you for all time." The first part of that lyric throws you off because want and need should be equal in true love. But then the 2nd part of that lyric throws a knockout punch "And I want you for all time". So Want and Need are chasing each other ad infinitum. Thanks as always for the stellar reactions that keep great music like this alive
One of the songs with the most radio airplay in the 20th century. Big hit on country and top 40 charts
Galveston, Rhinestone Cowboy, I’m Not Gonna Miss You, Live versions of William Tell Overture and Amazing Grace.
Always one of my favorite Campbell songs..he also does great guitar, banjo solos and duets I love..thanks
Can’t go wrong with Glen 💕
loved him! my country roots will never leave me! now i listen to all kinds of music but i grew up in the country!
The line about his love for his woman is a great line. I need you more than I want you, and I want you forever (paraphrasing!). By The Time I Get to Phoenix has to be next
The singing group, A Girl Named Tom, does an excellent version of this song. I saw them last year in an exclusive private concert on board the Sky Princess sailing the Caribbean.
Wrecking Crew Musicians of which Glen was a member of,i recommend you watch the documentary/film of them ,you will be amazed on just how many well known songs they played on
So many of my favorite reaction channel duos have split for various reasons. It's so good to see you guys and your stability, respect for classics, and the music variety you all play. I've discovered some great music through you all I might not have heard before. I love you all. Keep the good stuff coming.
Great song and production.
Sam was right on target-“Soothing feelings” certainly abound in many of Glenn’s songs. Wonderful review of a great song that brings back many memories, some pleasant, but others still evoke pain.
Glen liked singing songs about American towns and cities. Wichita, Galveston, Phoenix.....
many don't know he was a "world class" guitar player and sought after "studio" musician, an original member of "The Wrecking Crew"!
My best friend used to call me the Wichita Lineman still searching for that lost love.
Nice shout out to the working man. Glen was a studio guitarist with The Wrecking Crew however his solo career was primarily about his singing.
My favorite by him and like the comment below one of the best lines of all time in a love song.
This is one of several that he did (and boy, Mr. Webb could sure write!), That are so good at evoking emotion ! The other two I’m thinking of, in which his voice is the star of the songs are “By the Time I Get To Phoenix“ And”Galveston “. When you get a chance, give Them a listen!
Just a great song and recording. My favorite by Glenn. It hits on all aspects. Lyrics, vocals.arrangement and orchestration, story telling and the intangible of how it makes me feel. And while Glen was certainly an excellent guitarist his major commercial success came from his vocals. His guitar wizardry was not featured so prominently in his hits.
Glenn also stared in the movie True Grit with John Wayne. He was a very talented man.
Another amazing Jimmy Webb song!
Excellent review. . .Oh, and by the way, Wichita is the largest city in Kansas. We here in Wichita love that a beautiful song like this featured our city name. Again, very good reaction. You really pointed out the nuances of this classic. Jimmy Webb wrote it, but it took Glen Campbell to really make it famous!
Yeah, but he's dissin your power lines....
@@kbrewski1 Yeah maybe, but he's doin' more "fixin" than "dissin". . .that is when he's not listening to his lady love "through the wires."
@BluesImprov
I wonder if the BTK killer listened to Wichita Lineman🤔.
Great video, Phil and Sam, and great song! I've known for years that Jimmy Webb wrote it after seeing a lineman in Oklahoma, but I wondered why it was called Wichita Lineman. Wichita is the most populous city in KANSAS, which is north of Oklahoma. Then I read that Jimmy saw the lineman in the Oklahoma panhandle and started thinking up scenarios for him. For one thing, he imagined the lineman living in a small town close to Wichita, not a terribly long distance from the Oklahoma/Kansas state line. That justified the song title.
Growing up in the 70s I had to listen to this type of music. Then I found KISS, classic rock and 80s metal. But this song is one of my all time favourites. It gives me goosebumps every time.
A lineman works on the intercity high voltage power lines, not the telephone lines, at least back when this song came out. Similar work though. Funny thing, when this song came out, I thought he sang "I hear you singing in the wire. I can hear you thru the wine." As if while he was working the sounds from the wind blowing past the wire made him imagine her voice singing to him, and when he finished for the day he sat drinking wine and missing her and he would imagine her talking. It seemed to make sense. Of course, "whine" also makes sense, given the hum you get off power lines.
Maybe the greatest unfinished song ever recorded. Jimmy Webb had only written two verses. Glen liked it so much that they just did the third verse as an instrumental, ending with the chorus. And that beautiful musical sound is The Wrecking Crew, of which Glen was a part at one time.
..That bass solo though....killer!
I believe that's a baritone guitar playing the solo.
Glen's buddies from the Wrecking Crew played on this, including Hal Blaine on drums and Carol Kaye on bass.
Great review Sam and Phil of one of Glen Campbell best songs ever. Beautiful Melody and the strings are so lovely. Best Wishes Sam and Phil! Keep up the great work guys.☺
I saw Glen on his Farewell Tour in 2012. He had already been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at that time but his vocal talent and guitar skills were perfect. He began his career as a session musician with LA’s Wrecking Crew and played on songs from by The Beach Boys to Frank Sinatra.
Listening to this song at our beach cabin in Galveston, TX on an old AM radio. Good memories.
Glen Campbell was a great guitarist and singer He could not be pigeonholed into country or pop music so his classification became awesome
Haven't heard this song in decades, but still remember the chorus like it was yesterday. For some reason, it brings me to tears!
Please make sure to listen to "By The Time I Get To Phoenix"--another great and moving song by Glen, also written by Webb!
Actually quite a sad song when you listen to the lyrics ... and I love that need and want line, so cool! :)
He was a prominent member of the wrecking crew before having solo success.
My grandma listing to this on her AM radio in her kitchen.. long ago
I like his "Try a Little Kindness."
It's referring to a lineman, working on telephone lines, they also refer to lineman as people that work on powerlines
Telephone and power lineman...and back in the 1960s they werent using bucket trucks and hydraulics, they were climbing the poles with "climbers"...sharp steel hooks attached to leather straps on their legs that bit into the wood on the telephone pole giving them more grip and helping them ascend up the poles....
My 2nd favorite country song of all time. (#1 is "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by Hank Williams)
You should try Glen doing the "William Tell Overture" aka the theme on the Lone Ranger TV show. Also "Galveston" was a hit for Campbell back in the day. Campbell was well respected in musical circles so much so that Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eddie Van Halen would ask Glen's friends if they could talk Campbell into giving them a guitar lesson or two.
love it saw him in concert he was so great - try Galveston
Great tune, never dates👌🏻
Back then, linemen were unsung heros of the plains. Power grids were shaky at best, and battery technology was limited to a D cell. It was also tornado alley so that made it much harder for them.
The writer of this song was the great jimmy webb and it was one of his greatest songs ever and glenn brought it to life .
Im 56 years old and I've listened to this song hundreds of times and it still gives me goosebumps.
I still can't understand why it took so long to induct him into the country music hall of fame, but if i had to guess I'd say it was because of the fact that glenn wouldn't kiss Nashvilles ass RIP Glenn they'll never be another like you.
