Snowballs were very popular in the 1970's and I as a very small child loved them! My family seemed to think because they tasted like ice cream that they weren't alcoholic - or maybe they just didn't mind.
Did we invent egg nog, yes we did. Is it popular now in the UK, no it is not. Can you buy egg nog in the UK yes you can. Is egg nog easy to make for yourself, yes it is. Does Advocaat taste at little like egg nog, only a little bit. Does a snowball taste like egg nog, no it does not, but it is the drink that is closest in popularity in the UK in modern times. Advocaat (pronounced advo-carr) originated in the Netherlands. A Mexican anthropologist coined the phrase "Culture Shock" in 1929.
I always enjoy your approach and topics. Shelby’s tremendous love for egg nog and Rachael’s disdain for it is a good example of the importance of not overgeneralizing cross-cultural observations. This whole experiment reminds me of the difficulty of explaining and finding substitutes for things missed from home.
bottles of Advocaat, but more commonly Baileys Irish Cream, were gifts at Xmas. Irish coffee, is coffee with whiskey or baileys. If you have hot coffee in a 1/2 pint glass, with layer of cold Baileys on top, it looks like a Guinness.
Snowballs best recipe is advocaat, lemonade (not too much, need to retain thick texture) & a measure of brandy. Mix well. Slap a cherry in it. Drink through a straw. Never heard of using lime juice. No ice.
The drink is called Snowball in the UK. You mix in 3 quarters of Lemonade, stir to desired thickness and put a glazed cherry on top. For the record, Eggnog is an English drink from medieval times. Nog is short for noggin, a name for the drinking vessel used.
Eggnog originated here in Great Britain & is almost as old as England, that's a fact that you can trust from a comment (I'm an Historian) lol. The chances are that you've never actual had 'traditional' eggnog ( the recipe for which you can easily find online) Oh, and it's AD - VO - CAR and it's Dutch, not British.
The stuff they sell in England as 'Dutch advocaat' is NOT the same thing the Dutch sell as 'advocaat'! For one thing, Dutch advocaat is so thick you have to eat it with a spoon!
Hey Shelbey, seen you guys bang on about not being able to find egg nog in supermarkets. Truth is that it is drunk in the UK but those who do drink it wouldn't dream of purchasing it from a supermarket, they would actually make it themselves, as it takes about 30 mins, generally I think we make things using raw ingredients more in the UK than the USA, perhaps less processed food, sauces etc.
Ice with everything... .Ugh! lol. I' m currently living in the States, everyone's eggnog is different. Most of them aren't creamy and don't taste anything like advocaat. Southern comfort was really creamy a bit like advocaat but super sweet and I really don't think it had any alcohol in it. Also not sure if there are eggs in eggnog. I tried to get Advocaat here in California, unfortunately they don't seem to sell it here because of raw eggs. I could order it for $17 a bottle but shipping was about $40 since they all come from Europe. Going to make my own with raw egg yolks, sugar, a little vanilla mixed with rum and vodka.
Do you just want my dad's recipe for homemade eggnog so you can make it there? Way better made in-house than anything you get in a store here. So... Yeah.
Seeing young Americans get on board with post-war British delicacies (I use that word loosely), that we grew up with is certainly odd, but entertaining...
It's Advo cat not Kate! It's kinda a longer, flatter A sound than cat but definitely not Kate and yes, I am 64 years old, British, and the only thing I know about eggnog is that it's another sickly sweet, consumerist thing like the rest of America's Christmas and Halloween myths.
It's best drank with Dry ginger, either American dry ginger or Canada dry, some people put a dash of lime with it. Some like it with lemonade, bit too sweet for me. Christmas drink. It's Dutch.

Actually, Advocaat is a Dutch thing. It's very popular there.
Never heard of it till I had the question on a quiz show, recommended to try it.
I would say it's pronounced Advocar
Yeah, we did google it but I forgot it once we started filming!
Advocaat is egg yolk, sugar and brandy. If you add condensed milk or thick (heavy) cream then it would be very similar to eggnogg.
Try the "Hot Milk Advocaat" recipe. 30ml Advocaat : 100ml hot milk. Pour hot milk into Warninks Advocaat in your glass, stir and enjoy.

Since you mention Mexico, we have a very similar drink to Advocaat called Rompope
@@el_equidistanteyh because rompope is a derivation of the word rompon, which is used to describe the Spanish version of eggnog

Thanks! And it is so true about trying to find substitutes for the things you miss
Why would you put ice with it?
I’ve never tried eggnog, but a similar drink to Advocate is Baileys. That I think you might enjoy.
Did you use “American Lemonade”? The Brits use Sprite or Squirt as “Lemonade”

I have never heard of eggnog being a British thing ever!
Pronounced ad-va-car
It is basically a brandy custard
Try Steve the barmen u.k one for several cocktail recipes.

So Advocaat is supposed to be thick? Thought mine expired since it's lumpy

I love drinking this straight or with milk. I hate it with lemonade
Snowball is advocat, lemonade, lime cordial and sometimes brandy. You shake it up till it goes all frothy.
Remember lemonade for us is Sprite etc, real lemonade in america is a different thing and it’s not fizzy

a snowball should have lemonade in it? did i misunderstand what you were saying?
Nobody in Britain drinks either, we get a bottle at Christmas for children and granny

Bucksfizz and a snowball not keen on either but gotta keep tradition up lol
pronounced Advacaaaaaaaa

Definitely two completely different drinks. Avvo is Dutch and eggnog is British, as much as Americans would like to think.
Try getting drunk on Advacate

Solid 80's drink. Ad Vo Cat. Advocate.....no.
Pronounced like: ad-vo-ka.
What the hell did you do that Advocaat its suposed to be eaten with a small spoon and whipcream.
Eggnog is not a UK thing. End of story.
Egg Nog, not a real drink... real men drink beer not lager, beer... : o )))
Lager is beer though
Yeah but I would rather drink a cider than a beer

@@ShelbeyHunt West country cider i hope and proper scrumpy
"Advocaat" is a Dutch drink, and therefore a Dutch word. As for pronunciation, its: /ˈædvəkɑː/ (Ad-vo-car)
The word advocaat come from dutch but not the drink it self it originated from medieval Britain
