  • Didi Chuxing President Jean Liu and Grab Group CEO Anthony Tan talk with The Verge's Walt Mossberg and Recode's Kara Swisher about operating ride-hailing services in China and Singapore, respectively. Since December, the two companies have partnered with Lyft and one another in what some have called an anti-Uber alliance. They discuss why they still subsidize ride-sharing prices even though they have raised ample cash, including, in Didi's case, $1 billion from Apple. Tan also announces that Lyft's global fleet will now be accessible through Grab's app.

    Anthony Tan was quite impressive with his responses, I expected more from Jean Liu.

      Considering he was still pretty young at the time and only worked 6 years for Grab, he is really impressive.

    wow. these interviewers were pathetic. their job is to facilitate the conversation, these two were obstructionist and disrupted the flow.

      I rewatched it. I am really impressed with Jean and Anthony. And my opinion of the interviewers dropped even more. For company leaders that open about their business, just stay out of their way. maybe say can you touch on x, but dont interrupt. The general consensus of the commenters is rude. I concur.

      100% agree. So disrespectful. Perhaps it's racism. I never saw the male host behave like that with Gates and Jobs

      Andrew Oh you even mention racism. Do you know what that means? May be you see signs of racism in the color of skin of the hosts or the fact that they speak English?

      No. He needs to learn manners in general. Found them both to be rude actually, but Walt was extremely rude I agree. I hope he isn't racist (more respectful to white people)

      the interviewers were rude even compared to American culture.

    • @dapdizzy
      @dapdizzy 5 лет назад +1

      You all need to learn what rude actually means. Just don’t try to sit behind your shell wine you’re on stage and no one will ever be rude to you. You don’t have to be sitting and holding tightly to your position that you have prepared beforehand. Instead, you should rather show how broad you are and how easy you could step out of your comfort zone, that you are so used to.
      There was nothing rude there at all.

    • @vivealexcheng
      @vivealexcheng 8 лет назад +1

      I think the interviewers also heard rumors, as journalists they are trying to get something from executives. They are insisting on the business model and subsidies, because subsidies will have to go on if your competitors are doing it. So the question leads to how the competitions between them will end. Jean dodged the question (brilliantly i would say) and got to talk about her company and their products.

    I don't understand why these two are doing such interviews? How in the world they got to interview such great names? I saw they interviewed Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, they did a pretty bad job and they still bad till today. Worse interviewers ever in my opinion!

      Making a call to hire someone to drive you home also exists in China for a long time too.
      What's new here is that you can use the mobile app to access a much more efficient network. You know your driver better (rating system), you don't need to wait (you just check in real time to find someone who can come in a few minutes), drivers don't need to wait neither (before that they have to hunt around the restaurants and network on their own with dispatchers and restaurant owners), and they can do that part-time at their wills, you pay in mobile. Basically every advantage we have with share economy.
      And because similar service exists in China for a long time, people adapted very well when a better service come out.
      So yes, IT IS AN INNOVATION!

    Those Uber dudes are really concerned about money and power. Even Jeff Bezos wasn’t like that. I’m not even mentioning Elon Musk. I wouldn’t want to work for dudes with such vision.
    I like dudes that have some more to offer than just money and power, their vision, their way of seeing tacit stuff in the everyday life. When you’re so damn focused on your taxi stuff... I don’t see real perspective here. Though it’s a good business I believe.

      Who copies who is not important. Who can develop better is . Heck, I can claim the idea came from me. Back in 1996, when I own a car and was a senior executive in a firm, I chose to ride a motorbike to and from my office to beat the traffic jam - but that is not important. Get it my friend?
