I was extremely privileged to work a little with Karen and Rich. They were always super nice to me. They were perfectionists, and it showed. Karen really liked playing the drums (and she was really good at it), but was finally convinced to be the featured voice for the Carpenters. I personally think she was the very best contemporary alto of my time. She had been having some mental issues, and, sadly, finally succumbed to them February 4, 1983 at only 32 years old. It was a terrible loss, and I will always miss her.

As someone who came of age adoring Karen, I clearly remember the last time that I saw her performing on TV. Her physical appearance at the time was like a kick in the gut to me. I could not understand how this was being allowed to happen to her. I cried when she died, and I still cry when I hear her voice. Every time.

To say she was having “mental issues” is so crass and unfeeling-and inaccurate-I doubt you worked with them. She had anorexia and died from it. The mother’s favoritism of Richard is widely known.

Karen Carpenter had one of the most crystal clear stunning voices of the '70s. It's unforgettable and remember this is live with no autotune.

    Hi Lilly,
The Carpenters were a brother sister duo (Richard and Karen), who performed from 1969 - 1983. They were the top selling act of the 1970s, and have sold over 150 million albums. Relative to their musical genre, they were known as an easy listening/soft rock act.
Karen was known to have perfect pitch with a three octave range, and would often nail her recordings on the first take (she was known as a one-take wonder). She had such a unique tone and timbre to her voice (particularly in her lower register) that even 50 years later, it is instantly recognizable. She was also an extremely accomplished drummer who had no problem singing and drumming at the same time. Richard was a musical genius in his own right. A keyboard prodigy, who selected and/or wrote all of their music to specifically take advantage of Karen's voice. He also was an extremely gifted arranger and producer. They would often spend months in the studio to create their albums, with their signature overdubbed harmonies.
In short, Karen's story is a tragic one, as she died at the age of just 32 due to complications from Anorexia, but they left us with such a rich legacy of music (12 albums of original material over a 14 year career). I highly recommend watching the documentary: "Karen Carpenter, Starving for Perfection" to better understand her impact on the music industry.
It's safe to say there will never be another more beautiful voice than Karen Carpenter.

Anorexia nervosa was little known at the time. There are interviews with her near the end when she looks emaciated but nobody knew she needed help. Karen's death shed light on eating disorders and I hope saved many from a similar sad end.

I was in high school when I first heard Karen Carpenter's amazing tone. At a time when psychedelic rock/acid rock was popular. I was trying to find my place as a young man. But I quietly confessed to loving her music. I've seen several of your reviews, such as the Righteous Bros, Unchained Melody, and I'm impressed with your discerning, detailed ear. Hearing the movements within the orchestra playing on that KC record. Keep up the good work! It's a real pleasure watching a young woman like you appreciating the roots of today's music.

Just a pure angelic voice that brought chills to you. Sadly, Anorexia nervosa took her way to soon and robbed all of us music lovers of her once in a lifetime talent. She will always be my #1 female vocalist.

One of the greatest compliments and also statement of admiration was from Frank Sinatra about Karen Carpenter . Old Blue Eyes declared that Karen Carpenter was the only woman singer that he would pay for to hear sing. Not only a wonderful drummer but she is also underrated at her interpretation of lyrics. The subtle ways she sings words, slyly changes the pacing, and how she becomes part of the instrumental sounds is breathtaking. She could have been a big band singer, a nightclub feature, or headliner of a variety show. She was talent but also a professional.

I've long wondered if her body issues would have become so severe, so young, if she hadn't been pushed out from behind the drums. Her drum skills compare well with any top tier drummer you want to name.

    • @PAT8888-is2pd
      @PAT8888-is2pd 4 часа назад

@michaelsoper3610 As I understand it,her body issues came about from a combination of the recording producers and certain family members (not in the group), pushing her to lose weight so she wouldn't look heavy on camera. So her coming out front would definitely have aggravated the situation. It's a shame. I always thought she would have looked so much better if she wasn't so painfully thin.

Lilly, you have just listened to the greatest female vocalist of all time imho. Karen was a gift to us but her sad life and struggles with Anorexia eventually led to her leaving us at the age of 32. Research her story and how the life and love she wanted was never attained. When she died a little bit of the good in this world died with her. I cried when she passed. There are great singers, legendary singers and then there is Karen Carpenter. So when you hear that pain in her voice, it is very real and it is heartbreaking. She can bring us to tears. This is Soft Rock, Adult Contemporary, Easy Listening. RIP Karen, you are greatly missed. As to your question of greatest song of the past, well, that depends on the decade and genre my friend. Here are a few of my faves: The Forties: Possibly "Sing, Sing, Sing" Benny Goodman or "String of Pearls" Glenn Miller, the 50s- "Jailhouse Rock" Elvis Presley or "Que Sera, Sera" Doris Day or "You Belong to Me" Jo Stafford, 60s- "Whiter Shade of Pale" Procol Harum, "Here comes the Sun" Beatles, "Pretty Woman" Roy Orbison, the 70s: "Hotel California" Eagles, "Rocky Mountain High", "Take Me Home Country Roads"- John Denver, "Operator" Jim Croce, "Bridge Over Trouble Waters" Aretha Franklin (or Simon & Garfunkel).. too many great tunes to be honest, 80s "Shout" Tears for Fears, "Faithfully"- Journey, "One for the Mockingbird" Cutting Crew, "True" Spandeau Ballet, "Smooth Operator" Sade.. again too many tunes, 90s "I Could Fall in Love with You" Selena... about 1000 other songs on this list to be honest!

She was a very accomplished drummer that could give the rock bands of the time a strong run for their money. She was never really given the credit she was due until yrs later. I still love listening to Karen Carpenter sing, and to this day I feel so bad about her passing, especially being so young as she was at the time. You'll enjoy more Carpenters music. ----One of my favorite songs from the early 70's is 'I Can See Clearly Now (Johnny Nash, 1972).' To this day, when I hear that song, I drop what I'm doing and just listen to it as it reminds me of a great time in my life. Also, 'Tuesday Afternoon (The Moody Blues, 1968).' Karen & Richard Carpenter were brother & sister. Karen sang (and also played drums very well, mind you), and Richard played the piano and keyboards, and wrote the arrangements and also sang backup vocals. They were one of the greatest duet acts of all time! Superstar was written from the point of view of a girl who follows a rock band, and falls in love with one of the performers. She hears him on the radio, but his touring lifestyle makes it impossible for them to be together.

It was just as The Beatles were starting to fade away (as they previously dominated the airwaves) and the first song I remember was “Close To You” and the radio was playing it about 30 times a day. The bookend to that song was Carole King’s “It’s Too Late” so if you enjoyed Karen Carpenter you should really check out Carole King as they were comparable in popularity as well as their quality.

Such a pure voice. And she was quite adept on the drums.

Roy Orbison's "Crying", The Carpenters were great. You should listen to more of their songs. Love watching your reactions! Thanks for sharing! 420

A once in a lifetime voice. Hauntingly beautiful and unforgettable. That was her brother singing backup. Listen to any of their hits and you will be amazed. Enjoy the journey.

Nobody could sing like Karen Carpenter, the best female vocalist of all time in my books. She could play the drums brilliantly too! Unfortunately, she got extremely ill and died far too young and soon from complications from anorexia. She lives on through her music, though. She did tons of great songs!

I don't think an "all-time" favorite song exists because as you have learned during your reviews that each artist is "greatest of all time". The individual talent and uniqueness of everyone you have reviewed has impacted you uniquely in each of their songs. Karen was just a gift, just like the others. You are a gift by being vulnerable and revealing just how skillful these people were and sharing that vulnerability with others. Your reviews and reactions give hope to other generations that the artists talents will live on. I think angels are all around us doing amazing things to remind us of how great our God is. No harm to enjoy the music of today, but never forget yesterday.

What a thoughtful share about your personal journey, Lilly. As a 73 year old who got to grow up to this great music, I always love when contemporary reactors find the same richness in these tunes that I did.
Favorite oldie? Oh wow. Hundreds to choose from. This could be an interesting pairing for you: "Rhythm of the Rain," first by The Cascades (1963), and then covered brilliantly by Dan Fogelberg (1990). 😊🎶

I don't watch too many reactions but you are a very good reaction host, you are expressive and always have good things to say. You have probably heard, "Close to You," her voice is haunting. They were a brother/sister duo. check out their entire concert on BBC TV in England, in 1971 - their musical ability is phenomenal. I saw them at Washington State University in 1972. Eleven years later she would be dead of anorexia. She excelled in music in high school and I believe at least one or two members of the Carpenters played in the band with her in high school.
Her mother always favored her brother, he was trained as a classical pianist - she could never please her mother. Karen's heart gave out suddenly as a result of anorexia at their home - her mother discovered her. Also, check out some videos of her drumming. There is one video of her drumming in concert with the Carpenters. She was a phenomenal drummer.

Such emotion for a man she never met...she hears him sing I love you in a song and thinks the song is about her.... this is thr true sadness of the song ... unrequited love for a singer on the radio that she doesn't know and will never meet.
