Marty Robbins Twentieth Century Drifter

- Marty's top 10 hit from 1974. Marty was widely regarded as the best non-professional driver on the Nascar circuit. Somewhat incongrous for a guy whom at one time would throw up at the thought of 'live' television yet would strap himself in the cockpit of a stock car that would hurtle round the track in excess of 180 miles an hour! That Marty was really good at it should come as no surprise because he was an outrageously gifted person. He had some bad smashes and injuries, but considered racing as no more dangerous than playing golf and to illustrate his point he said many people were killed by lightning playing golf.

I met Marty once at limerick raceway in Connecticut. He was a class act, stood for 45 mins and talked with me like we were best buds! A lot of today's stars could take a page from his play book
One of my favorite country songs of all time.
And look at that Charger with the Bobby Allison Racing sticker on the side!
Marty had many more years of racing under his belt than most people thought. NASCAR was just the next step. He was not a good driver...he was among the best. Skill, timing, temerity--Marty had it all.
Marty is and always the king of western country music
It has been said that if Marty had devoted himself just to driving stock cars, he would be one of the legends of NASCAR up with the King Richard Petty and Dale Sr. such was his talent for driving.
He good really don't think he was petty or Sr levels of good. If he had better equipment he would probably have north of ten win and a possible championship
He started very late in racing as well
Marty Robbins is the legend
Love this song. One of the greatest racing songs I've ever heard. I uploaded another great one, Dave Dudley's "Fireball Rolled a Seven," and Kyle Petty had a great tribute to his dad called "Oh King Richard."
I was only born in 1986 so obviously Marty had already passed on, but I'm a big fan of his music and racing exploits. What I love about this song is how he puts himself in the shoes of a true racing independent rather than the racing country music star.
Johnny Bond also had "Fireball" and "Junior Johnson"
I have been looking for this song. This was my late husbands favorite song. It brings back some good memories. Thanks for putting this on you tube.
I grew up on cassettes and I had one with a mix of country. I have moved to Spotify and had this song stuck in my head and found that Spotify doesn’t have it and it upsets me because Marty has the best version in my opinion
My wife and I were privileged to see Mary in concert twice. In 1980 in La Crosse, WI and in 1981 at the fair in Tomah, WI.
Wonder if NASCAR even remembers this…it was intended to honor racing and I never thought that they even acknowledged it
You can get the stories on all these races in "Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins," completely with Marty's quotes.
Called my youngest daughter, Carmen Rose. Love Marty xx
Got to see Marty play at the New Mexico State Fair Radio in the 70s. My dad was a big fan of his I still have all my dad"s albums. This song never got much air play it was always a treat when it played!
It's supposed to read New Mexico State Fair Rodeo!
+C. D. M. You are really lucky, only born in 2000 and so unfortunately never had the chance to listen, see (in person or live). Which is such a shame, he was such a good man and ever since I hear his songs I knew I wanted to meet/see him, shame I never got a chance. For once being youngs a bad thing
Charlie I was living in Roswell NM in the 70’s. The radio station I listened to ( nonstop) played it all the time. So imagine my surprise when my brother from Emmett Idaho said he’d never heard of it. He was a super Marty Robbins fan. He swore I was crazy. I sang the entire song to him. He couldn’t believe that was his song. My brother was into racing big time. The big 1/4 mile drag strip was just outside his town. He was always a body & fender man. He and his friends refinished a Plymouth business coupe and got 2nd place at the National car show in Boise Idaho. Just before he passed away. I feel bad he never got to hear Marty actually sing this song, he would have LOVED IT. ❣️🏝😎🏝❣️
Thanks so much for posting this! For some reason every time I hear this song I always think of not only Marty behind a NASCAR wheel, but I think of the Intimidator, himself.
I am not reminded of Dale Sr. just because he could not or would not do what Marty Robbins did. Marty was a good husband and there's no talk about cheating or baby mamas around him.
@@RobertWilliams-hm4st Aside from Marty, I mainly think of guys like JD McDuffie or Neil Bonnett. AFAIK, they were more faithful to their partners than Dale was. Hell, McDuffie’s probably the textbook 20th Century Drifter considering he had to run entirely on used equipment and build his own engines.
At Charlotte in the fall of 1975, there was a huge wreck in the tri-oval very early in the race. Marty qualified toward the back, and by the time he got there the track was totally blocked with 2 cars sitting with the driver's side facing traffic. He couldn't swerve low quick enough, and he hung a right turn into the wall. He ended up with the worst injury of the accident, a cut on his forehead. More than a few people said he probably saved at least one life.
butchknouse The life that he saved as heard the story was a rookie named Richard Childress. He was coming hard to where the wreck happened and seen the car in front of him with a yellow bumper check up and Marty had to much speed to stop so he took the wall according to his son said in a interview with Bill Anderson. Also on Saturday nights when he to sing after racing when he walked on stage he would set the clock back to how ever late he was. It really made Earnest Tubb mad because Earnest was suppose to his Saturday midnight show from the opory. So if Marty was 30 minutes late he set the clock back 30 minutes or so forth.
Yes a legend that was great to listen too!
Hi there Tarquin, this shows how talented Marty was.The ballads are just great, but also these uptempo songs are also wonderful.I think that when you are a fan of Marty and his voice his music is the best.Thank you again Tarquin for posting these vids,I love to here them.
thanks again tarquin. another great marty song.
He is my hero.
Back when NASCAR was worth watching
Still is, my friend. It just offers up different things than it did back when Marty, Petty Allison raced. When people went in the 40's-90's they were looking at men hustling around a car and part of the appeal of a 500 mile race is will the parts make it to the end.
Now, they're athletes who don't sit back and ride. They're up on the wheel every corner of every lap.
Not better, not worse. Just different
Thanks Heaps. It has only been 35 years since the one and only time I heard this song before.
But, you know, Marty does a good job with rockabilly styles too doesn't he.
brilliant love this song and anything marty sings just magical
Hi there Allen! How are you doing,I hope that you are doing allright.Once again I will like to thank you for keeping the memory of Marty alive. For me and I think also for manny, manny more Marty was and still is the greatest gift of God an Angel with the most beautiful voice that I ever heard.I hope that he may rest in Heavenly peace and that he may perform every night for all our dearones that past awayR.I.P.Stay healthy together with your dearones and have a wonderful live.Say hi to Tadashi.
really love this marty singing he is greatest ever a legend
Picked up stock car racing magazine.the last car Marty Robbins .Had 4 NASCAR.was a '73 Plymouth Road Runner. Built by Bobby Allison. The car was the center fold.
Bobby built several cars for his great friend.
Hello its still apparent NASCAR still leaves out one of the best raceing songs ever done by a driver of the 42 car and his dirt raceing skills maybe someday the wheel will turn right for Marty Robbins god speed bandit
marty is the greatest singer ever
God miss stock cars
great as always. thanks for posting
Thank you for posting!
He used to be a NASCAR Driver!!
Never got a win either
He hardly drove though. He scored a few top 10s for only making 4 starts per season
im not sure what you mean about making 4 starts per season, he was a regular at the old nashville track, he raced every weekend during the season and would show up late for the grand ol opry all dirty and sweaty from the track and have to hurry to throw on his costume and start his act. this man loved racing and put his heart into it all the time. please try to research more about what you are posting about a legend like this. one of his most famous comments was, i make my living singing, i race because i love it, or something close. a legend for sure and deserves more than guesses.
nascarfan88ta also when showed up at the opry late. he would turn the stage clock back to how ever late he was. Earnest Tubb had a radio show from the Opry stage that started at midnight. Marty was the last act before midnight on Saturdays at the Opry. So how ever late he was whether it was 1minute or 59 minutes he would turn that clock back to the time he was suppose to take the stage. The reason why he would race the Saturday night race at the old Nashville Speedway. And did start more then 10 races a year in NASCAR. Petty, Allison's Pearson all the greats would tell you Marty Robbins was a fierce competitor. He was also well liked in the garage
Fun Song, Go Marty Go...
I had a 72 Charger. Gone forever now...
first time I heard this song, I took the name for my cb handle.
this song is gr8
Does anybody know what happened to tarquin45 ? I know he hasn't uploaded anything in almost a decade, but he was here frequently commenting on videos etc. and I was in private contact with him up until October 2018, when all of a sudden the contact broke off. I sincerely hope he is doing okay.
In case somebody knows something, please let me know.
No clue

Alan Kulwicki Another. NASCAR Champion
Anybody know what happened to the original uploader? I was in contact with him until last October, until all of a sudden I didn't hear from him anymore.
Did you all know that his 42 eventually became Kyle Pettys number. Pretty cool
