  • I did Winston Churchill's wild daily routine! I love learning about British culture and this felt like a funny way to try something new!
I had so much fun trying out this experiment - if you have another daily routine of a famous Brit you'd like me to try, let me know!

Hey! I'm Alanna - a thirty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RUclips video every Tuesday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

You did very well considering you don't drink too much normally so well done ✅
Next time you go shopping for the booze look for banana liqueur , so next time you do a test with shorts and they don't taste to well just add a drop ( eye drop size or a couple of ) to the drink and it will taste far better , but be careful it doesn't become a habit 😉 .
Come to think of it I've never done it with beer , cider or champagne etc so you can always do one of your reaction tests but just drink no more than 1/2 pint at a time , or smaller 😂

Churchill had a small dash of whisky with lots of soda in a large glass, it was not a full measure of whisky and as a result would be low in alcohol. It was to provide some flavour and was a habit he picked up in India to make the water palatable.

One of my favourite parts of Churchills routine was the fact that if he couldn't sleep at night or was up late trying to find inspiration for a speech he would pace up and down in one of the big rooms while listening to marching band music, drinking and smoking cigars. How about adding that to the Naps daily regime. 😀😀😎

It’s a very common scene in movies about posh families to show the butler ironing the newspaper before it is taken upstairs. This was actually done, but not to present a nice smooth newspaper. It was to dry the ink, to stop it getting everywhere.

I hope your equilibrium is now restored. He was a racist. He is still strongly opposed by many in South Wales to this day for sending troops to the area in 1910-11 when the Tonypandy riots took place, disturbances between the authorities and striking miners. He had to address it as late as 1950 when campaigning in the election in the area, where he claimed to have been a supporter of the miners. Not what the facts around the General Strike of 1926 show either, where he was put in charge of government propaganda sheet The British Gazette by PM Baldwin to keep him out of the way. In 1945 he claimed Labour would need a UK version of the Gestapo to implement the welfare state, including the NHS. His wife told him not to make such an inflammatory, offensive remark but he went ahead. A disgrace on so many levels, notwithstanding his wartime leadership.

The greatness of the man is only made better by his eccentricities... his wit is legendary, his writing (on subjects he was expert in) fills several shelves, his speeches are still quoted over 80 years later. I love that he would put on a boiler suit and build a brick wall or paint fantastic watercolour paintings and enjoy long friendly meetings with world leaders in the same way we go shopping or catch the bus. I love that he was a war hero, escaped prison, and impressed his bodyguard with his eagerness to engage a would be assassin with his own pistol. It never fails to astonish me how some people can be functioning alcoholics. My grandmother worked until 4pm every day, came home, put her PJs on and started to binge drink and chain smoke to Dr. Phil. By 5:15 she would say "I really looooove that Dr. Phil..." Stammer into the den and pass out cold for two hours, only wake up to resume the drinking. She did that for 40 years and by the time she was 80 she had fairly well pickled herself. They are functional until they aren't 😣

Having read the 1,150+ page biography Churchill: Walking with Destiny. He was an interesting man. Good for you for attempting this! I'm guessing his Whisky & Soda ratio would be more like 2 shots Whisky:1 drop soda water. As a whiskey lover myself that is about all the water I would want. No computers or emails in Churhill's days. Not invented yet! Walking in the park, not in a straight line, hmm was that the wind or the whisky at work? Ha Ha Great vid

Your guess is wrong. He had much more water than whisky, supposedly 7 parts water to 1 of whisky.

Thanks for the video, it was cool. I think Churchill's whiskey and soda was a little weaker than yours, probably more like 1 part whiskey to 5 parts water! :) I did not realise you made and sold fragrances, so I just placed an order!

Supposedly Churchill's whisky and water would be a long drink, 1 shot whisky and a lot of water, something he supposedly sipped a lot through the day. Along with about 5 - 10 large cigars!

Another one of *those* videos, with a dash of historical re-enactment thrown in! RIP Alanna's liver, stomach and intestines: forgotten but not gone.
You'd have to have Churchill's substantial frame to cope with his routine, I suspect... It's certainly prudent to dilute the whisky at breakfast time, lest it be the last, as well as the first, meal of the day.
As you've followed a day in the life of one famous British Prime Minister, why not try Margaret Thatcher next? According to her autobiography, she tended to eat a lot less extravagantly than Churchill - do you fancy poached egg on Marmite toast, Alanna?!
I need to get some more Edenbridge Fragrances before too long. They've proven to be very decent birthday / Christmas presents for my family in the last couple of years.

    Two Churchill quotes:
"a magnum is the perfect size for two gentlemen to have over lunch, especially if one isn’t drinking.”
"Remember gentlemen, it’s not just France we are fighting for. It’s Champagne."
Funny how your hair style changed at lunch time😀.

Churchill was very much of his time. He was born in 1874 and will've been 40/41 when he served in WW1. He was 70 in 1944, so you were kind-of following the routine of a pensioner here, so fair enough he enjoyed his food and had developed a strong alcohol tolerance.
Yeeah, I suspect Churchill will've had a bath run for him and likely got woke up about when it was ready, which would save a lot of time.
Definitely a fun idea for a video. and fun generally. 'Definitely-not'-drunk Alanna is always amusing also. Also, you didn't set an alarm when you had the nap in the evening?

Good video. A couple of notes:
    1. As others have said in the comments, Churchill's Scotch and soda was always weak, with just a little splash of Scotch - I think you overserved yourself by having a double shot. On the other hand, he did apparently often have 3-4 of them a day (and you only had 2). Your servings of cognac also looked somewhat on the large side, though I don't know how much cognac Churchill typically drank at a time.
    2. I'm not sure how much of the champagne you drank with lunch and dinner - apparently he would finish a pint bottle of champagne with lunch, and the same with dinner. You can't get champagne in pint bottles any more, but a pint is about 0.568 l, whereas a modern wine bottle is 0.75 l.
I do love alcohol, and drink more of it than doctors would recommend, but I would definitely be a bit ill if I tried to match Churchill drink for drink. I also wouldn't make the same choice of beverages. I adore champagne, but I prefer it as an aperitif rather than with dinner - I prefer a few glasses of red or white with dinner (depending on the food). And I'm a wine girl - I almost never drink spirits, apart from an occasional G&T.
Finally, my advice to someone trying the Churchill diet would be to have a large glass of water with each drink. In my experience hydration is the key to minimising hangovers. Though I doubt Churchill himself did that!

So glad you didn't try to copy DaVinci's day.
Da Vinci slept for 20 minutes every 4 hours, for 2 hours a day. He had a structured diet rich in water, fiber, and vegetables and low in fat, sugar, and salt. He combined his sleep schedule with habits like journaling, self-affirmation, and athleticism.
